  • I do about 18 lbs of apples at a time, core and skin the apples and only use the apple flesh in the pot, and then cook it into apple sauce. Then I transfer to a crock pot for slow cooking over about 24 hours. For that batch I might use 2 or 3 cups of sugar MAX. I've been told I should open a store to sell it. I also lean towards tart apples like Granny Smith, but tend to mix 4 or 5 types of apples. Cinnamon, allspice, and ground cloves also.

  • Maybe it's due to the lighting, but it looks like you may have heated this batch a bit too long. I once made a batch that looked like that, and it resulted in some stomach issues. Don't worry though - this is a common mistake novices make when they start learning the process. (Just a little advise - Stay away from Granny Smith apples - most folks in the apple butter 'community' sware by that)

    Beware distributing this batch to friends, unless you don't really like them :) Happy Canning!
