Kids just remember. What you see today are watered down second class versions of the originals. Music today is at a low point. R&B is virtually non existent. Pop has been reduced to teeny bopper music. Rap and hip hop today is nothing more than a soliloquy of sex and drugs. Rock and metal has lost its edge. Great ballads are sadly MIA. Probably country has been the most consistent. It will pick up in due time but not for a while until real talent is given the breaks.

When Elvis came out, he was also entirely new. When MJ came out, he was a true evolution from past artists, That can't be said of any artist today. The popular music of today hasn't evolved, it has devolved. When you have numerous so called artists with very little talent dominating the music scene, then there's a serious problem.
