Everything seems wonderfull to me here; piano playing, singing... I have no doubt that Britten is a genius but I'm still surprised that so many poeple ignore it. This interpretation's both precise and full of spirit. I've heard this song before but I've discovered it here! Bravo and thanks a lot !
Auden was a close friend of Britten. Obviously if he had thouht that his poem were ruined by this music, he certainly would have told him...but he didn't ! You are free to not like this music, but I wanted to tell you that the man who wrote the poem enjoyed it.
having performed and listened to britten for a number of years, i must admit that this video doesnt fully show the music and the poem off to its full potential.
Honestly, for a bad recording taken outside in the middle of a forest (very interesting choice of venue), I find the text to be surprisingly clear with the exact mood needed for this piece. Wonderful!!

Poor W.H. Auden...

@Esciao Auden wrote libretto and poetry for Britten for many years - they were great friends, and Ausen loved Britten's music. So hardly poor Auden.

This is probably Benjamin Britten's music to Auden's poem ;-) There is a cd with 29 Fanny Hensel songs! Did you know that?
