Speaking of inspections, you MUST read the new nonfiction e-book called "I Would Rather Have Root Canal Once a Week for the Rest of My Life Than Ever Buy a House Again." True story. Just $1.85 on Amazon.com. Type in the first 9 words or so and the book will come up. Anyone who has ever bought a house--or is thinking about it--should read this book.
One thing I notice is lots of these houses the inspector is supplied by either the realtor or seller. When I moved to Texas and bought I asked for home inspector list. The realtor gave me a link and I was to find my own. They were not allowed to influence our selection in any way. I think the inspector being supplied by seller or realtor is a conflict of interest. One recent episode the inspector was part of the realtor fee. Bad deal all around.
@Senseial I am a Realtor and a Buyer SHOULD be able to trust their Realtor to recommend trusted service providers. Thats what we are SUPPOSED to be here for. Its a shame that some can make it seem bad for the rest of us. I know some service providers that there is no hell in way I would allow my clients to use...buyers are most times vulnerable...if they are first time homers especially....they depend on us...and so they should.
@Senseial Hense why I AM on here...is that I am trying to find good resouces to give my clients in email and facebook, educate as much as I can. Thats all I do when Im not out face to face. I scope out good education material. Cheers! You DO have a couple good points btw...the inspector part of the realtor?? no no noI LOVE MIKE HOLMES!
Interesting show and he does teach us a lot and does good work, but he goes overboard I think. If you bring him in fro a small problem he seems to turn it into a huge project!
I watched a recent episode and at the end Mike did the final walkthrough with the home owners. He said "we replaced the wiring" and the homeowner asked why? Mike just stumbled and said it was not up to code.
@powershop1903 It is right in the ball park. I work on home renovations in eastern Ontario and some houses that I worked on were roughly 6 to 10 years old and needed a new roof, doors and windows....What does it tell you? Generic material that are more affordable for contractors that are bidding low to get to built a 100 houses project. On average, a new house will need upgrades within 10 to 15 years after purchase.
I love Holmes on Holmes and Holmes Inspection. What I would like is if he would review contractors/specialist in major cities in the U.S. and provide a directory of contractors and specialists who are honest and trust worthy so that people can know who to call. Call it "Holmes List" like Angie's List. There just aren't enough "Mike Holmes" to spread around and he's from Ontario.
If i were rich i would buy a few hundred acres out in the country on a lake, hire Mike and his crew to come and build me a nice log chalet from scratch. It would be sweet having a house that he did from the bottom up, you would have one super sturdy efficient home. I wonder what his own personal home is like and where it's at, somewhere in Ontario maybe? I bet he has one very nice cottage somewhere up in cottage country as well.
A new Mike Show!! Can't wait to see it in the states! Of course we never got the last three (of eight) seasons of Holmes on Homes here, so I'll have to buy it somehow.
See my YouTube channel. I am desperate for your help! We had an above average inspection including thermal and I have had several things repaired in a brand new home! Several things are STILL wrong including TRASH that was buried on our lot. this buried trash and debris contains old tiles containing ASBESTOS!!! I have three small kids that can not access their own backyard. 135 ft x 110 ft of unusable backyard! Floors not level, stairs not to code, PLEASE SEND MIKE HOLMES!!!

@powershop1903
Are you saying he should leave it 'not up to code', even if he can afford to change it?

This show is crap. All houses in Canada could easily be picked apart and branded as "not up to code" !!!

I feel bad for you that you think so low of your own country :(
