He said something he really didn't mean and it resulted in the loss of the friendship he valued most. Before I read Deathly Hallows I was okay with Severus, but after Deathly Hallows I found extreme respect for him.

Everything he'd ever done was for Lily, and I think that's just beautiful.

One thing people keep skipping in the debate of just how noble or good Snape was is that he really wasent. He didnt join the Order of Phoenix to overthrow the Dark Lord. He did it to save Lily, and he didnt do anything to help Harry for Harrys sake, he did it for Lily again. At no point do i think Snape actually changed his mind, but because he loved he as willing to act against his own desires. Love conquers all...even to those we dont especially like.

Smeagol, while his story was tragic, in the end didn't actually willingly contribute to the downfall of Sauron/Mordor. Snape had made it so he looked like to be not only of Voldemort's favorite but that he was the master of the Elderwand, he also made sure Harry recieved the sword of Gryffindor. Snape also devoted himself to Harry's safety and Dumbledore's will, he is much more noble then Smeagol ever was.
