He'll obviously never return to form from the Beatles days...but it's still fun to see him still try and still be creative.
Thing that stands out in this particular video for me is that he still has his voice. It seems like he lost that beautiful tenor that was his hallmark, somewhere in the 2000's--maybe it was all the touring in recent years. Hearing his more aged and grizzled voice while singing "Blackbird" loses some of the magic.
I think that some of the songs that he has recorded over the last 15 years are better than some of his Beatles songs. I prefer the songs I listed and songs like Somedays, Young Boy, From A Lover To A Friend, Calico Skies, Only Mama Knows and Vanilla Sky etc to songs like Maxwell's Silver Hammer, One After 909, Why Don't We Do It In The Road, Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da etc. I agree that his best now are not at the level of his best Beatles songs, but they are just as good as lots of Beatles songs.
what seems to happen....is they run out of great original melodies and lyircs and they start writing the same song over and over...he must have a bunch of soigs from his solo period...from albums and demos...that i have heard....that sound very similiar to this song...
the question then...is...why would he bother covering an awful poorly written tune like this?
i love paul..he is great...he is not a machine..even dylan admits he hears a song he wrote when he was 23 and cant believe it...admits he couldnt write a song like that now..but we are fortunate that paul is healthy and well and plays great concerts around the world...
i did like the song he wrote last year for the deniro film and i believed it should have won the academy award...
@ChiroQuacker I also think that he should have won the Oscar, I just feel that you are being harsh, when as you know, music is subjective. All My Trials is a very popular 50's folk song, I am sorry that you don't like it, Paul's version was a surprise minor hit.
As for Paul's current songwriting abilities, I, like many others, think that he is on his most consistent run of form since the early 70's. Listen to friends to go, fine line, riding to vanity fair etc. Hopefully you'll be surprised.
i liked friends to go.vanity fair, fine line, mrs bellamy, etc...
i buy all of his cd's...but not of it touches his beatles period..but thats ok...
i just bought paul simons new cd..its ok..but not one new song worthy of his 60's-70's writing
same with elton etc...
doesnt mean they should retire..i am happy they still write and record..i'll buy it...BUT...its not the caliber of their best work..an honest observation not mean spirited in any way...
first time i heard this song.....very good!

@ChiroQuacker I am afraid that you are wrong, McCartney did not write this song, this is a cover.
