Roberta Flack is one of the smoothest, most talented singers who has ever lived. I fell in love with her back in the 1970s and I'll always have a crush on her.
this is interesting, not heard this before but came here from first time ever and i don't know if it's the best version of this song but maybe it's meant to be sung like this cause it's a song about a positive guy? i like the slower version though and can't mind who sings it
Oh, Roberta, so lovely! Thank you for taking on this beautiful song many moons ago. It's been part of my life for 35 years!!!! Ha ha, that sounds crazy, I can't believe I'm even old enough to say that. Anyway, it's a beauty and it's been with me forever. No other version holds a candle to yours. Hope you're well, dear!
I remember hearing that the lyrics to Killing Me softly were were inspired by the composer seeing Don McLean in concert. Ironically both McLean's American Pie and Killing Me Softly were up for a grammy in the same category that year. This song, Killing Me Softly, inspired by Don McLean won, Cool story. I think it was 1972.
So many people tried doing their own version of this but I couldn't feel a thing then I listen to Roberta Flack sing it again and she just hits the right spot with her beautiful voice...
I sang this song at the Apollo Theater in NYC and won First place! check it out on my Facebook Fanpage "Krista Musik" or on Youtube: "Amateur Night at the Apollo, First Place Winner Krista Jane (7-27-11)"
i was brought to to hear roberta flack in 1969 or 1970. I'd never heard of her. But the audience fell away when she began to sing and her voice was as strong and clear and beautiful as i've ever heard.
I have never seen someone sing so effortlessly and beautifully! I was only a few years old when this song came out but I is a part of me. So nice to see Roberta sing this classic. Wonderful
@mojojojo928 I think the song came out about '72 or '73. I think I was a sophomore in high school at the time. I remember it was a big hit. Hope that helps a little.
@larryjackson04: Oh, I know when the song itself debuted (I was 2 or 3 at the time, remember it on the car radio in '76/'77 thereabouts as a little kid). My question was when the Japanese television program that this version of the song was recorded on, was shot. ;)
Ok I finally found a version to "favorite" -- I listened to several of her concerts and this one comes the closest to her radio release. In many of the version she speeds the song up way too much. Maybe she got sick of singing it.
This was one of the first 45s I ever bought. I came home and started playing it in my room. My father walked in my room (something he RARELY did) and just stood there listening to this song with me. After the song had finished he told me he loved that song, too. It was the first time my father and I connected with music. Thank you for posting this and brining that memory back to me.
One of the best live shows I ever saw was done by Robert Flack back in 1972 when she was not too famous. I saw her in the gym at Case-Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, in the gym. Sitting on backless bleachers, but boy oh boy could she play that piano and her singing -- just amazing. Thanks for posting this, John.

teresiana2008 nailed it. I don't know how anyone could sing with so much passion unless she was in love. Sung as if it came straight from the heart.

@Campestral supposedly she wrote this song after seeing a young Don Mclean play, so Roberta Flack is the original. Not that any of this matters LOL
