hmong/miao and han share one ancestor, but that ancestor was long long before chi you, huang di and yan di. the modern cultures only count back as far as those 3. yes, china as a nation counts all 3, but han people only count huang di and yan di and hmong/miao only count chi you.
in the 50's when the government was organizing the minorities, they included dongs and tujias with miao. those 2 protested, they are different people. NOW however, they both adopt many features of the miao culture.
Miao is the official name used in China for Hmong/Mong,Hmu,AHmao,Qho Xiong. The term Miao can't be taken away for these few reasons:1,Miao is already used as an official name for our group. 2, Miao has long been writen in history referrence to our group and to keep that history we must keep Miao. And there are l a lot more reasons but there is not enough space to list them here. So the easiest way is to keep it as is and add your subgroup. i.e. Miaohmong,Miaohmu,MiaoAhmao, Miaoqhoxiong.

It is so hard to tell apart from the Miao(HMONG) & Dongs(Kam). The Dongs wear and dress like the Miao :(

Miao and Han do share the one ancestor. They have the same surname( lastname) almost 99%.
The only different in surname is those others minority group who melt to be han later on.
