Actually, I think obesity can be partly attributed to the unrealistic body images the media imposes, also. A lot of obese people are emotional eaters, and I think in most cases these people feel extremely bad about their bodies as well. Being forced to look at extremely skinny people all the time (whether it be mannequins or models), can push you in either of these extreme directions (extreme overeating or starvation), especially if you have low self esteem or if you're emotionally unstable.

Take an example of diabetes, fat cells release signals which cause other cells to become resistant to insulin, which makes your body produce more till you can't produce anymore and leads to diabetes. It's a combination affect, and diabetes then can exacerbate cardiovascular disease, etc.

I know about the pressures to be skinny, but, woman on this vid, the US has an OBESITY epidemic, not an anorexic epidemic... Both are serious problems, I know some girls in my family that have gone to the hospital due to malnutrition but I also know some girls that have DIED from complications from gastric bypasses and stomach stapling.

@IntaFlex most of what I listed is caused by diet...which can affect your weight...which can affect your diet...which can affect your weight...which can affect your diet. Take an example of diabetes, fat cells release signals which cause other cells to become resistant to insulin, which makes your body produce more till you can't produce anymore and leads to diabetes. It's a combination affect, and diabetes then can exacerbate cardiovascular disease, etc.

So i don't know what b.s. you have been reading, and i'm not trying to pull rank on anybody, but i'm in medical school and have not only studied the biochemistry of fat and it's effects, but also how calorie restriction can prolong life. of course the extreme of being skinny(severly malnourished) isn't good.

I agree with Skjj on the issue of the actual eating disorder in the Western World being obicity and not anorexia.
Adding to this is the fact that people in countries like Somalia, Sierra Leone and Bangladesh are the ones starving.
The problem is that especially in the US people have the possibility of eat a large number of healthy foods and yes you can also eat a healthy burger. The problem however, are the additives that companies pump into food products which affect people's metabolisms.

I've been a skinny, petite girl my whole life, and let me say that I've gotten more crap for it then most of the bigger girls in high school. Yes, there is pressure from the media to be skinny, but there's just as much emphasis on having big boobs, big butt, perfect nose, on and on.
