I get Karl's point that if you both have the same memories then how could either one be sure they were the original but surely, unless the cloning is instantaneous, the original Karl will have memory of the time between the beginning and end of the cloning process whereas the clone will only have memories up until the cloning process and then memories of exiting the facility as the clone. So they will know who's who. Original Karl could have memories of seeing the clone developing.
he means he doesn't know if he is the clone but he said how would he know which one he was so even if he is the clone he is himself and if he would have worded it differently it would have made more sense
Guys, keep in mind that Ricky and Steve are playing bullies to get the best out of Karl - that's the whole joke of the series. If you allow me to kill the joke for a bit; yes, Karl is right here, in philosophy it's called the problem of knowledge, and Karl's reasoning is entirely valid. But the joke is that Ricky and Steve oppose Karl to get the best out of him.
lol this clip actually annoys me because the thing is that Karl is completely right but Ricky and Steve just call him an idiot. This isn't the first time this has happened either
@remotetea Geek's rule the world. Nerd's read spiderman comics and comment on youtube about it hoping people will think they are quirky and different. There is a slight difference between you and bill gates.
The "mean Karl" is fucking hilarious, feeding birds seltzer pellets so they explode, stickin a gum wad on the park bench, and shoving the guy reading the paper! I was laughing so hard I started crying
I love how they drew Ricky at :43 after Karl says "How would I know which one I was?" It's like his jaw drops & he's utterly flabbergasted at how retarded Karl's unnecessary question was.
No, Karl is not right, because this is a hypothetical question. He constructs parameters that were never neccesary. He complicates simple questions so that he can no longer answer them. His answer was quite interesting, sure, but he didn't answer the question he was given, that has always been the main reason why he is a fool
Yup, at the back of my mind that's exactly the same question I would ask. But poor Karl is just not very good at articulating what he means even though it was a really smart question. He should have said, "Well, if my doppleganger thinks EXACTLY what I think, including the same memories, then they think they are the real me just as much as I do, so couldn't it be possible that I was the doppleganger?"
Some of you have been listening to Karl too long. Irrespective of what he meant, what he said was 'How would I know which one was me' and regardless of whether he is the clone or not he would know which one he was.
A typical example of his choice of words letting him down.
For assistance in understanding Karl please refer to the the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry 'Qualitative Essences and a Final Defense for Plantinga'.
actually Karl has a very good point. Given: the Clone is exactly like him with the identical mind and experiences and also believes that he is the real one. Now to both appears clear they are the real Karl. So it is possible to Karl that he is the clone and just thinks he is the real one, because the clone will be thinking exactly the same: that he is real even though he isn't. Obviously Karl still is Karl, but he cannot be sure he isn't the clone anymore. He would need someone to tell him.
I think Karl's stupidity does't come from him saying a stupid thing like "How would I know which one I was" I think it comes from his inability to say what he really means with his question. I think what he meant to ask was "How would I know if I am the real Karl or if I am just the clone"
Karl made a very valid point, he just worded it horribly. when he said "how would i know which one i was" i'm pretty sure what he really meant was, how would he know which one was the real Karl and which is the doppleganger. If they both shared the same memories then to them they are both 'real'
I think he actually means, if you had a clone with all the same memories and experiences, how would you know if you weren't the clone? What makes a person is in part natural and in part all the sensory information received throughout their lives. You can't just "know" you're you, because if that were the case your dopelganger would be thinking the exact same thing. It's similar to the situation in the film "the 6th day".
@MrEDDFire I agree - his perception of the world seems rather different to that which is considered "conventional", but says some wonderfully clever things. It's a shame Ricky and Steve had a go at him for that, as Karl is exactly correct.
@fustilarian1 That's a fair point but ... as always Karl doesn't vocalise it very well. I think everyone's original assumption is that Karl is, for some weird reason, is looking on at both "Karls" and doesn't know which one he is. It depends if the doppelganger is 'inserted' into Karl's life and if he knows that is taking place.
... The more I think about it, the more you could be right and Karl is a true genius ... I'm scared.
@fustilarian1 That's true but the question is: Was Karl thinking that? Possibly, but whether he did or not the funny part is that he just simply said :How would I know which one I was?
Yeah, he was right in a way lol. But in the situation Karl knows that he was cloned. The question was asked, if you were cloned what would you do with that clone. So the real person knows who was cloned.
@soadpwnsyou Well, it depends... They do not really make it explicit whether there is a difference between the memory of Karl and his doppelganger. I would still say that his question was valid since they could still have meant either case.
@fustilarian1 Except for there to be a clone there also needs to be an "original copy", so to speak. It's pretty clear you're the original when they got the DNA from you.
@Mynameisnotooo No, that isn't a solution to working out which one is which, because the memory of the clone could also include the extraction of the DNA, but practically it would be tricky to insert a clone into Karl's life without there being any discrepancies in their memory (though probably trivial compared to cloning in itself), whilst he is asleep would work I guess.
@fustilarian1 - exactly, you would know you were you, you just wouldn't know if you were the clone or the original. but karl didn't say that. he was too vague and ricky pounced on him again haha!
If the "cloning" process needed let's say Karl to be unconscious and after that, when they woke up had the same memories, then they couldn't know which one was the real Karl. Karl is right in this example. :P
@pianor91 not really, I don't think ricky and steve failed to understand what Karl was saying, what he's saying isn't even complicated to be honest, ricky and steve were taking the mick out of him because it's just a silly question, and instead of imagining what he could do with a doppleganger (that he would never be able to have anyway) he's trying to find flaws and loopholes in the question, as if he would ever have a doppleganger
@pianor91 no. no he isn't you dopey twat. Because the question is what would you hypothetically do with your doppleganger? It's an impossible situation. The proper answer to the question would be to say what you would do with your clone, NOT question if you are the real one
there might be subtle differences, because, despite being twins you would eventually be in two different places which means different memories. Even if you dont know if your the original, you'd probably have a sense of individuality
You know, sometimes I wish I was in the studio with them to help Karl out a little bit because, when you think about it, he's asking a pretty good question, if not phrased correctly. What he meant was "How would I know if I'm the original or the clone?" I mean, if it is a clone, then it would have the same appearance, thoughts, feelings, memories, and actions as Karl and it would also believe that the clone is the original
I think what Karl meant to say was: "How would I know if I was the original or the clone? because we would be exactly the same" but Ricky and Steve thought he meant that he wouldn't know if he was himself.
@Thewarrior26 Yeah, Karl often has good points and good questions but he phrases them so bizarrely that they sound stupid. I know it's a part of their dynamic for Ricky to shout Karl down when he gets off the rails, but he's often too quick to judge. If Ricky and Steve had realized what Karl was actually saying they could've had an interesting conversation about clone ethics or something and coax something genuinely stupid out of Karl, now they just laugh at what is ultimately a good question.
I know Ricky's role in this show is sort of to make Karl look more stupid but Karl's got a point. If they're the same then the clone would have the memories and perhaps think that himself was the original and then the real original would start doubting himself.
I think what Karl's getting at is "how would I know if I was the original or the clone?" Because, if it truly is a clone, the clone would think he was the original as well.
If you haven't seen "The Sixth Day" with Arnold Schwarzenegger but intend to, don't read this comment.
Karl's question was perfectly valid. If you have a clone who's thoughts, memories and feelings were identical to your own, you couldn't be sure that you were in fact the original and not the clone, as per the sixth day, when the protagonist of the entire film turns out to be the clone.
I think Karl might have meant - how would he know hes not the clone. So what he said is not as silly as they make out. :) But then he says about seeing the same thing, so maybe it is...
I don't think Karl's question of 'How would i know which one i was?' is stupid. Because both would have exactly the same thoughts and memories so how could you be sure you were you
sometimes it pisses me off that ricky and john talk like they're so much smarter than poor Karl, when really they're not much smarter at all, and maybe even less.
I don't understand why they mock him about that question:"How would I know which one I was". Karl is absolutely right here, they would both argue that they are the "real" one. I don't think Ricky and Stephen thought this through.
I think most of the time, Karl brings up valid points but doesn't do a good job of getting them across to Ricky and Steve, who both are quick to bully him for being stupid.
@InYourPocket87 No he just says really stupid things for comedic effect. What he says has no actual merit or no depth to it, It's purely comedic gold.
For once I agree in some points with Karl. And, yes, although "How would I know which one I was?" might seem stupid, think about it. You are identical. You both are the real one. Or at least you both think you are the real one. And you both understand you might not be the real one, because if you were the false one you would think exactly like this and there's no difference between the 2 of you.
@DerfRellim11 . not trying to be brilliant or funny, just telling the telling the truth. there's always 1 guy like you that comments about people quoting their favorite line of the clip. much more strange than quoting.
@SparksDrinker right, then rude. its very rude to quote the funniest line from a video, especially since the most liked comment is always showing at the bottom of the video. lame, rude, and a bit crazy. i'm over it though, i'm not going to argue this out with a teenage div like yourself.
@DerfRellim11 . i'm not sure why you keep trying to guess my age and make it part of your argument, but its a sign you don't trust your own point. anyway you don't make much sense. no one is forcing you to read the comments before watching the video.
@marudoethiopia I agree...sometimes I think Karl is the smartest of the 3 - He says things that are not always sheep/popular thought. If you're really listening, he makes you think(That or you get a different perspective)
I finally get what Karl meant with 'how would I know with one I was'. It's not stupid at all. The doppelganger would be identical, so he would be just as convinced that he's the real Karl. So Karl is right to ask how he would know which one he was, because "knowing" you are the real Karl in that scenario wouldn't mean anything.
@ytzuigt it wouldn't matter what the doppelganger claims. if the cops caught a murderer, & they had enough evidence to get him in jail, it wouldn't matter how many times the murderer claims he didn't do it, because the truth is already known. in the hypothesis stephen introduced, karl should already know that he's the real karl, so the doppelganger simply claiming he's the real one wouldn't affect anything in terms of karl.
@RushIsTheBest1 No you don't understand. The point is that the doppelganger would be exactly the same, so he would be just as convinced that he's the real one; the doppelganger also "knows" he's the real Karl, and experiences the world as if he's the real Karl. So the fact that Karl "knows" he is in fact the real Karl doesn't guarantee anything. That's what KP was trying to say I think, which actually isn't stupid at all.
@ytzuigt If you had a doppelganger looking at you & telling you he's the real one, would you all of a sudden question yourself? I understand what you're trying to say, & it's not as stupid as they made it seem, but the doppelganger claiming he's the real one doesn't guarantee anything either. The only people who wouldn't know the truth are the people around them. Just because someone is convinced of something doesn't make it truth.
@RushIsTheBest1; "Just because someone is convinced of something doesn't make it truth" that was exactly my point. Both of them would be convinced that they are the real one, but their convictions wouldn't guarantee them anything.
Going back to Karl's quote, I will say he would know which one he was, but he could never know whether he was the real one. Because, as you say, "Just because someone is convinced of something doesn't make it truth", whether it's Karl or the doppelganger.
@ytzuigt "I will say he would know which one he was, but he could never know whether he was the real one." That is a contradiction. It's not possible for him to know which one is him if he doesn't know if he's the real one. That aside, where do you think the doppelganger came from? Karl is the one waking up in his own bed with Suzanne next to him, but the doppelganger wouldn't. Just that should confirm for Karl that he is the real one.
@RushIsTheBest1 It's not a contradiction: he knows which one out of the two he is since he experiences himself and can see the other one, but he can't know for sure whether he's the real/original one because the other one thinks exactly the same about it.
Of course if you portray the scenario with him lying next to Suzanne and the doppelganger coming in, thén he would know he's the real one. But there was never any mention of that.
Anyway, quite a long discussion to have about Karl's drivel.
@ytzuigt Lol I was thinking the same thing, but I kind of enjoy arguing because if you do end up being wrong then all that happens is you learn a little bit more. As for my dispute of the contradiction, I thought of that as I was working today, but it's a given that he is one of the two. If the waking up scenario doesn't occur, then I would agree that there is no way for Karl to know which one he is until the next day. I don't know about you but I'm ready to call this myth busted
Does the mind rule the mind or the mind rules the body? I don't know.

@pianor91 no. no he isn't you dopey twat. Because the question is what would you hypothetically do with your doppleganger? It's an impossible situation. The proper answer to the question would be to say what you would do with your clone, NOT question if you are the real one
HeroPrinnyDood 2 months ago
@pianor91 I know, he does make a valid point. Does sensation alone make you... you? :P I love how Gervais does nothing useful.

i really know what karl is saying if he had the same memories as me how would u know if it was really my memories or his
godzillafan479 7 months ago
@godzillafan479
there might be subtle differences, because, despite being twins you would eventually be in two different places which means different memories. Even if you dont know if your the original, you'd probably have a sense of individuality

WeirdoJames 7 months ago
You know, sometimes I wish I was in the studio with them to help Karl out a little bit because, when you think about it, he's asking a pretty good question, if not phrased correctly. What he meant was "How would I know if I'm the original or the clone?" I mean, if it is a clone, then it would have the same appearance, thoughts, feelings, memories, and actions as Karl and it would also believe that the clone is the original
PPKDude852 7 months ago
Karl: How would I know which one I was?
Stephen: LOL
Ricky: *jaw drops*
LithiumDynamite 7 months ago 4
I think what Karl meant to say was: "How would I know if I was the original or the clone? because we would be exactly the same" but Ricky and Steve thought he meant that he wouldn't know if he was himself.

@Thewarrior26 no karl is an idiot and has a head like a fucking orange
adrianjemond 7 months ago
@Thewarrior26 Yeah, Karl often has good points and good questions but he phrases them so bizarrely that they sound stupid. I know it's a part of their dynamic for Ricky to shout Karl down when he gets off the rails, but he's often too quick to judge. If Ricky and Steve had realized what Karl was actually saying they could've had an interesting conversation about clone ethics or something and coax something genuinely stupid out of Karl, now they just laugh at what is ultimately a good question.

phatlip2 7 months ago
I know Ricky's role in this show is sort of to make Karl look more stupid but Karl's got a point. If they're the same then the clone would have the memories and perhaps think that himself was the original and then the real original would start doubting himself.
CounterNerd 7 months ago 2
I think what Karl's getting at is "how would I know if I was the original or the clone?" Because, if it truly is a clone, the clone would think he was the original as well.

If you haven't seen "The Sixth Day" with Arnold Schwarzenegger but intend to, don't read this comment.
Karl's question was perfectly valid. If you have a clone who's thoughts, memories and feelings were identical to your own, you couldn't be sure that you were in fact the original and not the clone, as per the sixth day, when the protagonist of the entire film turns out to be the clone.
HalfkastHybrid 8 months ago
@HalfkastHybrid It's funny because he phrased the question incorrectly, but what he meant to ask was actually pretty profound lol.
baughskeet 8 months ago
I think Karl might have meant - how would he know hes not the clone. So what he said is not as silly as they make out. :) But then he says about seeing the same thing, so maybe it is...

I don't understand why they mock him about that question:"How would I know which one I was". Karl is absolutely right here, they would both argue that they are the "real" one. I don't think Ricky and Stephen thought this through.

@InYourPocket87 Well, you have to admit, Karl is really a intelligent guy, and he can bring excellent points, but has a pretty stupid way to say.

@InYourPocket87 No he just says really stupid things for comedic effect. What he says has no actual merit or no depth to it, It's purely comedic gold.

The best way to know which one is you is to punch yourself in the face. You're the one who is in pain... and has a black eye
CyberJoeyO 10 months ago
For once I agree in some points with Karl. And, yes, although "How would I know which one I was?" might seem stupid, think about it. You are identical. You both are the real one. Or at least you both think you are the real one. And you both understand you might not be the real one, because if you were the false one you would think exactly like this and there's no difference between the 2 of you.

@DerfRellim11 . not trying to be brilliant or funny, just telling the telling the truth. there's always 1 guy like you that comments about people quoting their favorite line of the clip. much more strange than quoting.
SparksDrinker 9 months ago
@SparksDrinker right, then rude. its very rude to quote the funniest line from a video, especially since the most liked comment is always showing at the bottom of the video. lame, rude, and a bit crazy. i'm over it though, i'm not going to argue this out with a teenage div like yourself.
DerfRellim11 9 months ago
@DerfRellim11 . i'm not sure why you keep trying to guess my age and make it part of your argument, but its a sign you don't trust your own point. anyway you don't make much sense. no one is forcing you to read the comments before watching the video.

I finally get what Karl meant with 'how would I know with one I was'. It's not stupid at all. The doppelganger would be identical, so he would be just as convinced that he's the real Karl. So Karl is right to ask how he would know which one he was, because "knowing" you are the real Karl in that scenario wouldn't mean anything.
ytzuigt 1 year ago
@ytzuigt it wouldn't matter what the doppelganger claims. if the cops caught a murderer, & they had enough evidence to get him in jail, it wouldn't matter how many times the murderer claims he didn't do it, because the truth is already known. in the hypothesis stephen introduced, karl should already know that he's the real karl, so the doppelganger simply claiming he's the real one wouldn't affect anything in terms of karl.
RushIsTheBest1 1 year ago
@RushIsTheBest1 No you don't understand. The point is that the doppelganger would be exactly the same, so he would be just as convinced that he's the real one; the doppelganger also "knows" he's the real Karl, and experiences the world as if he's the real Karl. So the fact that Karl "knows" he is in fact the real Karl doesn't guarantee anything. That's what KP was trying to say I think, which actually isn't stupid at all.
ytzuigt 1 year ago
@ytzuigt If you had a doppelganger looking at you & telling you he's the real one, would you all of a sudden question yourself? I understand what you're trying to say, & it's not as stupid as they made it seem, but the doppelganger claiming he's the real one doesn't guarantee anything either. The only people who wouldn't know the truth are the people around them. Just because someone is convinced of something doesn't make it truth.
RushIsTheBest1 1 year ago
@RushIsTheBest1; "Just because someone is convinced of something doesn't make it truth" that was exactly my point. Both of them would be convinced that they are the real one, but their convictions wouldn't guarantee them anything.
Going back to Karl's quote, I will say he would know which one he was, but he could never know whether he was the real one. Because, as you say, "Just because someone is convinced of something doesn't make it truth", whether it's Karl or the doppelganger.
ytzuigt 1 year ago
@ytzuigt "I will say he would know which one he was, but he could never know whether he was the real one." That is a contradiction. It's not possible for him to know which one is him if he doesn't know if he's the real one. That aside, where do you think the doppelganger came from? Karl is the one waking up in his own bed with Suzanne next to him, but the doppelganger wouldn't. Just that should confirm for Karl that he is the real one.
RushIsTheBest1 1 year ago
@RushIsTheBest1 It's not a contradiction: he knows which one out of the two he is since he experiences himself and can see the other one, but he can't know for sure whether he's the real/original one because the other one thinks exactly the same about it.
Of course if you portray the scenario with him lying next to Suzanne and the doppelganger coming in, thén he would know he's the real one. But there was never any mention of that.
Anyway, quite a long discussion to have about Karl's drivel.
ytzuigt 1 year ago
@ytzuigt Lol I was thinking the same thing, but I kind of enjoy arguing because if you do end up being wrong then all that happens is you learn a little bit more. As for my dispute of the contradiction, I thought of that as I was working today, but it's a given that he is one of the two. If the waking up scenario doesn't occur, then I would agree that there is no way for Karl to know which one he is until the next day. I don't know about you but I'm ready to call this myth busted
