  • listening to this mix with "today" ears I understand why people are excited about this ... I myself do not find it an improvement over T. Dowds final take and release .... it.s all good .... times have changed .... and so have my ears

  • Duane's slide on the right channel, during the chorus for me, is the entire reason for listening to this version. It is beyond amazing being able to hear this old mix. Whoever kept that track off the final mix did the song a horrible injustice. It's given this song a whole new life to me, after hearing it for 35 years.

  • wonderful

  • Duane on the slide just kick ass

  • This song is not the same whitout duane allman...

  • Of all the hundreds of guitar players Clapton has played with, he has repeatedly said Duane Allman is the best. So why should we argue over a point Clapton himself has answered. Duane's sound was a gift from God.

  • @rivermandan9 Love these alternate takes and different mixes. Clapton is correct here. He was staying within the human realm. If he included those who are more than human, he would have referenced JMH, who traumatized the great EC with his assault on Killing Floor while sitting in upon arriving in London.

  • Just so everyone knows, the reason Eric Clapton doesn't play much slide guitar is because he considered Duane Allman to be "God", and said he couldn't even come close... so why bother?

  • Clapton forever

  • It's amusing to see people argue over Duane VS Eric - something that both of them would have detested. They were friends, not rivals. Both are amazing musicians. It's obvious that Eric respected Duane's prowess by giving Duane the spotlight.

BTW, thanks for posting. In some ways I like this version better. Duane's solo seems like it comes from his heart right into his guitar strings. Genius.

  • On your knees....Yeah, that might work.

  • hey guitarboy, ever listen to layla on the radio when they stop it before the duane solo, or ever listen to layla, with out duane , even with derrick trucks and eric the song is not even close , i like eric too but he didnt hold a candle to duane and dont call me ignorant you cs

  • amen brother as for as im concerned this is duane allman's song,

  • @howarddallman thats ignorant, i know he contributed alot for the slide solo , but clapton and the drummer came up with the layla melody , wich forms the fundament of the song , also clapton personal life made the lyrics so powerful

  • @guitarboy12123 Actually when the song was being created, Eric couldn't figure out the riff . Duane said "I'll be right back" and left the room, 30 mins later he walked back in and gave the song its legendary sound... And who better is ridiculous to even argue......Duane was light years ahead of everyone.

  • @xXxDriftingCowboyxXx hey ,I didn't know that , i don't disagree that duane is awsome but to say that eric didn't contribute to layla is rubbish, the point is that the collaboration between those two ,made them so awsome on a new higher level, at the dominos periode , it seemed that the universe did make sense

  • @guitarboy12123 Yes sir 100% agree... i just have this weird man crush on Duane and his music... I probably need therapy but whatever

  • @xXxDriftingCowboyxXx Nahh It is forgivable that Anthology album and Eat a peach are classics .. Do You know how the term Eat a peach came about ??

  • @hogiesanKenobi mmm I think it has something to do with Duane and something he said about what was going on around this time in history (Vietnam) I believe. "evolution not revolution, I'll eat a peach for peace when I'm back in Georgia." I've also heard that the album was also originally named "That's how they grow them in Dixie" which is a cool title too.

  • @xXxDriftingCowboyxXx Actually i heard the real words spoken were Ï'll eat a peach for peace " when he was asked about peace and Viet Nam .. You guy's remember Viet Nam ??

  • @hogiesanKenobi

Eat a peach is a reference to the scene after Duane's motorcycle accident that he died in. The truck at the intersection was filled with peaches. After the accident they were spilled everywhere.

  • @jwkls17254 I think that is bs ,because he clipped a timber flat-top as you guy's call them .

  • @jwkls17254 Not true ..

  • @jwkls17254,

    Duane hit a logging truck.

Don't you even check wiki before you post something you know nothing about so you don't look stupid?

Pictures of Duane's motorcycle after the accident are on the net... no peaches anywhere.

    That was an ignorant comment.

  • I love God!

  • fantastic!!!!!!

  • Respect to Eric, but whos better than Duane Allman? Absolute crying guitar masterpiece. Forget the fist part of the song ,it means nothing compared to the Allman part.

  • Duane's gutiar solo at the end is above the keyboard and it sounds great Thanks for the great memories

  • SIMPLY BEST!

  • love that little chirp at the end..this version brings back a lot of good memories ..thanks :-)

  • I have never seen the second photo from the Curtis Hixon Hall gig. thanks very much.

If any of you get a chance to listen to the bootleg of this concert, do so. Amazing.

  • one classy tune ..from the hearts of the best musicans, men of our time in this blue ole planet..we should mark this song of all time..greatist ..period!!

  • This is the best version of this song… EVER!

  • Maldito sea el día que partiste de este mundo y nos dejo sin tu magia y talento! Te amamos y te extrañamos Duane Allman!! :’(

  • Layla is a great song.this is so great!!!

  • i Think I like this better than the album version. A little more raw, and different licks from the ones I know by heart.

  • Thank you for posting this raw recording of Layla. Whitlock accompanying Eric on vocals and Allman accompanying Eric on guitar = timeless masterpiece.

  • Wow youtube is deciding to not make that a greater than sign.

  • Duane allman - Eric clapton

  • Tom Dowd was a great producer but without a doubt without Duane Allman the album was dead on arrival if it ever would have gone anywhere but the dust bin. And he played not only slide but big parts regular too.

  • Happy Birthday Duane, what music you could of made, They have a Hell of a Band in Heaven.

  • Joder...vellos de punta.

  • Don't Forget Tom Dowd, the genius in the studio, who produced this album! RIP

    TD and DA

  • Thanks for the upload friend :)

  • The coda (second part) is heavenly music -- a gift for all time. Gives me goose bumps listening to Duane playing the slide. Incredible.

  • i could, and will, listen to this several hundred more times before i die, and i'm 61

years young! only wish Duane hadn't died so early on. But, let's give thanks for all the great music he shared with everyone. r.i.p. Duane, yours, BigEye

  • didnt clapton make the deal too? Isnt that why his music is now pretty pop standard in his old age

  • I consider myself eric and dwaynes biggest fan, but have never heard this, fantastic, thanks.

  • @rick00770 you should maybe learn how to spell duane allman, dude. that´s the first thing to be the biggest fan

  • No words for this kind of art...

Thank you! Beautiful job with the pics.

  • Beyond Godlike

  • Great set of pics which helps outline this time and immensely beautiful song

  • Bom. kawałek

  • Fabulous version! Eric Clpton & Dwayne Allman. 2 of the best guitar players. :)

  • *bows* <3 this

  • bel video

    bravo!

  • I like how you finished-off the vid montage with a photo of Duane playin those "bird notes" Maybe, it will give people perspective, who ever understood how those notes were played or WHO played em! Poor guy, died before Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was released. True hippie, Blues machnie! Never cared about the big dollars, just playin...and getting stoned:)

  • I like Beethoven’s piano sonatas and Wim Mertens; should I try to rank them alongside Duane Allman? I never heard a guitar like Duane’s. Give me a dusty old recording of Duane anyday. But how on earth can I say he is better than Mr X. Can only say I am grateful to youtube for allowing me to get the first different music I heard from Duane in 30 odd years.

Sincere thanks to all the people who made the postings.

  • phenomenal song, great version.

  • duane and bonamassa and beck and alvin lee-kick all the supposed axe gods arses! hendrix and clapton excepted

  • So who was the third in the Layla triangle? I never knew...

  • @wfages Clapton, Layla, and Layla's husband George Harrison

  • @wfages Pattie Boyd , Harrison wife at the time is who Clapton wrote Layla for.

  • i like this version

  • Whats Dwayne playing, lead? I can't tell!! :\

  • @AtariGuy666 They are actually co-leading on this song. The "cleaner sounding" play is Duane. Duane is the only lead guitar in the piano part and also makes the bird chirp sound. Watch the Tom Towd video on this song. What people don't realize is that back in the day, when an album had a band name and said "Featuring" another musician, that mucisian was being given top billing.

  • @AtariGuy666 he's playing slide actually

  • if worse came to worse, you could always hook up a standalone cd recorder to your computer......there have been some things where I found this to be the only practical answer........of course your going to end up with the compressed version that you are listening to now. Sometimes the music is more important than the quality of the recording....................

  • I must have listened to this version over a hundred times.Clayopalstar, what a wonderful tribute to Duane at the end. EXCELLENT pics. Anybody out there know how to take this and burn it on a cd?

  • csteed909 hey dude,when did whitlock die?

  • @mikkm Bobby is still with us.Check some of his music out, especially his version of ''love so sad'',it on youtube.

  • The world got ripped off when Duane Allman died.

  • OMG THE PICS!!!! Delish!!!!!

  • This is by far the best version of the song. Duane Allman might have been the greatest player ever, had he lived. The slide work by Duane, punctuated by Slowhands jabs and counter leads makes this song a crying guitar masterpiece. The piano coda outtro with the guitars is my favorite part. Thank you,Tom Dowd and the person who posted this gem.

  • @skydogging I can't find the Duane Allman/Otis Redding version of "I've Been Loving You Too Long" on youtube. Any ideas?

  • @longlivetheking58 never heard of it and i googled

  • Thank you the stereo mix is superior to the conventional release

  • It's times like these that I'm glad I invested in good speakers!

  • EC is God to some people but heaven required Duane ALLMAN and Bobby Whitlock first.

  • THIS IS THE BEST VERSION OF LAYLA- magnificent

  • Eric Clapton looked so young, I almost did not recognize him!

  • Great version, nice images as always :)

  • @DejaVuSu this is so moving ...duane at his best ...clapton singing his ass off...radle cooking...thx4pstng

  • I like Beethoven’s piano sonatas and Wim Mertens; should I try to rank them alongside Duane Allman? I am still moved by Duane’s playing I never heard a guitar like Duane’s. Give me a dusty old recording of Duane anyday. But how on earth can I say he is better than Mr X.
