does practice make you as good as that? or is it all just about being gifted...I ve never tried aerobatics. Is it really insane even inside the airplane? Btw I hold a Canadian CPL and a student at university aviation program.
I guess when you are rich and pretty you dont need skill. Great another barbie doll gets handed an easy life. yay lets all celebrate american mediocrity
Sorry to burst a bubble. Betty Skelton holds the record as the youngest female aerobatic competitor for the U.S. aerobatic title. Betty Skelton was the 1948 woman's National Aerobatic champion at 21 years old flying a Pitts . Incidentally, the youngest competitor for the U.S. men's national aerobatic title was Bill Fischer at the age of 23 flying a Rose Parrakeet at the 1949 Miami All American Air Maneuvers. Bill Fischer died in an air show accident in April 1949.
lol you guys are all really cute in comparing aerobatics to Formula 1. Nothing compares to F1. You guys make it sound as if F1 longitudinal acceleration is a joke. Throw in 5 lateral Gs. PLEASE.
I'm a pilot and heavily admire aerobatic pilots, but you cannot compare both motorsports...sorry.
You can spend less on certificated engineers by getting qualified. UK licensing takes a bit over five years. Funnily enough, the more you know about aircraft the less inclined you are to put the stick into the corners of the cockpit.... I've helped to replace all the angles holding the wings onto a seventy year old Harvard, and am not sure about getting into the cockpit at all! My newest car is fifteen years old, do you think I race it?? And my sinuses are sixty years old..... go, Melissa!
@SmokeyCough A certified engine is always expensive, actually scratch that, anything certified is expensive. The motes are extremely low reving. they are 340 Hp, which is piss all for a 540 cube big block, all be it a flat 6. However this motor has to give its all by 2500 rpm, as it is direct drive to the prop. 540 cubes in a drag car could produce maybe 900 Hp naturally aspirated, except this will be in the 6-8000 rev range.
Also add in the insurance lycoming has to pay for.
I,m sorry that people make comments like that about people who are succeeding at their goal-Good luck Melissa -you are a damned good aerobatic pilot and seem to be very focused -i wish you all the best and i too am trying to get into the performing of aerobatics but i am out of work at the moment-but-the skies the limit so i never say never!!!
Is there a way that you can take a camara with you into the cockpit. The reason is to 'see´ the stunts being performed whilst under the influence of pos/neg G
flown, Pure aerobatic airplanes tend not to be the best cross country travelling machines, because it is difficult to get a single design of airplane to do all things well. This usually translates into more fuel consumption than say an airplane with long slippery wings that is optimised for high cruise speed on little fuel. but still flying at 150knots is a whole lot better than driving..You don't want to weigh down an Extra or Pitts with instruments that would allow it to fly in clouds either.
Air racers have more balls and skills than any other motorsport athletes anywhere. Nascar and Formula 1, motocross, they can all suck it for real. Bunch of losers by comparison, but i'm biased. ;)
@LateNightCable That's not being biased. First of all, nascar only know how to turn left. I love F1 racing, I think it's one of the greatest sports in the world, however, it's still 2d, and in turns it's 4-5g's. Try 10-12 vertical g's, maybe another 10 negative thereafter, all while holding perfect lines. And then throw in Red Bull racing, and please, the most demanding motorsport ON THE PLANET.
Let me guess, you're a troll that counts playing on your computer as flying. Or maybe you do have real hours but it's more like 4.56 right. Oh yeah, learn to spell and use apostrophes. If you're gonna flame somebody with real talent it's the little things that count.
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow at Fleet Week in San Francisco tomorrow! I'm a frustrated, non flying, female pilot and you're officially now my new hero(ine). ;-). Be safe tomorrow!
I saw your comments, rexpem. Glad to know that one can achieve this level of flight by earning it. I dont have any rich relatives either. Ive work really hard just to get to where I am and I am still about 3 years away from flying. Good job Melissa!
@rexpem Thanks for telling us your side of the story. ....not that you need to explain yourself...but it helps understand how these things are achieved. Young people watching these videos need that perspective. Thanks again. When I was young and of course before the Internet, I wanted to be a pilot but didn't know the first thing about how to achieve it. Neither did my parents.... Now with the Internet, kids can know how, and know what they are getting into. The physical requirements I mean.
I didn't think my comment was that bad but then as my Mum always said "if you can't say anything nice...". My appologies if my comment was taken as a slight against Melissa, that was not my intention as i'm sure she is quite charming. She is a better aerobatic pilot than i am..How about that..:)..I think I must have just been watching Julie Clark..Who's ability does not justify the full ride she is given by her oil company sponsors. I wonder where i can get that deal?
Ahh the power of money..and lots of it..She is pretty good but there are lots of better pilots who sadly can't afford to trash a $50 grand engine in 300 hours..
For any disipline or sport there are many variables that must come together, money is just one of the many factors, if these said people were better and wanted to prove it they would find a way, you do not have to start out in the unlimited class. You just need passion and dedication. I know many great very well respected pilots that fly super Decathlons instead of Edge 540's.
Hey buddy, I'm a beginning private pilot just getting into acro...and grew up a poor kid. While I'd usually be right there with ya, having met Melissa, I'm not sure I've ever met a more humble, unassuming, and kind person. You might try it on yourself.
You guys are getting it all wrong. Melissa and I do not have much money... We just work very hard and all the money goes back into the Edge. Melissa started flying in a Cessna 150 airobat, then moved into a citabria then a Pitts etc all the planes were brought and sold as she got better. She never jumped straight into an EDGE it was earned. She started young. My wife owns an expensive plane yes but that does not make her rich. We are quite the opposite.
Pretty low class there Frank. I work my ass off to make sure that airplane is perfect. I don't get a paycheck for turning those wrenches either. English Pr*ck! Ever heard of sponsors? No because you are not good enough to get them.
@tonka1011 Well in reading my comments I would have to agree with you, it does look pretty low class..I honestly did not mean it the way it came across and i would delete it if I could ..You have my unreserved appologies..i don't honestly remember what I was thinking at the time. Pilots are some of the nicest and most encouraging folks you could ever wish to meet and I'm sorry i clearly did not live up to that standard when I wrote that. I wish you both the best for the future
