  • she would be called a performer only because she standing on a stage - other than that, she's no performer

  • AMO ESTA OBRA DE Tchaikovsky

  • The bowing sound is like "toothbrush" !!

    I Friki'n LOVE THAT !!!!!!!!

  • the round of applause should be 10x louder!

  • Exquisite musicality! Although, may I ask the name of the flutist, as well?

  • MERCI et BRAVO

  • Great performance with sense of being alive overflows.

    Incompleteness but super great talented.

  • wow i'd love to hear you play the classical piece i wrote. its on youtube. its copywritten but she is awesome, a prodigy, and i'd absolutely love to hear my music played on the violin.

  • bravo!

  • come on people, if coughing bothers you that much, maybe it means you need to improve your concentration skills!

  • she's good.

  • 13 ppl where coughing during the piece

  • Certified Intergalactic!

  • I hate who is coughing

  • @koedma , Once, in Chicago I attended a performance of a Mahler symphony by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and in the midst of a serenity slow movement an asshole started coughing loudly and kept doing so for a good 3 minutes. No one in the audience budged and I was rather young then. Now I would go over to the asshole and probably move him physically out myself.

  • @freeqwerqwer i here of a "club" or somthing like that were its mebers do things like cough and make nosie as such. if any onw knows more pleese let us music respecting pepole know

  • @dvpkid , please learn correct English writing before you post messages up here.

  • Magnificent. This girl is an eximious great master of the violin. It's one the most technichal perfect playings of violin concert of Tchaikovsky. Thanks, many thanks.

  • Is it me or the octaves at 5:51 hard to hear the top note? Just something I noticed is all.

  • YouTube the Great Great Grandfather in Composition of Peter I. Tchaikovsky:

    Iosif Andriasov

  • Breath taking!

  • Nice trumpet note at the end!

  • @Haeronthegreat hahahaha fail

  • TENSO//

  • what coughing??..???

  • Comment removed

  • 9.32 9.35 - speed and precision.

  • erm... I might be able to play the drum, but I'd prolly even screw that up, lol.

    Exquisite performance 諏訪内さん!

  • Honest as the day is long for her. But anyway address her as Suwanai San. I think she deserves respect here.

  • she's improved greatly her technique over the years but i must say this performance of her younger self is still one of her bests; it's so refreshing, straightforward and honest.

  • It's too direct and unvarying. The best word to describe it is technical. I suppose her performance was catered to the demands of this competition.

  • i think this was an awsome performance but i think jennifer koh did WAY better

  • Unbelievable mastery of string !

  • Awesome................ I can hear every note crisp and clean no matter how fast.

    Absolutely wonderful....Brava!

  • this is one of the best recordings i have ever heard of this and i have heard so many!

she kicks heifetz ass any day!

  • How in the world did she hold that b-flat, d, and e chord all in one long bow in the beginning? Amazing performance.

  • The video editor should be shot.

Can the camera switching be any worse?

  • hermosa Akiko Suwanai tu Tchaikovsky es brillante tiene toda la eneriga fuerza velocidad ,expresion y musicalidad.

  • how is this performance shitty is kinda o_O to me. I think it was a fine performance. Even with the extra trumpet sound at the end xD

  • her ascending double stops

    left me breathless.

  • Bravo Super !!!

  • たしかこのとき、諏訪内さんは風邪をひいてて、

    38度近い熱があるままの演奏だったと

    ご本人が語っていたのを覚えてます。

    それでこの演奏!

    音楽に対する愛情ですかね。

I remember that she talked when she played this composition and got grand-prix of Tchaikovsky competition, she had a cold and heavy fever.

Even bad condition of health, she played great!!

    BRAVISSIMA!

  • @tosanza

    そりはすごい。

    元気ある演奏だなあと思って聴いてました。

  • BRAVO!!!!

  • lol what if it cut the strings xD

  • Brava!

  • off çok güzel çalıyor

  • une violoniste de très grand talent !

  • omg she's owning that violin!!sounds awesome

  • well....i think she is already perfect actually

at least she already better than us so mush ( i think )

  • That violin doesn't have the same soaring sound as the other top violinists. It doesn't sound like a strad to me.

  • She plays the Dolphin Stradivarious, Jascha Heifetz's former violin

  • Agreed...it would be nice to hear the individual notes. Conductor's fault, no?

  • never thought she was good really...sound??? interpretation??

  • she's suppose to be playing that fast...

a professional like her would not make a mistake as to make the tempo to fast.

  • do you have an idea what 'vivacissimo' means?

  • 'very lively'..?

  • errm... yes very lively (probably :P)

but what i really meant was the tempo marking for bpm > 200

and it was supposed to be an answer to 'yellotheemcee', but i guess utube is showing comments in a weird order

  • VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY LIVELY!!!

im not saying its wrong... im just saying i like the 1st part played a little bit slower... if you listen to oistrahks begining i prefer it at around that tempo to build a more dramatic enter...

  • wat is that book/card they gace her in the end?????? does anyone know the order how she played the programme??????

  • i love this now play

  • WHO THE FUCK IS COUGHING?!?!?!?!

its really pissing me off lol

  • @yellotheemcee I thought some bastard was going to fall off his perch, fucking twat. It spoiled what was a really enjoyable performance.

Glad I wasnt the only one to pick up this dickhead. It doesnt matter to what concert you go to, some shit has to spoil it. Thanks for putting my mind at rest. I thoght it was just me.

  • @cms1947 well i mean if you gotta cough you gotta cough... but cough during the loud parts or something

  • @yellotheemcee its the person who got second place lol

  • @yellotheemcee this happens at each and every performance of this concerto

im starting to see a trend...

  • @yellotheemcee it's the wench in the audience at 0:47 trying to keep tempo.

  • Tchiakowsky wrote only 1 concerto for violin. Beethoven wrote only one as well. Mendelsohn wrote only two, and so did J. Brahms. These works are thought to be the definitive works for violin though, and will never be equalled.

  • iono shostakovitch is pretty beastly both of em

    paganini too

  • Is it me or is the end of this concerto really anticlimactic and unsatisfying? I enjoy this concerto so much and it's one of my favorites in the violin repertoire, but it would be so much more rewarding if Tchaikovsky had written a more satisfying ending for it. Every time I hear the end of it, I frown and it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

  • What? really, bcuz i think the ending is powerful, especially the part where the orchestra and solist sort of battle...

:] its good enough for me. maybe its you...sorry :[

  • I think she's absolutely perfect considering how much pressure she must be under.

  • Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto number ($·/)? anybody knows

  • I believe Tchaikovsky wrote but one vioin concerto.

  • only 1 concerto opus 35

  • thanks yello, :)

  • no one can force anyone to truly practice, think about that...

  • it is a fact that asian parents do push their kids to the limits, but that is to extend their borders. even if the kids don't like music when they're young because they were forced by their parents to learn the instrument, most will start to like it at a more matured age. when that time comes, they will improve more on their musicality at their own accord. i don't think thats a bad thing at all.

  • The best way however is when the child itself has the love for music from start. And actually that can also be reflected in the way they perform and deliver in higher ages.

  • but how many children know what they will want when they're 17?

when they do realize what they want, it will already be too late.

I'm asian, and i had parents who forced me to play since i was 7.

i became really good, but hated it.

but as I grew up, i began to like it more and more and now i love it.

i can't thank my parents enough for starting me at such a young age.

  • her wrist bowing was superb...

i hate wrist bowing so much but i still need to master it...hehe...i hope one day i can master it like her..

  • somebody fucked up the very last note lol sounded like a trumpet to me what a shitty way to end such a badass performance

  • to whoever said asian children are forced to play by their parents, that might be true, but not for her.

someone that doesn't truly love music could not play like this.

  • hey does she keep repeating it in 57.....

  • pushing to the limit while young.... doesn't mean you become mechanical. The fact is most Asians artists are musical.... and playing such concertos in such a young age is beyond ordinary. Enjoyment is subjective. Why dont you just enjoy whatever level you have in playing musical instruments!

  • oh but i do enjoy hte level i play at, infact i have been invited for a scholarship audition for Juliard music school. I myself am asian, and i have witnessed too many asians that have been pushed to practice by their parents.

  • you are young and have not come to realizeation that you do not have to put others down to make yourselflook good. There are only a few in the world who can even play this piece well enough to perform it. Be happy for her accomplishment.

  • as far as suwanai is concerned, her parents didn't push her too much seemingly. she wanted to learn violin by herself when she was 2 years old according to an interview on youtube (watch?v=EXPRjr0eAfs), which is in japanese with no sub though.

  • sorry, the previous comment was for jx88jx.

  • The very last note: The brass is out of tune.

  • lolll yeah

  • so that was that funky noise. lol

thanks i wanted to know what it was. :D

  • It's just false intonation. :)

  • Marvelous!

  • Dude. This movie is like 20 years old.

    And she's only 18 here.

And the fast bowing she's doing is called sautille, not spiccato.

  • There's no point to arguing with you, but I meant that in the 20 or so yrs since this was filmed, she has probably gotten better--and mastered that technique.

So you telling her what she needs to work on doesn't apply because this was so long ago and because she won't see what you wrote.

I'm sure you're COMPLETELY qualified to judge this competition.

  • although you sound really qualified and all, what with not knowing the name of the technique you criticized, the bottom line is that suwanai is now more than twice the age she was in this vid so your advice doesn't apply.

but go find her and maybe give her a lesson. she might enjoy that. especially since she probably still sucks without your advice.

  • LOL...you're preaching to a gold medalist of the Tchaikovsky competition that they need work on spicatto?

    ...lol again

  • lols okay forget that then -_-

  • but what i dont get is that it's not that clean

    0:54 to 0:55

    open e?

  • From looking at her fingering, it does look/sound like an open E.

I think it's also good to note that for recordings, the mic is placed very close to the violin/soloist thus extraneous noises can often be heard in an recording where in a concert hall, you don't hear any of those noises

  • but the audio is taken from a microphone. besides, i'm pretty sure it would still be heard whether or not there are microphones.

i don't know, but something about her bowing makes it seem kind of chok-ish. open E happens again at 4:07 to 4:08.

I'm pretty sure it's not the microphone, but some kind of practice is needed, otherwise, the 2nd time would be much cleaner.

  • i'm more a fan of midori :P

  • 4:14-4:16

  • i mean 5:14-5:16, sorry

  • Not everyone wants to watch musicians "masturbate"

  • Your are great violinist. I been play for about 3 years and struggling, practice two or three hours day and i'm in my 33years. I didn't have chance to take lesson as young due to childhood circumstances. I get frustrated due to not getting results. How do you get so good what do I need to improve myself. I'm doing it all on my own now. I had teacher but they weren't right ones.

  • the only thing I do not like about suwanai is that she is so focused. It doesn't really seem like she enjoys playing, no feeling in her style it sounds superficial, good, but lacking a unique quality. I will say, regardless of my personal opinions she is a phenomenal violinst.

  • You guys who complain that Akiko is "too focused" or "too mechanical" don't know what you are talking about. So is Heifetz not too focused? Heifetz is EVERY bit focused on his playing. And he believes in mechanical practices too. The point is that some of you just don't like the way Akiko looks. Preposterous.

  • I agree with you 100% waistoi.

She has emotion and doesn't have to make ridiculous constipated and arrogant looks.

  • Having read all the posts for this performance I have to say that unless you CAN NOW or EVER HAVE played as well as she did in this performance then you have NO right to criticize either her posture or technique...and yes, I too, am a violin teacher and professional performer for over 30 years, in case that really makes a difference.

  • 已正確的跳弓速度拉奏,流暢,優美,已屬難得,細小的錯誤

    並不影響整體的感覺.

  • "She needs to relax her bow arm"-tubman66 you crack me up! She has one of the most awesome, effortless 'spiccattos' in the known universe! Just listen to those flawless, leaping acsending double-stops at 4:50 and in the coda around 9 min and talk to me about bow arms. BTW I'm also a player/teacher...

  • Nice, but that was 18 years ago... So she's now 36, did a great career and no back issue...

  • great!

I am so glad to hear that I will have to find a new recording of her...she really is something!

  • Wow, your'e kidding right? Did you watch this with the sound turned off? This is one of THE MOST exhilarating, natural and free performances of this work I ever heard. You are making the mistake of expecting her physical gestures, expressions etc to mirror the wonderful music she is making. She has a formidable Zen-like composure which is allowing the real fire of the music to come through, there is so much maturity here and absolutely nothing superfluous in her playing. Turn off your monitor!

  • Then, I'm not gonna take lessons with you!

  • im allergic to you're bullshit tubman66 ...

so what if you're a violin teacher ..

what we wan is the quality of music .. not about you're shits of posture lesson .. bitch ..

  • remarkable!!!!!

  • killer

  • Da yum! (Sorry; she's uber good)

    Some1 coughed at 3:34 =D

  • Fabulous performance!Clear music,not dramatic,

    melodiously.natural.Akiko that keep

  • OMG!

  • this has to be my favorite violin concerto

    good job

...but i think a steadier tempo in the beginning would be GRRRRRREAT!!!

  • The comparison with her is an interesting attempt.

    watch?v=wqUnkAWbDPU

  • OMG!

What just have you said? :O

This is one of the most brilliant violin concertos of all. How can you think that? Tchaikovsky is a genious and this concerto is simply out of this world.

    Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto 4ever : )

  • Well, I'm just giving my opinion.

You don't need to insult me :S

  • I didn't say anything about you.

  • : s

I was with my other account.

  • I was talking to the person who said that the song sucks

  • AH...Sorry

I think you were talking to me...:S

  • oh snap! she's smokin fast!

  • Noble, elegant performance!!!

  • She's so brilliant.

Also, nice last note from the trumpet there :P

  • Very good, Fantastic, Bravo.

  • she just made my made!

    bravooooo :]

  • Her style is so Pure

  • she is nice and talent...i love her!!!

  • Amazingness! =)

  • I think you really have to admit, whatever your tastes, that it really gets your heart pumping!? I could hardly stay firmly seated watching this. Gotta love Tchaik.

  • Bravo bravo to this young woman, whoever she is! It takes so much skill and fortitude to play the Violin Concerto and she did it! Thank you for posting this!

  • her interpretation is satisfactory, and she plays with great gusto. She could try to pause a little more and breathe, really feel this piece. She definitely has talent, and this preformance is quite polished. With just a little more work at expressing what she would really try to convey with this piece, she could be a true master of the violin!

  • wow!

i could not have found a better way to say that!

    thanks! :) (thats all)

  • you only born with this kind of skills!!!whatever you do you just can't became so clear and prestige ....

  • I do not mean to deflate what is obviously a compliment, but babies are born not even able to uphold their own heads...the fact is, it takes roughly 10,000 hours of work to become an expert at something (I am sure Ms. Suwanai has put that in, and then some).

The only thing the performance leaves to be desired, in my opinion, is a more steady tempo in the fast parts.

  • Holy smokes she's fast!!!

  • How old is she?

  • Akiko Suwanai (諏訪内 晶子, Suwanai Akiko, born February 7, 1972)

  • probaly 28 the time when she was playing this, and now she's probably 40

  • No,18the time when she was playing this.

    Now she's 36

  • tchaikovsky on coke.

  • she has talent, i really like her rendition of the paganini. amazing technique. However i dont like her version of this concerto. I think she takes the pace slightly too fast, as if it is rushed, and the sortie loses its tone because of this. Nice performance none the less.

  • wow beautiful, i can play this concerto but not as clear as she did. I'll keep practicing ! 5 stars!

  • I'm playing this at the moment in my youth oirchestra, and it's lovely to be able to see it from the front! as an oboist you can't see much of what the violinist is doing! her interpretation i think is very special, but it's a bit depressing for us other young musicicians - she's so good!

  • Thanks for sharing this masterpiece.

  • 9:04 is so thrilling!

  • when she plays it there seems to be a brilliance in it unlike the other competitors. and her spiccato are really light and crisp (:

  • You are an idiot who don't know 'c' of 'classic'

  • Yes sure, "gio908785" does NOT even know how to spell correctly but swearing all over...

  • Akiko is one of the "best" winners of the tchaikovsky competition so far and most seem to agree with that as do I. Even if this weren't that specially for the tchaik comp thers no way this could be idiotically awfull nor boring. and what's impressive is that she's 16/17 when she won

  • my good friend. get an education in music, then we'll talk

  • Well I feel like a retard compared to that girl. :P

  • lmao join the club.

  • Its impressive and awesome..How old was she when played this piece?

  • she was 17

  • This is so flawless, expressive, lyrical & sublime. Listened to so many performances by numerous renowned artistes but nothing compares with this. Some artistes have that 'tortured' look when playing this piece. Others sound impressive & exciting but strain & bore on extended listening. But this, this is so right in tempo & tonality, so emotionally involving & communicative. Seem so effortless & relax...

  • I totally agree with your comments. I really appreciate this wonderful young lady's exceptional talent and technical skills!
