haha, im japanese but i like root beer after several tries. At first I hate it as well but soon after I kinda get used to it. But Natto I am still hating it, so tasteless.
lol I've had natto here in the states... and I can't say I hate it... but I have heard it's WAAY better in Japan than here. I also heard freezing it really ruins the quality.
all the food and drink is expensive in japan, you kinda get used to it if you live there long enough. But when you get home you realise just how much you spent. I guess if your living and working there, its not a problem though as there isn't an alternative :).
it seems every country has some kind of thing that is an acquired taste.. over here it's salty liquorice, in japan it's natto, in australia it's vegemite. I've never actually had natto, so i wonder what it's like. A friend of mine liked it he said but i'm not sure if he actually had natto or just thought it was natto when it wasn't :P
I heard somewhere ( I think it was from one of Tokyocooney's blogs) that root beer flavoring is put into some medicine in Japan. This was why they dislike root beer.
Agreed. Root Beer is the best. I don't drink soda, but on the rare occasions when I do, that is my drink of choice. I know one Japanese person that likes RB. The A&W company tried to get into Japan, but their shops ended up being a disaster. Which I find funny since Japanese people drink all sorts of weird disgusting drinks. Shiso Pepsi, do I need to go any further with an example?
And I found monster size cans of Mountain Dew in a JR station vending machine only a few minutes from my house. They have the normal size cans too, but when both cost 120 yen, of course I get the huge one every time lol!
I was sad when it got banned from supermarkets in the UK... so what if a couple of kids go high on caffeine : )
You're lucky. Most of our vending machines are small Dydo or Boss owned ones and these never have it in. So when I showed it to the other teachers, most had never seen it before.
Only the huge ones (I've never looked to see by whom they are owned) found at main stations have it around here.
when our sister city students came to our city in california, they took them to a&w rootbeer and ironically, most of them liked it. At least my student did :)
I cried when the Japanese Dr. Pepper was smooshed T-T. Dr. Pepper is nummy! I have heard horror stories about Natto and it looks gooey and gross, but I WILL force myself to try it!
Just curious, where did you find Root Beer in Japan?? My friend mentioned to me that it tasted like medicine to her. HEHE. I love root beer! I did try natto, by itself wasn't the worst thing I've ever eaten, but I think I will have to eat it a lot more to get used to it. :)
Did you give them all A&W? If so, there's your problem. Barq's/Dad's Root Beer or bust. They taste identical, and thankfully not soapy like A&W and other unsavorty brands.
Regardless, I have heard the "root beer tastes like medicine!" line from just about every Japanese person I've met. Yeah? Well... green tea tastes like grass! Ha!
You know, I like nattou, but I don't like root beer either, haha. Then again, I don't like a whole lot of stuff that pleases most American taste buds, which include, but are not limited to: cheesecake, ham, gravy, lemon merengue pie, merachino cherries, etc. I'll only drink it in a root-beer float :D
While I like trying new things, natto is definitely something I'm a little skeptical about trying. I'll try it eventually, but it looks nasty, and most gaijin say it is nasty.
Wow, you werent kidding, i think that was the shortest vlog i have seen you do. Lol still loved it though. Im gonna have to try that out when i go to japan.
I've never had root beer as well. No idea how it tastes like! I've never seen it here. We probably sell it but you'd have to look for it in special shops or something.
I really miss the milk teas in Japan, you can't get anything like them in the US. I also really miss all the cheap iced coffees you could buy in cartons. Iced coffee is only sold in bottles or cans here, for ridiculous prices ($2+ for 12 ozs, but it's Starbucks) Meiji or some other Japanese company could make a killing in the US by selling cheap iced coffee and milk tea in the US.
Hahaha thanks for that update...sad to hear rootbeer is soo loathed but now I know what to compare Natto with. I agree howevere, Dr. Pepper is amazing...my favorite and I really hope I can get it somewhere over there!
I'm not too fond of rootbeer, too. And I don't like Nattô too much either. Septic soybeans, you could say... It tastes like... like a very mature Camembert (a soft French cheese), which I happen to like, but Nattô lacks a deepness, a certain quality, in taste that the cheese provides.
I brought such a cheese to Japan, which is actually forbidden because it wasn't shrink-wrapped, but maybe the customs officer thought that my body gave off that smell and did not search the luggage. :-)
I had no idea that Japanese people don't like root beer. At least it looks like soda though. Natto is disgusting. It looks like runny poop stuck to slimy spider webs. It's terrible. It was in school lunch once and half the class gave their natto to the other half of the class cause they couldn't stand it either. I couldn't even look while they ate it.
I loved root beer even the first time I tried it in the U.S. I miss it. I can't find them here...And Coke in the U.S taste totally different from Coke in Japan. To me Japanese Coke is too sweet.
I laughed so hard when I saw the title of this. The first time I gave my wife (nihonjin) a can of root beer from the import store, she almost spit it out saying it tasted like medicine. I was shocked, how could anyone not like root beer. I wasn't aware that most Japanese people didn't like it though.
despite the fact that I lived in America for 17 years, I've always hated cherry coke and dr. pepper no matter how many times I tried it. Root beer on the other hand, it took me 16 years before I was able to get used to it. Natto I have always loved no matter what lol.
It's a wonder how many great systems foreign countries have for recycling. Why the US refuses to actually act and join in these sorts of endeavors will always remain a mystery.
I live in Dallas and we have a huge blue garbage can on wheels for our recylcing. It is picked up every other week. I'm sure there are similar programs in many US cities. :-)
hahaha that's crazy! By the way, Root Beer and Dr. Pepper are my favorite, too. Spreckers Root Beer is the best.

Root beer Varies. A&W is pretty soft and creamy. Barqs tends to have more of that kind of licorice flavor.
