  • I'm 22 and who gives a shit

  • Omg alcatraz brought me here too

  • Alkatraz brought me here

  • @berragazzo same here

  • @Ajchimara but I think that was Ella Fitzgerald

  • @Ajchimara If you are talking about the Alcatraz song, no it was just Holiday's 1952 version =) Fritzgerald's version is a little faster I think

  • @berragazzo I <3 Billie Holiday, but after watching episode 6 I came here to listen to the whole song too =)

  • wow 1938?!!

  • she is at her peak in these Teddy Wilson sessions. Her youthful exhuberance just shines through, it is though she can't believe that she is part, and she is just a part, not the main feature, of such a phenomenal band, She never ruite reached these dizzy heights again.

  • "Aw wah wah wah music was so much better back then, music now is crap, I wish I lived then" You idiots need to realise that in every genre of music and every age of music, there are great songs. Just because you like this the most, it does not make it the best musical style of all time.

  • @TheMangoDeluxe I agree with you, every time must produce greatness but it is harder to find it at the moment - the promoters seem crazed with the awful.- mind you there has always been rubbish around too like "I'm a Blue Toothbrush You're a Pink Toothbrush. Grotty stuff is not just a modern thing.

  • dear anna may wong <3

  • Rest in peace, Eleanora.

  • Thanks to Billie Holiday and the many others who came before and after her for the gift of this music. I was born in 1948. Through the years, I have learned to appreciate all kinds of music. At my age tho. Can you forgive me for not liking Rap? I just don't get it. I understand it also has a message. But sometimes those messages are for violence. But you do your thing and I do mine. But please young people. Do listen to your parents and know that what we heard in the 30's 40's 50's & 60's wr gd

  • @fallswhiteshadow assuming rap is what's modern is a failure on your part. I can list a half dozen bands that should be listened to, somewhat more importantly than the "standards"

  • @fallswhiteshadow

as far as rap promoting negative messagez, rap music is art and art reflects decay in a decaying society.

  • @4l4ddin77 the controllers of the industry promote the negative and suppress the postive so that's why we so much crap in all genre's, there are some great artist but they are underground.......mainstream is pure garbage

  • @velveteyes79 For sure. i can't stand to see what hip hop is turning into. it's lost its maturity. mainstream music in general really.

  • Anna May Wong and Eric Maschwitz, were lovers. Maschwitz calls this a 'catalogue song' in his biography- in this case working through the various things that remind the singer of a lost love. This song is about Anna May Wong.

  • This was a favorite song of Paul and Julia Child.

  • So beautiful !

  • im watching and listening to this beautiful music on this video right. i look at the views and it says 109,583 right.. i look at the video suggestions on the right side of the page and on the bottom is some stupid three 6 mafia video right... guess how many views they got.... Fucking 28,550,364!! does anyone know what is wrong with this fucking picture!?

  • Who cares how old you are? You don't have to be born in that time era to be able to appreciate the quality of this music.

  • i just love how much class singers of this time are and it shows in there music

  • God Bless Teresa Teng (1953-95).

  • I think Fantasia could cover this pretty well.

  • WONDERFUL ! She is as good Today as She was the first time I heared her

about 65 yrs ago! Teddy Wilson,s backing Groups(s),were,as if, "made" for Billie.

Some of the Best "small band" jazz recorded THANKS Pete uk

  • i just had an eargasm.

  • I'm 25 years old and this song is honest to goodness one of my favorite songs of all time. I can sit and listen to it over and over again. The piano with Billie's voice is like a little slice of Heaven here on Earth. How I wish I could have lived in this era to hear all these great performers play their music, sing their songs, and dance the night away in a ballroom into a dream far, far away! Great music!!!

  • There's a lot of good music being created now, today. The problem is finding it as most Media outlets don't carry it. They're not all independent labels either, they just don't have the broad distribution that the over-played gagas get. My wife and I have become big fans of Pandora Radio because we've discovered a lot of good stuff you'd probably not hear anywhere else. Somewhat obscure or under-publicized stuff that deserves a larger audience.

  • @retroflow44 Insofar as vintage music, there's literally hundreds of recordings for any given decade. If you're starting to explore this type of stuff, don't settle on just a handful of enduring hits or you'll miss out on a lot. Try everything you can get a hold of. If you don't know the song, listen to it so that you do. There's a lot of good, often rare stuff on YT if you look for it. Oh, and don't let others tell you what is good/bad/better - they're often no different than the gaga fans.

  • This is a great version of this song--but Clyde McPhatter's version is the greatest!

  • A song for Anna May Wong performed by Billie Holiday. One would almost think that God does exist.

  • The songs today is more about sex and self absorbed artist even if the artists is not shallow the songs they put out are.Its all about the times and what people go through these songs back then was to bring smiles through peoples faces and hearts by putting truthful and understanding lyrics with authentic people.Im only 24 and I know these old singers couldnt work of a push up bra or minnie skirt. And lets be real music was real good up until 2002.But thank god we had ella billie and sarah

  • warm music for a cold soul/:<3

  • terry 81yrs old just found youtube. Ella next then Mahilia. What's the word FAB!!!!

  • Why to hurry? Why to scream? Divine, divine Lady Day, slow and smoothy, matches perfectly...

  • For you "young'uns" who maybe only know her name but not her music, it doesn't get any better than this! Listen to those musicians backing her, especially that sax! I love anything she recorded from the mid1930s into the '40s. After that, it's painful to hear her voice, as she fought drug and alcohol addictions until her passing in 1959, age 44.

  • Lady Day lived 44 years,,,, She suffered 44 years,, She makes us feel every day of that 44 years, that's why I love her soul. Rest in Peace Lady,

  • i'm teary-eyed right now. gonna make me some jasmine tea.

  • THE BEST...............

  • Great Jazzy voice!

    Lady Day rocks...:P

  • This music sends me straight to heaven

  • Wow. You can't get better than this.

  • I dont get it - why did irmac get like 50 thumbs up for her horrible parody???

.....I think I'll pass on lunch today! *retch*

  • irmac i think you're sick....

  • I'll second that...

  • Overrated? I would say underrated, she defined what jazz vocals are about.Ella is overrated compared to her,she is the true pioneer natural born talent and few people aside form jazz lovers know her

  • I tear up every time I hear this song.

  • is that diana ross at 13 seconds????

  • Bryan Ferry's version is very good as well.

  • I'm 28 and if anyone were to tell me that music today, with all it's technilogical "evolution," is better than anything from this time I would have to call the police.

  • i agree man music today just fucking brainwashes, real music some thing is felt when u listening to it..some thing much more then just sound...it comes alive..these days i have to deal with a fuckin lady gaga talking her wanting to ride a disco stick.....

  • Right on, glad there are many like us still walking around with a lil' soul goin' on. Stay up m8.

  • I know. I used to be a contemporary R&B and rap fan and just a casual jazz fan. Then I heard Billie Holiday. Hearing her sing "Fine and Mellow" really made me feel something, and I've never had those experiences she was singing about. Now I only listen to jazz and blues and soul and classic rock and only occasionally listen to todays R&B and rap. No offence to Beyonce or Mary J., but they can't move me in the way that Billie or Etta can.

  • Hey thanks for the reply, ain't that something though? Well like my father says: "Who feels it knows it." Stay up.

  • me too...

    exactly this.

    w1n.

  • @Portis1Luv Agreed. :)

  • @Portis1Luv

I Agree. and dissagree. im 17. i like this old stuff but you cant compare this to the new things really. fallout 3 is what got me into older older music. before fallout i liked stuff as old as the eagles =p but not really this music

  • tinkling piano in the next apartment.... this is how i got into jazz. Billie is the ultimate seduction... its lecherously delicious buffet of awe and class! I love your spirit holiday, the madam!

  • consider different recording equipment , and what they can do in the studio now, compared to then.....and the Billie Holiday story

  • BILLIE YOU DID THE BEST FOR THE MUSIC !

  • R.I.P. LITTLE CHILD !!!!

  • My heart skips a beat <3

  • Billie's version really resonates well in my ears and soul. The term 'better' is very subjective and so I'll say that there are many fine interpretations of this standard.

Billie Holiday had a 'horn like' quality to her voice that remains unmatched.

    What a beautiful soul too!

  • One of my favorite songs of 1936.

  • It sure is a pity that we get into petty quarrels of who sang these great American standards best: was it Billie, Ella, Sarah, Judy, Mildred, etc.? In those days, everyone was singing the same songs and consequently an artist had to truly bring something UNIQUE to the table to be successful, which led to MANY great renditions of the same songs. Today, we have plenty of original tunes being cranked out, and even some scant notable talent, but we are certainly in a deficit of GREATNESS!

  • @direfranchement AMEN!

  • While I love the Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald versions, there is no doubt that the Etta James' version is the best ever. Etta's version is more passionate, more moving, more soulful.

Thanks for sharing Billie's great version.

  • Why compare? It's all subjective anyway. I'm sure there are millions of people who'll disagree with you. Each singer you've named has brought distinct sets of emotions to this song, and viva la difference!!

  • This song is amazing. Best version in my opinion is the one sang by Ella Fitzgerald.

  • You mean the version with Buddy Rich and Oscar Peterson? I agree.

  • Exactly! It's amazing.

  • This is one of my favourite songs. This is the American Verson of this beatiful song from the UK. The verse is not present here, but is present the the oorginal UK version. It gives the message in this song more meaning and emotion.

  • Very nice music, I am looking for a good one of the song summertime and the living is easy. does anyone have a good video for me?

  • grandiosa!

  • This is such a lovely song.

  • The best female vocalist ever! I love all her renditions of popular songs from 30s and 40s. There is no one to compare with Billie Holiday, period!

    Margie

  • One of the truly great voices! excellent post.

0:15 is not Billie though. it's Diana Ross of the Supremes playing Billie in "Lady Sings The Blues".

  • lol thats that other bitch i hate that play the lovely lady day in her movie :)

  • Love anything that Billie sings. What a fabulous talent, and lovely lady. And so missed even after 50 years.

  • Thank you for sharing.

  • Stupendous!!!

This gift from God was with us for too short a time. I sigh when I listen to her magical voice. It mesmerises me.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • PLEASE DON'T GET UPSET BUT I NEED TO VENT

i'm sorry but i don't think diana ross should have played her, i'm upset that beyonce is playing etta james, gwen stefani didn't look like jean harlow, no one can come close to being marilyn monroe, and although halle berry did a damn good job i think tia mowry looks more like dorothy dandridge.

  • I am not upset with you.

For me, it's not important that an actor look like the person they are portraying. If an acto can remind us of someone, that is significant. How sad would it be if someones twin could not act?

  • Looking like someone doesn't qualify you to play them. . . as much as skill is and beyonce did a darn good job playing etta

  • no but your memory of the person can get completly bounced of the wall when it seems they put no thought into it. hollywood has a habit of playing the name game with biopics about other entertainers.

  • What's up!! To be honest, you're never gonna find someone that look like or even act like these women. But I do think they ALL did a good job in protraying these. Nobody can live your life but you. They don't have to act Identical but present a good portion of what they did in they're life. Were you there during the time these women were living? U don't know how these women lived so how can you say they did bad in portraying them? And you left out Lynn Whitfield in the Josphine Baker story.

  • You have your opinion I have mine don't get upset.

  • Thank you. Best rendition of this song by Miss Holiday, or by anyone, I think. Such a voice for someone so young at the time. Mesmerizing.

  • OH BABY

  • Thanks

  • SO BEAUTIFUL!
