Simply stunning!! It blows other recordings of this out of the water. They play as if there is nothing between them. I would have loved to have been at that concert. I bet this video doesn't do the performance justice. These two are phenomenal. Such an intimate performance.
I love it when musicians put their body into the music! My favorite is when a violinist with long hair does a head bang in the middle of their performance and their hair goes flying in every direction!
They studied from a transcription which has a typo in bars 81, 83, and 85. The eighth note should be staccato, but there is clearly a tenuto. I made and am studying a transcription to guitar&e.b. so I can tell the typos.
There probably exist other typos, but I'm too lazy to compare the piece against Halvorsen's original engraving.
@chompet123 The @artofcello version is indeed impressive considering he plays both parts and then puts them together. He should be proud of his version and I truly enjoyed it but...
I prefer this version. Julia and Daniel played off each other and made a performance out of it rather than a recording. Although artofcello attempted at some points to do this, it still comes off too mechanical for my tastes. Hats off to all (Julia, Daniel, and artofcello) because it truly is great music all around.
I love Julia!! She's my idol! ...@binkymagnus you are right! when I go see performances like this I cant stop smiling! There is something wrong with those people!
Why does the audience look so miserable?! That's what's killing classical music. Audiences treat it like it's something to look at quietly in a museum.
@binkymagnus They're not miserable, they're focusing intently on the music and the performers, I know that when I hear or see a work of art even if it does make me happy I'm going to be very intent on it, especially if it's the first time I'm hearing it. I would be focused on absorbing the music as much as possible. I personally don't think they're miserable and that plenty of other things are killing classical music. But that's another story...lol
Janine Jansen play a better version. More trash in my sense than Julia. She play a polish music, in her chaconne it's the same. But it'could be contemplatif too...
i'm sharing the opinion of pretty much every expression of the musicians in the orchestra... clear sound, good instrumentalists, but just boring!!
i practised it (passacaglia :P) a lot and i'm hearing a lot of stuff, i don't see written in the sheet music! Sorry, to say that, but i'm just telling you what every other proffessional would tell you aswell...
to be honest... I felt some of it... but overall.. it didn't seem right. It was a bit too fast and it felt like they're competing against each other instead of playing as one.
There was not much feel.. most were just skills and it's like they expressed their music from their own rather than from and to each other as one, if you know what I mean... it's a bit hard to explain. >_<
go easy on me if you disagree with me.. it was just an honest opinion coming from a listener.
Reading all these comments about whose version is better is actually pretty distracting...people should be able to have opinions without bashing everyone else.
PS I have read some comments like 'this is not baroque style, this is not Handel'... Well, this is not Handel indeed, this is Handel-Halvorsen and this is the reason why I appreciate this performance much more... If you need baroque then start to listen original one...
@ThePoscriptum I thought P/Z were together more (at 6:13 these two were WAY off) and had more fun with it; they bounced off each other (they made the audience laugh too). that being said the ending of the piece in this video is amazing !!!
@noddles3000 Music ist not only technique, what I see by P/Z. They play ok, but without to understand, what they play. I do not see any difference between Hendel and Klezmer there. They just should refuse to play these things and consentrate on Kletmer! I guess!
Not as dramatic or pronounced as several other more impressive performances have shown (most famous of which being Perlman Zukerman that these two must already be familiar with). They are not playing Paganini here, does anyone think the noble Handel's music should be a romantic period virtuoso showpiece? Then again, it looks like this was an encore and the adrenaline compromised their ability to play the work in an appropriate tempo.
I prefer the version by Perlman/Zukerman, only because the tempo here is a bit faster than I prefer, and the dynamics are although drastic, but very un-defined. If that makes sence :p None the less, great performance.
The chemistry between them is clear for all to see and their mastery of this style of music almost unrivalled. I have seen Julia perform Bach at London's Wigmore Hall and no-one performs it better.
Very great!!!!!!! The violoncellist is very very beatiful!!!!!! The violinist is very expressive!!! I'm a young violoncellist and I love Danile Muller Schott!!! He's funny!!!!!!
The beginning was superb! But I wished that they gave me some time to catch my breath. :) But iBag3l, you are right, only a handful of people is able to perform at such a level.
