This Bug is sick..and anyone who doesn't know that different classes hold titles to "fastest" doesn't have a clue. The red barron is the fastest "door slammer" race only sedan last I recall was 7.98 @ 176 mph.on boxter power..running a street legal Bug is a scarry feeling when you're making power.Skinnes Bug is top of the ine in its "street legal" form.. I'm not a know it all but I own a street legal 550 hp 55 bug(turbo ABA/MK3 VW powered)..Kudos to anyone owning a fast bug..esp VW powered..
@cumbas Take the wheelie bar off and swap the slicks with street tires. Bam, Street legal in most places, only because I doubt it passes smog regulations.
I am rummaging through the net for a boxer that did not sound like one..this is the first. Nice ride. I built one into a strange realm..does not sound like a boxer either. Must be a little something they forgot to mention. ;o)
I guess anything can be so called ( Street Legal ) but then what place are we talking here. In the US lets say Cali hell no it wouldn't be street legal at all along with many other states. Also does it run on 93 octane or less or maybe e85 cause 100 plus octane is not street legal either. Just saying, to many people try to call their race cars street legal when clearly its a race car. I have seen 10.5 cars with tiny fuel cells calling them street cars but couldnt make it down the block on 1 tank
@mixedbreed1282 I drove my Bug 90 miles each way to the track and could get into the low 11s, It had a 2.1 engine built from stuff mostly from Gene Burg back in the 70s. The only problem I ever had with the engine was valve seats staying put, but that was rare. Two big things going for Bugs were weight to horsepower ratio and the launch out of the hole was hard to beat. With a suspension redo, close ratio trans, slicks and a turbo I could have been into the 9s i'll bet. It did great on pump gas!
omg fastest beetle is not street legal !!!(red baron i mean) its a drag car with totally changed body parts ! this one based on a real beetle, not extended chasis or something else
Horizontally opposed VW configuration? Because you can put an 8000 hp top fuel motor in a bug and call it the worlds fastest with a street pan but its not really a VW engine.
@iluvmy65 Not sure what you mean with "Horizontally opposed VW configuration", but this car has an "flat four" (4cylinder VW boxer engine) placed in the car as from the factory. Only thing is that it is originally a 2,1L engine from a VW T3 bus and not originally from a VW Beetle, but still a VW engine and a a four cylinder boxer engine. The title is maybe a little wrong and should be World fastest Streetlegale beetle, and has now done 8,60 1/4mile.
@iluvmy65 Thats NOT a top Fuel motor T/F is 500 CI blown injected V8 usually on at least a 90% load of nitro, they make 7000 HP on a bad day a T/F motor would tear that thing in half

Btw, "street legal" is such a misnomer anyway...Richie Webb drove his 9 second "street legal" vert all over orange county here in so cal... I personally have a full bodied, full interior, daily driver 65, runs mid tens..
Point is, Erics car is a back halved, pan car, stock vw bodied metal door slammer cept fiberglass front end and rear fenders. While i love watching all fast cars, dont get ur panties in a bunch simply cause im not impressed with transplanting a subaru motor into a vw. Hell i could put a honda cbr motor on a go kart and have the worlds fastest go kart, but build a gokart motor into the worlds fastest and thats a real accomplishment. Btw, " street legal" is such a misnomer anyway, Richie Webb drov
People dont understand the differance between this and the red baron and it sucks because what this car is doing is way more impressive. Anyone who has built a dragster knows what I mean. The Red Baron is still a great car though.
Just out of curiosity: Who is faster? This beetle has now done 8.60 at 1/4mile. Still street legal with syncronized manual gearbox and standard floor pan chassis. I know there is some faster tubular chassi 600kg ProMod beetles but are there anyone which is faster with a street legal pan chassis??
Did you even read my post?? (Or the other post here regarding Eric's Red Baron VS the Skinne Beetle??)

wow, this still amazes me, its like putting a bugatti veyrons engine in a golf kart. suprised he can actually control the bug. lots of reinforcing i bet to handle the torque.
Ferdinand Porsche did a great job back then... And it's really nice to see his cute construction going like hell on the drag today! :)
However, since it's street-legal; did you ever drive at top-speed it on the Autobahn, i.e., in normal traffic conditions? And, do you leave the wheelie bar mounted when driving normally?
@Wochensau First of all it is not my car, but it is owned by Tor Øyvind Skinne. The wing, weeliebars and shute are taken of and replaced by the stock bonnet if driven on the streets. Only takes 15 minutes to change.
As far as I know there has not been any top speed attemts on the high way, that would not be safe in this car. Fastest 1/4mile speed is 272km/h and 8,60 ET last year. That is in 4. gear with the 5speed G50 transmission.
just not impressed. Slapping a wbx motor where it doesnt belong, or the time to build and 800 h.p. motor and get it from the nine's to the 7's over the years. You could put a rocket in a v.w. and do 5's, but it just wouldnt be a v.w. now would it?
@TheEzraboy Wake up man, this car is an amazing work of art and for a street drivable car it could still give most pro stock cars a good run for their money. If you dont think its impressive, try building something to compare to this and we'll see how impressive you think it is then, and for the record, try doing it whilst being legally blind, with only old school tuning methods and a keen ear. Not impressed? You opinion is but a runny fart inside my underpants.
A 8.69 sec/ 1/4 mile car doesnt impress you just beacause it is WBX "crap"??
Calabrese's Red Baron and Skinnes wbx beetle are both incredible fast cars regardless of air cooled or WBX "crap". I have big respect for what Eric does in his 600kg (?) Pro Mod racer. And come on, you can not compare a Pro Mod racer with a 950kg street driven car in a fair way. They are both incredible cars and the worlds fastest. (Racecar vs street driven beetle)
@TheEzraboy Just one yhing to do, BIG congratulations to Eric and his team! And by the way, the WBX Skinne beetle did 8.69 @ 166 mph. STILL street legal. And the still the Worlds Fastest Street legal Beetle. (PS Video of 8.713 if see my other uploads)
@TheEzraboy The red baron is a tubular chasis with a beetle look fiberglass body. This has an original bug body, as well as a reinforced original chassis. Don't know if it was a Vw flat 4 though... Anyways, Red Baron is not a real beetle, and is not street legal. In the description it says "fastest street legal VW beetle with standard bottom plate"
@McStutters I will repeat myself:) "And the red Baron is a street legal, pan car with a H-gear manual transmision??" @bikr1975 Remember is turbo charged and that helps to any naturally aspirated engine, is an artificial induction of the air forced into the combustion chamber, we live in 14.7 K lamba absolute pressure in this atmosphere so the turbo charged systems can reach way above the absolute zero limits meaning you can produce an unlimited horse power!
