The best live band I have ever seen. But, why do you they refuse to play this song when I am there? I have been there often. You don't play Off He Goes when I am there either.
My complaints are nonsense. Pearl Jam have never disapointed me. They have moved me every show.
Neil Young actually played lead guitar on the original recording. Eddie Vedder said in an interview that Young had been giving him "songwriting lessons," and this is what he came up with.
i wanted to cover this song live but i can't seem to find official lyrics or even ones that just seem right. "i walked alive when you held me in that night"?? ehh..that can't be right...right? oh well maybe it'll just make me try harder to write a song this good. not that i ever could..
"an empty shell seems so easy to crack, i got questions i don't know who the fuck i'm ever gonna ask, i'll just lie alone and wait for the dream that i'm not ugly and you're looking at me" truer words have never been spoken. rock on eddie, stone, mike, jeff, matt, and boom. keep on rocking
the studio version is much better in my opinion. in freudian psychology the " id " represents our base desires. the most fitting accolade to describe eddie vedder is unequivocally, " genius ". grunge at its finest!
The studio version is much better because it's Neil Young on lead guitar. Pearl Jam would have been a lot more interesting with someone like Neil Young as their lead guitarist. Mikes a fine guitarist but he doesn't have one original bone in his body. He's just a student of Hendrix and Page. Most of Pearl Jams electric music is boring. This is one of the handful of songs that is actually interesting as far as their electric work goes and it's mostly because of Neil.
@BarstoolBlues33. i love mccready though, and i'm a bit shocked to hear you say he's unoriginal. though vedder wrote most pj's lyrics mccready wrote most of the music, for instance " given to fly ". and you gotta love his work with mad season.having said that, pearl jam would have been awesome with neil young, they don't call him the grandfather of grunge for nothing. cheers mate!
@mellomex85 Uh...no he didn't. Gossard and Vedder have always been the two primary songwriters for most of the bands duration and have written the music of more songs then anyone else in the band. Mccready has probably had the least input in the compositions out of anyone in the band besides some of the early drummers. You really don't have any idea what you are talking about.
@BarstoolBlues33 are you trying to tell me mccready didn't write the music for given to fly ? if it wasn't for mccready pearl jam wouldn't have come to be. take a quaalude and settle down there tough guy
Did I say that? I'm commenting on how you said mccready wrote most of the bands music when he has written the least probably. Besides that, given to fly is hardly an original composition...it's pretty much Zep's Going to California reworked slightly. Lets face it, songwriting was never Mike's forte.
@BarstoolBlues33 each to their own but yeah nearly every lead guitarist of the last 20yrs have copied other peoples stlye..but yeah i have been to a hell of a number of shows..ac/dc...the doors..pink floyd..creed..rhcp..muse..metallica..slipknot..rolling stones..the who..kiss..led zep and mike is still 1 of my favs..as for neil young..well i wouldnt call him original
Someone once told me, "Nickulback rox cuz they sound like a better version of Pearl Jam.". I told him, "Shut your damn mouth with such disrespect, Eddie Vedder has more songwriting talent and singing ability in a pubic hair than Chad Choader will ever have!"
I don't know why I have to mention this, but Eddie looks like he just got out of bed. And you know, that just adds to the whole thing that makes Pearl Jam, Pearl Jam. He's got this whole 'don't care' thing with his whole persona and then he gives you THIS--the music!!! It's like Eddie and all the rest of them put it ALL into the music. Going to their shows IS a RELIGIOUS experience!!! If you haven't gone to see them live, then GO NOW!!!
I think Neil Young originally played lead guitar for this song? Did he also play the kick-butt solo at the end?? Anyways, one of my favorite PJ songs!
hey...where did my comment go? I was saying that... not sure why this song holds such magic for me but I first heard it in 1996 and have been listening to it since!
No, it was released on a mini-EP called 'Merkinball'. It features Neil Young on guitar, though. The EP is considered an official companion to Youngs 'Mirrorball'. Lyrics and music for this one and Long Road were all done by Pearl Jam.
neil does however play guitar on the studio version of this, look in the credits. but still, eddie composed the main riff and progression, and neil just does the solo at the end.
It is written by Eddie i believe but was recorded on Merkinball with Neil on guitar. So it wasn't really a Neil song, just recorded during the mirrorball sessions.

It's not really a Neil Young song...yeah, but it just doesn't sound close to as good as it does live. You just can't replicate Young's unique style and tone...
it is my fav too...a lot of "real fan" think the same way with this song! maybe is becouse we think this is the fav song for eddie too...the first time I listened this song I cried and I heard 100 times! my favo since I had 14 years, know I had 28 and I think the same thing
It's actually "I walked in light....when you held me in that night". I only know this because I've seen the actual paper that he penned the lyrics on. The song is sung from the vantage point of an obsessed, reclusive fan. You get a sense of this from the line: "If once I could feel loved....oh stare back at me yeah yeah yeah" It's definitely about someone with some serious reality issues.
hes actually sayin "i walked the line wehen you held me in that night" and then later on "i paid the price never held you in real life" so that night was either a dream or some kind of fantasy, but thats just my guess
Rock on Pearl Jam...whats really good about Youtube....ever since the year 2005, great live rock concerts can now be played at anytime so you can relive your memorys of these great bands before they break up and go away...:) keep on rocking Pearl Jam
May God bless you. I don't understand how people can listen to little penis Wayne especially when his music has little to no actual message (except that he's the greatest and much better than you will ever be). Hip hop has mostly gone to shit. What happened to gangster rap. Pretty much only Kanye West is doing some good things, and that is what i call New Wave rap. Grunge is dead, as well. just a little message to shane31lv and a lot of other guys out there, eddie looks fu@£$ yummi!!! you see, it is possible to LOVE pearl jams music AND eddie for being a sexy guy. some writes that eddie doesnt like this fixation on him... well, sorry eddie:) i think he probably forgive us girls:)
I agree, Eddie isn't the totality of Pearl Jam - he'd say the same himself I think, but that's the only band I've seen in concert where EVERYONE sang EVERY LYRIC to EVERY SONG.
Compared to other bands, I don't think pride or arrogance is an issue for him.
I have to agree, the fixation on eddie doesnt even make sense anymore, hes not attractive really now, yes hes great but so is the rest of the fucking band.
Well he is an amazing frontman, and even average frontmen can steal the show. Ed has always been about putting the emphasis on the whole band though, not just him.
And also, I think he looks pretty good for a guy in his forties!
Man, he looks better now than ever! I'd take him in half a second, don't know what you're not seeing there, but he's still got it. They are all awesome, loved them for many years.
Amazing song...and it´s this one in a million more.!
Thank´s PJ I´m with you guys.Cheers.

Truly, Eddie is just an amazing talent. We are fortunate to have him around during our time here on Earth.

I'm straight and I dont question my sexuality, but I do love him as a man, as a human being, as some guy who makes me chill
* sorry my english!

The 90's had some of the most amazing music of my Gen(X)eration. I miss that time....

I've seen these guys live and I am suprised how much rhythm guitar Eddie Vedder plays. He is a pretty good player too!

You should hear some of his solo shows. You'd be surprised at just how good of a guitarist he is!

This is a great song that they did with Neil Young. This is an excellent live version from an awesome band.

just a little message to shane31lv and a lot of other guys out there, eddie looks fu@£$ yummi!!! you see, it is possible to LOVE pearl jams music AND eddie for being a sexy guy. some writes that eddie doesnt like this fixation on him... well, sorry eddie:) i think he probably forgive us girls:)

Honestly, best band someone can watch live.. Eddie remains fantastic.. As for the song one of the greatest of the band..

I have to agree, the fixation on eddie doesnt even make sense anymore, hes not attractive really now, yes hes great but so is the rest of the fucking band.
shane31lv 4 years ago
Well he is an amazing frontman, and even average frontmen can steal the show. Ed has always been about putting the emphasis on the whole band though, not just him.
And also, I think he looks pretty good for a guy in his forties!

Man, he looks better now than ever! I'd take him in half a second, don't know what you're not seeing there, but he's still got it. They are all awesome, loved them for many years.

fan-flippin-tastic. however, its a shame that the camera is trained on eddie 99% of the time. we missed some sick matt cameron fills..
