Ah, Immortal, the Manowar of Black Metal. This is a pretty damn cool video. Too bad about the damn beam in between the band and the cameraman, but it kind of adds to the mystery? maybe? Great performance, lot of feeling in it.
The problem is that no matter how much the modern bands try to re-light the old black metal flame, it's pretty much a futile effort thanks to how black metal has pretty much become common knowledge throughout the extreme metal community, too many people know about it. That leads to a massive wave of bands without originality, and lack of creativity. Basically, we do have good modern bands like Taake, Koldbrann, etc., but it's pointless to try to go back in time because it will never be the same.
Where did you get the "Bergen" location from? I noticed all of Abbath's stage introductions exactly match the "Live Zaandam" bootleg, and on that you can clearly hear audience members talking in Dutch. Tracklisting also makes sense for the "Fuck Christ" tour too, so I think this is actually from BergUM (Holland), Dec. 17.
@jacobmal Agree that Euronymus' (donno how to spell it) death was a good thing. he made awesome riffs, but he was a poser. BUT that doesnt change the fact that he and Mayhem set the standars
@Drummerdrok666 Sorry to tell you this, but pretty much ALL of the Norwegian bands during the early 90's were just a bunch of kids trying to rebel against the norm and act hardcore. While some of them commited crimes, they later realised that what they believed in was nothing more than a trend set by a complete hypocrite.
You can clearly see that most of the crimes and animosity stopped after Euronymous' murder and Vikernes imprisonment.
Abbath really hasn't aged much. The thing I love about him, is he's still WAY into the music. I think most of the other bands sorta got whatever aggression out and are trying too hard.
of course you don't need low musical production for great atmosphere. however, as i said atmosphere is everything in black metal. atmosphere achieved through low or high quality production is irrelevant.
bad recording quality has nothing to do with black metal sound it has everything to do with recording budget they only do it that way because they have to any real black metal band would put out a good sounding recording if they could and most of them do as soon as they can [ie;Immortal] you people put too much stock in demo recordings
Listen to Thou Shalt Suffer's demos, then listen to Emperor's demos. Significant DROP in sound quality, after the SAME MUSICIANS embrace the Black Metal Aesthetic.
And just to prove how fucking stupid you are, some of my favorite 'obscurely named' black metal bands, in no specific order, though Immortal does happen to be my favorite. Let's see. Mayhem, Darkthrone, Satyricon (Early, Nemesis Divina was there last decent album), Emperor, Beherit, Bathory of course. (They fucking started black metal, by the way) 1349, Burzum, Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Kathaarian, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, Leviathan, Lord Belial, Marduk, Samael, Thorns, etc. Too many. Fuck off.
its just personal opinion...i like the change in sound...completely uninfluenced by the level of their popularity...you can very well avoid the band if you dont like...there may be lots of bands that you must be liking.
What's sad is your ignorance! This was filmed in 1993, and was off of thier second record, Pure Holocaust, so by your own admission, you should like this!!
LOL? Immortal have always played black metal, they've never delved into much else. They're by far the best black metal band I've heard, and I've heard all of them.
All of them? seriously? You've heard every black metal band ever? HAHAHAHA. Your poser words make GraveGratification laugh. Shove your "True Norwegian Black Metal" up your ass. Anyone can write a song in a minor key, throw in a blast beat and sing about a forest (which is what modern Immortal is. This video, the early days, is the good stuff).
Lets hear it. Lets see what some 15 year old kid in his moms basement can do. Are you going to tell me all the obscure band names you know but don't actually listen to because it's "too raw"?
seriously kid. Listen to metal-core. Those kids love your kind.
Were you even born when Immortal was around? How about back in 1983 when Bathory came about? Do you even know who the fuck Bathory is, you stupid cunt? Honestly. Everything you've been saying is a complete misconception of what I actually am. I'm completely against metalcore. I'm almost entirely a black metal purist. I'm not going any further with this pointless argument, just realize how stupid you are to assume shit you don't even know. By the way, I prefer low-fi production. Fucking idiot.
I agree with most of what you said, but saying you prefer flawed, limited frequency recording is just ridiculous. Bands shouldn't have to rely on low quality recordings to make a song sound ambient, black metal style.
gay immortal??..just dat they added thrash elements and hav better production makes them gay or sellouts??..wat the hell do u want??..them 2 play in front of 20 kids in a show??..they are much better than a million other black metal and even other metal bands out there...IMMORTAL forever!!
true as with most bands their earlier work is ALLWAYS BETTER but...its not to say that all bands get shitty... i happen to like all of their work but favorite albums have to be all the albums from Full moon mystisism, pure holocost, battles in north, blizzard beasts and at the heart of winter. they were all good.. although different from each other. btw anyone notice d 'star wars' soundin theme riff at 4.25?
Agree! Most metal that comes out now is utter shit! That's not me being "true". It's a fact. And the metal crowd has become a gathering of losers who desperately want to fit in somewhere.
A welcome vid mate! The glory days of 2nd wave Black Metal, '93-'99. So many classics came out between those years. This was true Norwegian Black Metal.
Dat crab walk. I thought immortal took black metal somewhat seriously in their early days. That's not true, apparently.

In the past, so very long ago, Immortal set the standards for Black Metal.
Nowadays they play a thing called ' ' music ' ' ; and have evolved into ' ' real musicians ' '.

this concert sound So Well! I love this Atmosphere!
This is my best song!

Actually, a lot of black metal bands purposefully use low quality recording. It has to do with the aesthetic of it.
Behemoth782 2 years ago 8
in black metal, atmosphere is everything.
dubasher 2 years ago 42
well, no it's not, I value music over aesthetics.
All my favourite old black metal bands started out with low quality recordings, but they went to higher quality when they could.
You don't need low musical production for a great atmosphere anyway.

Bathory>Venom all Day
Venom was a bad Motorhead Ripoff with satanic imagery
all you have to do is listen, they just invented a term, doesn't mean the music was black metal
