It's a sadness to hear how these singers sing today compared to how they use to sing back in the day... All we hear is a lot of technical to the voices today instead of the pure voice itself... This is pure soul singing and performance at its best...The only person who I can say who has it now days is Jennifer Hudson and sometimes I don't feel they is letter her use her voice to the fullest with those non vocal songs they are giving her.

I've always wanted to hear Little Richard do a gospel album in his true style. He recorded some in the 50s that had him sounding like he was deep inside of my case. Love Al Green too! I hope to see both of those two singers in concert someday!

I'd say from about 1979 to right about 1994-1995, Patti Labelle could be considered to have the best voice ever. Oprah said it best: "If we were to have an intergalactic singing competition, the Earth would send Patti Labelle." We would.
Of course she can still blow today in her 60s, but I believe that like 15-16 year gap she did the most amazing thing with her voice. And with EASE. The runs, riffs, and sheer power crushes anyone and EVERYONE.

I'd say from about 1979 to right about 1994-1995, Patti Labelle could be considered to have the best voice ever. Oprah said it best: "If we were to have an intergalactic singing competition, the Earth would send Patti Labelle." We would.
Of course she can still blow today in her 60s, but I believe that like 15-16 year gap she did the most amazing thing with her voice. And with EASE. The runs, riffs, and sheer power crushes anyone and EVERYONE.

@tangled55 I think I agree, but 90-96 Whitney was BEAST, MYTHOLOGICAL BEAST (does anybody else really like the amber tones of her crack damaged voice? I really love the way she sounds on her last record only problem is it's 15 years or so premature)

This was my first memory of Patti and my favorite performance to date. I was 5 years old when this aired and I still have it on VHS. I can remember rewinding the tape just to see her "glitter dress". Thanks for posting this.

I remeber an old interview for "Lift Every Voice" on BET where Patti talked about belonging to a churchin her younger years where this minister juged her and mocked her in front of the entire congregation for her singing. But mind oyu she was paticipating in church functions, cooking for them, the whole nine yards.

I love the choir reactions to Patti's singing they knew history in the making....Too bad Little Richard changed clothes he missed the whole performance a real queen would have stuck around to hear Patti LOL....I had the whole show on VHS in my humble opinion the finest 3 hours of television ever I loaned it to a friend only to have never returned now thanks to Youtube I can watch whenever and often
