What are you talking about - F40 has biturbo v8, so there's no lag, or it's barely noticeable, especially with such engine (short stroke v8, so it should rev up quick to 4000 rpm, which gives max. torque). If you mean what Clarkson said in Top Gear about slow acceleration from still start, it's not about damn engine, but proper grip due to classic Ferrari layout (MR of course), and still, it's 3.8s 0-100kph, so much faster than your average family car.

Yes, germany lost that battle, but not due to british technology, it was the german arrogance, their misinformation and lack of proper leadership that brought the allies the victory. They had no idea, but at one point had the RAF almost on it's knees. The german pilots had the better fighters & tactics but lousy bombers, the RAF inefficient tactics but great leaders and comms.

Like the Spit the engine would stall under negative G, and the only good things about it were the Merlin, and the fact it was produced in huge numbers.
