  • The trailer is better than the movie. I kept waiting for something to happen and nothing did until the last 10 minutes of the movie.

  • hit return key!

  • Could anybody tell me what was in the fathers tin box he dug up,was it the photos at the end?

  • I just watched this movie and loved it... didn't remember anyone speaking english with a russian accent in it though.

    Subtitles.... I LOVE them.

  • oh, come on guys. this is indeed a masterpiece, but i think the trailer is VERY GOOD !!!

  • If it's a Russian movie, with a russian award...why is it the best FOREIGN film?!

  • I actually didn't expect much from it when I first saw this movie, however, I was literally blown away how intense this movie got with just such a simple plot. I absolutely love it.

Oh crap, I probably sound like one of those damn movie site spammers, but I'm for real now. Trailer kind of sucks though.

  • The best film I saw in my whole life

  • Tarkovsy, Sokurov, Zvyagintsev

  • This is damn good movie and is beautifully shot. The young guy that played the older brother actually drowned after the movie was finished in a lake near where they filmed this....

  • @MythicShot

How did he drown? What were the circumstances?

  • @rflukner It was after the movie was shot and he was up in that area again swimming. Got into trouble and drowned is all i know...

  • @MythicShot

Interesting. He returned to the area where his father died due to his sons' behavior. This frequently also happens in reality that the wrongdoer returns to the scene of his crime. In this case it seems that the film's reality and the actual reality were not strictly kept apart by the actor who played that particular son.

  • @MythicShot

I heard that it was literally the day after shooting finished!!

  • Anyone knows the music that is playing in the trailer?

  • @boyoun9 Andrew Dergachev

  • I like this movie a lot but the trailer spoils so much. This movie is probably one if not the most depressing movie I have seen.

  • @jubbjubb155 in Russia, many depressed films. they are more meaningful. good movie The Island.

  • @jubbjubb155 You should try watching " Angela's Ashes " if you find this depressing ! lol

  • russian r stone cold killers

  • Every Ukrainian I know looks just like Vanya lol.

  • This film prooves how can a man make a masterpiece using only

    one camera,a few actors,amazing landscapes,great imagination

and deep feelings. This is the only necessary material.Leave all the

    rest for Hollywood movies.

  • @xamenos00 well, do you disagree that for example, Fincher's, thus hollywood's, Zodiac was a masterpiece?Or Citizen Kane?Or Godfather? What about Elias Kazan's films?Or John Houston's films?Or Scorcese's?Or John Ford's?Even Paul Thomas Anderson and so many others.

  • @MrVasileios7

Zodiac was just typical Hollywood "thriller"...I found it boring and uninspiring to be honest.

But I do agree that there are many American movies which are great but get overlooked because they are from America. However, pretty much every film that I have seen that has had real depth of story and feeling, has been made outside of America.

  • The trailer says and shows too much !

  • You can simply feel the spirit of Tarkovsky in every aspect of this film. He would be proud.

  • This is great film. But it' was't the movie that moved me the most. I've just read about the tragic death of the young actor ,Vladimir Gerin(who is playing as the eldest brother), who had drawn n the lake near Sanit Petersbourg, right before the film's premieer.May his soul Rest in Piece

  • MASTER PEICE!

  • Magiczny. Jeden z najlepszych filmów jaki widziałem.

  • Absolutely wonderful film, and the child actors are a revelation. One of the better films I have seen in years.

  • good cinematography, good story, good actors!, good location..and all...!!!

  • haha if they made like "Return 2" He would first come and then leave, and then return and then leave again x)

  • @Rizorn the dad actually never returned - his return was only imagined by the kids

  • @Rizorn the dad actually never returned - his return was only imagined by the kids

  • @Khaliullin

    Haven't seen the movie ;P

just thought it would be funny with "return 2"

  • @Khaliullin Never heard that one before, explain :)

  • @CroppyBoy1798 That's the idea of the film as I understood it. Kids in need of a man to follow, of a dad. They finally embark on an imagined journey - and on that journey they become men, just as if their father was around to teach them and bring the up. Take a closer look at the final shots that show the photos of the journey taken by the kids - there is no dad on any of them even when we know he should have been there - there are just the kids.

  • @Khaliullin ok, um, thats definitely wrong...

  • dubbed? wtf...

  • Where can I see the full movie??

  • I dont really understand this movie. Was father a criminal or not?

  • great movie. and very human.

  • why is this in ENGLISH????????? its a russia movie, it should be in russian only

  • @AusLander18 to give engllish a chance of understanding really on whats going on .

  • This is my fav movie. I love the ending of this movie. Love it

  • oh wow this is an amazing film

  • i just watched 'koktebel' which was amazing that's how i found this one it looks good too will watch

  • Wow I gotta see this movie.

  • Yeah this is so good film, I just watched it yesterday and loved it! The story is so sad but photography amazingly beautiful... I just red that Andrey's actor has died! :( So sorry, because he was such a great actor.

  • the most powerful film I have seen in a long time.

  • You want to know: 1) Why the guy was away for 12 years. 2) What was in the box. 3) How did he know this far away land so well, like the tower.

  • The father had obviously spent time on that island (born and grew up in that old house?). His not liking fish anymore as he'd had enough of it would also support this, ie having lived/staed on the island for a long time. As for the box, well, I've watched this movie a few times and I still cant figure that one out!

  • @CroppyBoy1798 thats whats so good, there are so many interpretations. the director said it simply represents the fathers absence. everyone has secrets, the box represents the fathers'. thats why it sinks with his body. his past dies with him

  • @608pro I guess you are just used to the super-fast Hollywood movies. This is a different genre. This is contemplative. A lot of people here obviously find this movies "good". "GOOD" is still subjective. Why ask for recommendations?

  • The voice over created for this trailer is terrible - who wrote it? The film is very different and much better than this trite text remotely suggests. And why the stoopid Russian accent? In Russia they speak Russian without any accent, amazing isn't it.

  • This is a splendid movie

  • OMG i think i know what the box had in it after reading a few comment ... i think the box had the pictures of the children and the family before the father left 12 years ago.. the images shown on the very end of the movie.

  • reminds me of Tarkovsky

  • Was this dubbed to English? If so, make sure to watch it in Russian with subtitles instead. This is an amazing film.

  • i hope it comes with subs,

  • Thanks for posting who died.

Way to kill the movie. >_>

  • Actually, the fact the older brother died has nothing to do with the movie. He died after the film was shot, and has nothing to do with the movie.

  • hm.. the narration on this trailer is english... but the film isn't right? I saw this a long time ago on channel 4 early in morning... so can't remember.

  • Brilliant film. Absolutely brilliant.

  • One of the best films I've ever seen. Although i don't like the choice of the narration in english

  • It's a good movie, but it's sad that Vladimir Garin (The guy who plays Andrey) died :/

  • Yeah he really died:( Its sad.. But this movie was one of the best i have ever seen.

  • Yeah the movie kicksass

  • kooool vid

  • this movie is awsome.... :'( sometimes i return to times when i was little son who was not allways good and get punishment...

  • Saw this movie on Swedish Television some months ago. It was very "Russian" and I really liked it.

  • That looks really good X3

  • No,it's a classic Russian film that won awards across Europe..Probably cost a bean to make but then most of the best movies are made on a shoe string. The film carries a tragic story because Vladimir Garin the older of the two boys drowned in the lake in the movie just after the film was completed...

  • "Probably cost a bean to make" ...On IMDB they claim that the total was under half a million US dollars.

    c i n e m a d e m o c r a t i c a . c o m

  • ;p;

  • LOL

  • NO!! And thank god for it too! :oD

  • Why is the trailer in English??

  • It is a brilliant film. A real masterpiece. Do you know anything about the music? It's also wonderful.

  • this is armenian instrument duduk. music is by russian composer Andrey Dergachyov

  • thanks korefasha

  • This is a beautifully tragic Russian film. The cinematography is incredibly artistic; every shot feels like a painting, a postcard of the characters' harsh reality. At times the desaturated, high contrast quality of the film can feel oppressive, making mundane and even relatively joyful scenes seem tinged with despair, but overall the brilliance of the acting from everyone involved (especially the two children) and the powerful plot make this an achingly sombre and moving tale. A must see :)

  • I just watched that! I had so much of emotions after watching! And when I found out that an actor who played here Andrej drowned in the lake 2 month after film was shoot I was almoust crying! :(

  • Yeah it is incredibly sad, he'll never know the impact or excellence of his acting, and to die at such a young age seems cruel. I was astounded at how well both of the children playing Ivan and Andrey acted. I don't know how they could convey exactly the right emotions through such subtle expressions at such a young age, but they managed it. Hopefully with this film Vladimir Garin will persist in people's memories for a long time to come.

  • lublu etu pesniu i filmu kaniesna

i love this song and the movie of course

  • Well, it's a trailer..

commenting on the film is not the same as giving spoilers.

You can say something like that, but then you have to warn people for spoilers.

  • What is name of this music? Please help me! I can't find that song!

  • Well on IMDB nobody mentioned this! Do you think people read this before they see the film?

  • well, I haven't seen the film yet and I read it.. I just wanted to see wat it was about and read what other people thought about it, but I didn't want to know the ending

  • Sorry, I thought youtube was for discussing the films/commenting on them.

  • SERIOUSLY-- FUCK YOU FOR SPOILING IT!!! god dammit!!

  • Youtube is for COMMENTING on the film, if youre seriously dumb enough to read the comments before you see the film, WTF do you expect?

  • A very emotional, deep, brilliant movie.

And out of a country which rarely ever makes half-decent movies anymore. Sad, really. Изгнание I have not watched yet.

  • i love this movie,director-bardzo mądry film o relacjach ojca z dziećmi

  • i've seen it years ago and i still woder what the eck is in the box???? anyone can tell????

  • I read on IMDB so many explanations for what the focks in the box. Like 4 pages. I think it is his love for his kids and what he gave to them, it went down with him.

Such a sad movie, like Japanese Story.

  • I'm not sure that the box has any true symbolic meaning, other than to continue the mystery of what suspicious activities the father was getting up to.

  • What a film this is, it's quite touching. I am a fan of foreign films and I do like Russian cinema :)

Also British films are good as well, gotta fly the flag for Britain too ;)

  • Hey LonelinessJerry-

Don't be so quick to judge Americans. We DO NOT just love Hollywood movies targeted for 14-year-old boys....we also enjoy bowling, nachos, and baggy pants. Shame on you!

  • incredible movie, awesome director, photography and talented actors.

  • i love this movie

  • Why would someone give a thumbs down to our comments on a great movie?

  • Actor Vladimir Garin, who played Andrei died on 25 June 2003 (shortly after the shooting of the movie was completed) in the lake not far from the one in which the movie was shot. How devastating is that?

  • I think it would be devastating for me too. Also I say at least Vladimir is remembered in a great movie that took alot out of everyone to finish. If I live in America and it touched me then I say that there is success.

  • if u live in america - u shouldnt know anything except hollywood movies, which are expensive and often stupid for 10-13y.o. guys.

    sry for that cruel true.

  • I only hope this kid isnt beat up to much to try again because of the fact that good friend died.He is a good actor.Iv'e watched and I KNOW,THAT GUY COULD GO TO HOLLYWOOD AND DO WELL!He's REAL and it came across to anyone seeing this picture.GREAT JOB IVAN.

  • Ivan is teh best in this movie.I used to get beat as a kid by my parents, and this movie made more sense to me then any American movie Iv'e seen.BRAVO,BRAVO,BRAVO.This movie was THE BEST THE FUCKING BEST.For anyone that missed their fathe,For anyone that had a screwed up chilhood,For anyone that every wants to talk to their dad,For anyone.Very good job IVAN.VERY GOOD!

  • The boy Ivan Dob did a hell of a job.I only hope he isnt broken beyond repair from the lose of a great friend in real life. The music sounds almost arab, the composer the director and the actors did one hell of a job. They made a movie for once that was REAL.I walked in BlockBuster video in the foriegn section and The Return stuck out Im glad I rented it because it wasnt a waste of time!BRAVO!!

  • I watched this movie in awe! It was great Im an American who knows hardships and the lose of friends. This movie The Return is a clear work of art! This kid Ivan was best friends on the set with this other kid that died in the waters.Thats so horrible that he now is probley 18 or 20 years old and that was his friend.I saw the pictures. This was one HELL OF A MOVIE all the way around. The Directors should be proud,THEY CREATED A GENIOUS MASTER PEICE.THANKS FOR THAT.THANKS!

  • He is my favorite new Russian director. This film is very powerful. His next movie "Banishment" is also great.

  • Russian movies are so good. Not only Tarkovsky's movies but also Sokurov's movies and this one are absolutely amazing.

  • agree

  • Russian movies are so good. Not only Tarkovsky's movies but also Sokurov's movies and this one are absolutely amazing.

  • agree :)

  • Vladmir Garin: a tragic loss...the boy who never was.

As a reply to Rob, the 'cheap' Russian voiceover is provided by the actor who played Ivan- Ivan Dobronravrov. If the accent sounds cheap and fake, it's probably just how he speaks English :)

  • haha, seriously?

if that's true, they should have recognised what it actually sounded like and ditched it

  • or he's putting on the accent, showmanship if you like...

  • Vladimir Garin....may you rest in peace

  • Great movie!!Shame the trailer shows key points in the movie.

    *SPOILER WARNING*

Only down side i didnt like..was the finale kept me hanging with so many questions..was it meant to be like that?Like what was inside the box?Why was the island so special. What was the father history..who was he talking to on the phone??

  • this film is beautiful,

but i have to say that a hate this advert.

it is totally destroyed by that ridiculous voice over.

the fake russian accent is awful, and they can't seem to help themselves having to provide a back-story for an american audience, something which doesn't tally with the style of the film...

  • totally agree *sigh*

  • Beautiful piece of russian cinema! I watched it in a Barcelona art house, one of the most enigmatic and moving stuff I've seen in a while...
