@lonkylaine Artists don't write songs so they can find meaning in them later, wouldn't it make more sense for Bono to have chosen his wording so that it can be translated two separate ways. giving the superficial, simple translation, and the deeper, meaningful translation?
The lyrics describe a conversation between Jesus Christ and Judas Iscariot.[1] The first verse discusses The Last Supper; the second is about Judas identifying Jesus with a kiss on the lips in the Garden of Gethsemane; and the final is about Judas' suicide after being overwhelmed with guilt and sadness.
@flashabc this has been one of my favourite U2 songs of all time and i never really gave it a thought what it was about till i read this.ive been so blind.
On my side I am not quite sure. I think Bono found the link with his lyrics and the story of Jesus Christ and Judas Iscariot some time after he wrote that song. To me those lyrics sound like most of the lyrics on the record. It's about a man and a woman and betrayal. There is to much sexual imagery to be something else than a man and a woman. The last verse is clearly describing oral sex. Going down on me, spilling over the brim, waves of regrets waves of joy...it's clear. Great song!

I always wondered if this song was supposed to be about Judas Iscariot and Jesus Christ.
