Hmm, it was not those foot prints that date the "split" with outher apes. It is DNA analysis. The estimated divergence from human-chimp is 4.7 MYA and the divergence between gorillas and humans (and chimps) is 7.2 MYA. However mitochondrial DNA shows that the most common ancestor of all homo sapiens dates from 140-290 TYA. The hominids between those dates are NOT all depicted as "modern", just read Wki "Human Evolution"

Changing the size of a given appendage is relatively easy, evolutionarily speaking. What is difficult is making the assertion that humans and chimps are "light years" away. That is in no way accurate. Look at the genomes on UCSC. They are almost identical.

Actually genetic evidence suggests that the split between humans and neandertals happened approximately 3-500000 years ago, not 100,000. Modern humans were well established by that time. Interbreeding with neandertals continued over this time though.

Scientists say that two humans of different race on the opposite sides of the world have more in common genetically than two chimps/monkeys from the same gene pool. That means when humans first came about, there were very few of them. Then, when you take in consideration what loyd pye says about how we have so many "mistakes" in our genes(more than any other animal by a large margin) might prove that point because those bad genes/dna could be from insest from the first humans.
