i don't see how there can be a qb competition. Forcier was the most poised freshman I've ever seen the first half of last year. that kid destroyed defenses. he's an every down kind of qb in my mind
Rich Rodriguez is a great coach. That is why the University of Michigan got him. He's rebuilding Michigan from the ground up to give you fans of Michigan something special. I'm from Iowa... and Hayden Fry left nothing when he retired. Kirk Ferentz had to build Iowa from the ground up again. I follow the Big Ten pretty close and I was looking at film of this Gardner guy on youtube and he's like another Rasheed Marshall or Pat White. He's gonna do special things for Big Blue! Be patient.
Michigan's offensive stats will not be as good as 2009. There is literally no depth on offense, and very few playmakers. Too many young players in a conference full of experienced defenses. UConn and ND won't be easy wins either. I will be astonished if UM equals their 2009 offensive production.
@MrThatswhatshesaid12 "there is literally no depth on offense" How can you say that?? We lose two backs who haven't been healthy the last two years, and hardly played the second half of last year, and we have 5 healthy backs to take their place. We lost one starting reciever and a life time back up. Michigan is more experienced and talented and every offensive position on the field and this is the best offense RR has had since he's been here!!
I'm not worried about Uconn all that much. They really didn't have an impressive stat in the 2009 season and Fraizer isn't all that great of a qb. Their only big threat was their RB but he's gone. BG will get destroyed and we'll beat ND again. Umass will be a slaughter like Deleware State. I think though that Michigan fianlly has done as good job of working the kinks out of the offense and I know they'll be improved going into this season. 8-4 season.
UConn will have one of the best O-line's we'll face all year and one of their two equal RBs is back. That said, their QBs are average at best and they lost their best receiver to the NFL and their defense is just bad.
However, I'd much rather worry a lot about this game and see the players come out with chips on their shoulders.
@theproducerspart2 I worry a lot about the UConn game, like the ZooCrew said, they have have one of the better olines and a really good running back, with a mediocre qb. The also have a pretty good front seven, but their secondary is awful, they also had problems against running qb's last year (Daniels and Collaris had 80+ yards rushing against them). UConn is pretty much Wisconsin/Iowa/Penn State/UOS lite. If we have a lot of success against them, this could be a really good year for us.
@Kane9891 I agree and it's so hard to say games like Uconn BG even Umass are must wins now for us. God I remember starting off home openers and killing the shit out of the team we played back during Carr's days. If RR doesn't turn things around this season he's gone.
@theproducerspart2 I don't remeber killing the shit out of a team since we played Houston in '03(?) but I see where you're coming from. I personally have said this since Rich got here is that you have to give him at least four years before we reach a decision on him. He has to have time to get rid of the players who don't fit or were just god awful from the last coach (Threet, Sheridan, everybody on the '08 defense except for Graham, Warren and Martin) and get his players in.
@Kane9891 No way in hell UM beats Iowa, Wiscy or PSU. Wiscy and Iowa are all gonna be top 10 or so teams, and both will beat michigan, wiscy will blow them out. They won't beat psu either. I see OSU as another loss, ND and UCONN and MSU are all toss ups. Looking at their schedule, I see 5 wins, 4 losses and 3 toss ups. I'll say 6, maybe 7 wins for UM. A mediocre season, but it prob wont get RR fired.
@cameroncrazie818 "No way in hell UM beats Iowa, Wiscy or PSU" I'll give you we won't beat wisonsin, but that's the big ten champ and a national title contender. HOWEVA iowa and penn st are very beatable, especially penn st. We went into iowa and were two points away from beating them even with Tate playing like crap and losing 6 fumbles, If qb play improves and we can hang onto the damn ball we'll win. PSU is laughable, if they score more than 17 on anybody I'll be surprised.
@Kane9891 As big of a Michigan fan as I am I dont think we can beat Iowa. Nobody see's the talent on that team and they are very very underrated. You cant base a game off last years, if that were the case then Wisconsin will get killed again by OSU. Trust me when I say Iowa is the best team in the Big Ten. The offense has so many weapons and the defense should be even better than last years. They have two players in the top 5 BIg Ten players with Adrian Clayborne and Tyler sash.
Tate losing us the game last year doesn't mean he'll repeat again this year if he plays. In case you didn't know, it is possible to get better at football. Look at John Navarre.
@Henderson711 that offense that has so many "weapons" runs through ricky stanzi, i expect him to stanziball away a couple of games this year. Yes, the defense that doesn't substitute against the spread and plays both safties back, Michigan's speed is going to kill them this year. And, wisconsin is far and away the best team in the big ten this year.
@Kane9891 Thats where McNutt and Kulianos come in for Stanzi not to mention the pressure that will be off his shoulders with Wegher and Robinson being able to control the ball and I dont have to say anything for that defense thats going to wreck teams. I hope that Michigan can beat them too man dont get me wrong, I just dont see it happening but I also see Wisconsin being one of the favorites. Its going to take alot out Of Fuckeyes to beat them at Camp Randall. Go Blue
Not only am I a student, but Michigan still has more wins than any other program and is considered a top tier public school. Sorry you're bitter towards an entity that will always be better than you.
@TheZooCrew Any retard can get into UM if you did. Bitter? Ha. I just love making pussies like you cry over your pathetic football and basketball teams.
@Chrisrokk239 You're an idiot. It's not easy to get into Michigan. I had a 29 ACT and an 1880 SAT with a 3.96 cumulative GPA and didn't get in....but nice try.
we will be top 5 in big ten this year, 2011 I think we will be competing for the big ten title. Im no delusional, just my honest opinion, and unless are defense improves immensely from last year, we are also another year away from beating OSu.
I don't think so. Once again, remember how the team was all fired up for Western? Remember the hype? Remember how people thought we would lose? That's what I thought. Plus, UConn doesn't have an Armanti Edwards to run annoying QB draws.
Biggest issues with Michigan this year will be 1. Ball control. We have to learn on how to hold on to the ball better than we did last year. Way too many fumbles and interceptions. 2. DEFENSE! Our defensive line fell apart after the Notre Dame game was over going into Indiana and we just royally got hammered by the run and pass. 3. Consistency. If Michigan can win on the road and at home they'll be be able to put together a successful season but it all starts with beating UConn in the opener.
I think our offence will score alot, but i dont think our defence can stop much. I say we lose 4 games. Uconn, Iowa, Penn State and Michigan State. But its about time for our streak with the Suckeyes to end.
@XxShwangBangxX if we lose to Uconn, we will lose to osu nd wisconsin. psu doesn't look good this year, maybe we can win that too. i predict 8-4, with losses to iowa, wisconsin, osu, nd maybe penn state (if not psu, an unexpected loss somewhere, since we're very inconsistent, hopefully not though)
If we lose to UConn, I'll be very worried. While not a bad team, UConn is being overrated by everyone here. That's not a bad thing because the players will be fired up as well, just like they were for Western. If you look at UConn's schedule last year, they lost to some godawful teams and yet managed to outshoot Notre Dame. They're extremely inconsistent, lost their one NFL-caliber receiver, and their secondary flat-out blows. We'll be okay.
Maybe our secondary isn't great against Big Ten teams. But UConn is a middling Big East team. Remember the anxiety about Western last year? They put up scary offensive numbers, Hiller will be a decent NFL QB in a few years, and they were at the top of their conference. But when all was said and done, they're still a MAC team and we still have Big Ten level athletes. I'm a little apprehensive about UConn, but I think it's overplayed.
@TheZooCrew I wouldn't call UConn a middling Big East team, put them in a real conference, yeah they're a middling team there, but in the big east they could easily big champions or be on of the top 3 teams.
im the biggest michigan fan but they dont have a good defence it looks like they lost alot of there good players(brandon grahm, carlos brown, brandon minor and more my prediction is 6-6
i love our offense, i hate where tryin to run a 3-3-5 defense i mean i hope to see more of a multiple look defense like run a 46 cover , the 4-2-5, the 4-3, and a lil 3-3-5
...but i dont want to see us trapped into tryin to just runnin all our d plays in a 3-3-5 formation to try to get these kids to learn this!!! I know greg rob is a 4-3 guy so my guess is if the 3-3-5 flops we will prolley be goin out the 4-3 and 3-4....i dunno!! god bless all us michigan fans!!Hail
Oh how I wish to have been there to see it all. For two seasons I have been trying to convince myself that something good will happen for us. But the disappointments only strengthened my belief and my confidence. I know that somethig good WILL happen and this will be the year, a trip to a Bowl game. I will, once again, be convinced. GO BLUE!
I think our pass defense might be suspect this year, but all the blue chippers we are getting in the secondary aren't showing up until August. I was pretty impressed with the run defense though, Kenny Demens was really impressive making plays against the run. I also think if Denard continues to improve in August don't be surprised if he starts.
i attended my firste ver Michigan spring game, and here's what I saw:
-I still want Forcier to start at QB, but Denard Robinson definitely played better yesterday. He showed excellent field awareness and delivered crisp passes. He looked like Dennis Dixon out there.
-Our receivers dropped like 7 passes. Tony Dews ain't teaching them how to catch
-Fitzgerald Toussaint needs to ...start at tailback. Shaw, Cox, and Hopkins looked really slow and hesitant, whereas Toussaint showed toughness between the tackles in addition to his already terrific agility. He could be a beast this season
-Jeremy Gallon caught several passes in traffic. He could be a contributor this season
-Kevin Koger has really regressed, whereas Brandon Moore has made progress and caught 4 wide open seem passes. I want Moore to see more playing time (haha)
-Devin Garder started very poorly but then came along pretty well. He'll be amazing one day
-The defense is......horrendous. The d-line didn't get pressure, the linebackers roamed the field like headless chickens, and the secondary got burned time and time again. Roy Roundtree caught a bomb on a post route that went 95 yards for a TD. Contrast this to Roundtrees 77 yarder against illinois, in which he was tracked down by terry Hawthorne. The defense is going to be really bad this season
I'm going to have to disagree with you entirely about defense. Remember that the entire game was 1s against 2s, etc., or at least generally. Remember, Tate only managed one TD against the first team defense and only through magic. No big runs (besides Denard) probably means good run defense given our talent at O-line and tailback.
Brandon Moore looks ridiculous. He has to be like 6'6". It would be nice to see him play, but McGee says Koger and Webb are still better at blocking.
@TheZooCrew Yes, thats true. And the NO.1 defense had problems stopping the NO.2 offense from what i saw. They were obviously better then the NO.2 defense, but they still looked pretty bad. Forcier was able to make crisp passes all day long. In real games, that will result in touchdowns. But I will admit that I was impressed with the fact that they didn't give up any long runs.
And yeah, I'm sure Koger and Webb are better blockers, but shit, I'd lik to see Moore utilized as a receiver.
Kenny Demens looked pretty good against the first team offense. He has good lateral speed and hits like a freight train. I wouldn't shed any tears if he replaced Obi. Mouton looked night and day better than last year. He was always either in or a foot away from every tackle on a run play and nearly had a PBU on Gardner which was the awesome pass that Moore caught in a slide.
Roundtree looks like he's improved his track speed. Teric Jones would have caught him last year.
Gallon looked like Steve Smith out there. Tiny, but pretty buff and hits hard. I might vote to have him replace Hemingway as deep threat purely because he has an easier time generating separation.
Rod said this was pretty vanilla and more like a practice than a scrimmage. Don't read too much.
On a final note, remember that we don't have any of our freshman studs on defense on campus yet and Woolfolk and Martin, who will probably be our two best defensive players, were not around.
-on a positive note about the defense: Justin Turner played well. His name was mentioned all day by him making plays
-the punters are TERRIBLE. They couldn't kick it even 25 yards!!! We really need Will Hagerup to stay healthy this season when he enrolls in the summer!... See More
I actually came away from the spring game just as impressed with Tate as Denard. Tate took a bunch of early enrollees, freshman, and backups against the 1st team defense and was able to make plays and even finagled a touchdown. Speaking of which, that TD pass to Stokes was flat-out ridiculous.
Denard looked like a quarterback instead of a fast dude with a ball. He made good reads and looked way more confident in general. No real big runs, but I think that means good run defense, not bad backs.
Well, if Denard keeps this beutiful passing up, i rather have him start over Tate. Denard and his speed with passing is definitly better. I love Tate, but Denard has improved and is here at Michigan to play quarterback. Tate wasn't injured for spring until the last 3 days, and all the reports throughout practice was about how Denard ight have surpassed Tate, after watching this, I beleive them. Just pray for a defense this year.
CHILL OUT! Tate was injured ... he is a stud everybody needs to be a true fan and realize that when he was healthy - games 1 through 5 last year - we all thought he was A GOD. He messed up the second half of the season - that's what happens when you're an INJURED FRESHMAN.
I'd love to see Denard step up and start, but don't get down on Tate already. Jesus.
i was actually optimistic, but the spring game discouraged me. tate didn't impress me, how is he still running with one hand on the ball after all this time? denard was great though, he might even start.

@TheZooCrew I wouldn't call UConn a middling Big East team, put them in a real conference, yeah they're a middling team there, but in the big east they could easily big champions or be on of the top 3 teams.

i love our offense, i hate where tryin to run a 3-3-5 defense i mean i hope to see more of a multiple look defense like run a 46 cover , the 4-2-5, the 4-3, and a lil 3-3-5
...but i dont want to see us trapped into tryin to just runnin all our d plays in a 3-3-5 formation to try to get these kids to learn this!!!

Poole1Dan 1 year ago
-Fitzgerald Toussaint needs to ...start at tailback. Shaw, Cox, and Hopkins looked really slow and hesitant, whereas Toussaint showed toughness between the tackles in addition to his already terrific agility. He could be a beast this season
-Jeremy Gallon caught several passes in traffic. He could be a contributor this season
Poole1Dan 1 year ago

@Poole1Dan
TheZooCrew 1 year ago
@TheZooCrew Yes, thats true. And the NO.1 defense had problems stopping the NO.2 offense from what i saw. They were obviously better then the NO.2 defense, but they still looked pretty bad. Forcier was able to make crisp passes all day long. In real games, that will result in touchdowns. But I will admit that I was impressed with the fact that they didn't give up any long runs.
And yeah, I'm sure Koger and Webb are better blockers, but shit, I'd lik to see Moore utilized as a receiver.

@Poole1Dan

@Poole1Dan
TheZooCrew 1 year ago

TheZooCrew 1 year ago
Well, if Denard keeps this beutiful passing up, i rather have him start over Tate. Denard and his speed with passing is definitly better. I love Tate, but Denard has improved and is here at Michigan to play quarterback. Tate wasn't injured for spring until the last 3 days, and all the reports throughout practice was about how Denard ight have surpassed Tate, after watching this, I beleive them. Just pray for a defense this year.
Go Blue!

Jesus.
Go Blue

i was actually optimistic, but the spring game discouraged me. tate didn't impress me, how is he still running with one hand on the ball after all this time? denard was great though, he might even start.
