  • thats not gone well!

  • just curious, how tall are u

  • @SippinCoffee1 6'0"

  • Also, we are discussing this video on miata.net now.

  • Is your back ok now? Have you gone back out on the track? Sorry, I tried reading all your posts but couldn't find why you think it oversteered so much? Did you hit curbing or were the tires getting too hot/sloppy?

    thanks

  • @bocon007 I have a compressed disk. I've been back on track several times since then and I plan on getting fully back into racing over the next few years. There's a pretty good dip right next to the curb there and it just tossed the rear end around. I think I was a little hot coming into the corner too.

  • @bedheadben I hope your back gets sorted out and i'm glad you went back out on the track. The first time out must have been weird.

  • Glad you were ok. Sorry about Miata.

  • This video scares the hell out of me... I've lost control of my miata before. This just makes me realize how dangerous it is!

  • Damn your top just disapeared

  • I saw a CD flying around while you were rolling at 1:19... Where was that hidden? Glad you weren't badly injured in that crash. What a bummer...

  • @CJinSeattle It came out of the CD player haha. Thanks!

  • That's amazing. Glad you made it that looked nasty. I'll be investing in a roll bar very soon!

  • @mcl311 Sooner rather than later!

  • Damn...I'm glad you're okay! How was your neck after the accident?

    -B

  • @blown383 Thanks! My neck wasn't so bad, it was mostly my back. I still have back problems to this day because of the accident.

  • Scares the shit out of me... I've had that same thing happen to me driving down the highway, a little fish tail..... if it went out as badly as yours did.... I could have flipped and died..... I need to get a roll bar.... I see they cost 200-600 bucks... but what about installation? Do they have to be welded or could I do it from home? Driving an NB 1999 miata.

  • @ChilisDonationBand I have installed many a roll bar and cage in my backyard. I just toss the bolts they come with and pick up some grade 10 hardware and use larger backing plates if possible. This roll was done with the Hard Dog with only the nuts and bolts it came with and it held up great. No welder needed if it's a quality bar. Don't waste your time with those roll hoops, get a full 6 point roll bar at least.

  • @bedheadben I've got an NB too - They're seriously important and have the added benefit of noticeably stiffening the chassis. The good ones are ~$400 (the $200 one isn't a roll bar at all) and you can install it yourself with a buddy in a handfull of hours. The key is getting one that fits you - Not a lot of space in Miatas so making sure you have enough recline OR height requires a bit of research. Do it!

  • @ChilisDonationBand do a weld on one if u can, much better, cost will be around 700 complete installation if u r in CA

  • Damn dude, glad you made it out in one piece.

I just want to know one thing though...where can I get one of those adamantium camera mounts???

  • @NA8Clubman It's just a normal GoPro roll bar mount!

  • Lucky you didn't break your thumbs! Don't wrap them around the wheel, at least on the track.

  • Geeeze! Thank goodness you're alright

  • Could you recommend a rollbar for an NA 1992 Eunos Roadster?

Also is it very likely that you'll roll the car doing general town driving?

  • @trikstadude3 Hard Dog is a good place to start. I don't think it's too likely that you will roll the car during every day driving unless if you are driving aggressively.

  • Wow, glad you're okay and that your safety gear did it's job! I just realized this is exactly where I spun a few months ago. I didn't even hit the bump there, just came out from underneath me. I guess I didn't realize how easily I could have rolled there. /watch?v=g1A1q4pM0eo

  • glad you were ok man

  • gooooooood shit bro. not the flip, but ur hardware.

  • damn, im literally going to go buy a roll bar now after watching this. im not joking.

  • Oh that makes me cringe seeing that. Sorry about what happened. I agree completely with TopElement. The people who run that trach owe you a new car. HardDog saves many many lives. Who gets off by saying "convertibles don't belong at the track"? Lmao, must be a numbnuts who has never seen a v8 miata. you know why he hasn't seen a v8 miata? They are so fast you cant really figure out it was a miata that just passed you in your "suped-up" mustang. ah haha. No really,...its the #1 selling sports car

  • @HardenedShield Thanks, you hit the nail on the head!

  • did your head smack the roll bar at any moment? It looks like it did, but I cant tell...

  • Oh wow! That reminded me of wrecking my motorcycle at the track, except that I separated from the bike. Good to hear you are ok

  • Hate to see anyone crash due to a broken wheel, but I knew something looked odd in the vid. There's not a bump at the outside of that corner big enough to upset the car as bad as yours was upset.

  • I am getting into miata's and I plan on doing the Miata challenge. I was wondering what roll bar? I'm moving away from the e36 m3, because I feel that a miata will teach me much more for less money.

  • @ajkoolo That would be the Hard Dog Hardcore Cross Braced. Good choice going with the Miata!

  • Your one lucky dude. That's why I want a roll cage...

  • im sorry that this happened but one thing i must say, convertibles dont belong at the track.

  • @FabrezeFRESH Well obviously you have never been to the track before and seen that the most common cars to race are Miatas. My car at the time of impact was safer than almost any car on the street would have been in that roll. I had a certified roll bar, racing seats, 5 point harnesses, a racing suit, gloves and a helmet. My current Miata has all the same except a full 6 point roll cage this time rather than just the roll bar.

  • Your blessed

  • @JDMthaH Thank you!

  • Oh my goodness.. glad to hear you're okay!

I hope that people who watch this video will realize the importance of good safety equipment. I mean I know some tracks don't even require a roll bar, but honestly, I think it's best to have one just cause.

I'm definitely going to install a roll bar before I do any performance mods to my car now. Thanks for sharing!

  • Have to say, that bar took it like a champ. I'm shopping them now and that one is now in the lead. You don't look short either so I presume a 6-footer like myself will be protected. Just looked at your photostream - Congrats on the new supercharger! Good to see you back with an MX dude. Cheers.

  • Have to say, that bar rocked. I'm shopping them now and that one is in the lead. You don't look short either so I presume a 6-footer fits. Just looked at your photostream - Congrats on the new supercharger! Good to see you back with an MX dude. Cheers.

  • you took that like a pro. sucks though, such a nice car...

  • ill take your seats :D

  • @neverend I had to junk both unfortunately. I'm not one to reuse safety equipment after it's been in a severe accident.

  • @bedheadben

You are the type of person I admire for thinking about the safety of others. Yes, good call on not selling or reusing the safety equipment. I hope you get back into another car you like. Be safe! Drive Hard! >:)

  • Dude u got your seats hella dirty! lol jk glad to hear your ok i thought i was gonna see your head fly off!

  • Dude you have some pretty sick pics from Portland. And, ARE YOU OKAY??? Holy jesus mother of mazda, you near got your head ripped off.

    Feel Better,

Your Cousin Miata over at Laguna Seca

  • @newbuddy321 Thanks! I'm doing alright these days haha

  • Wow, pretty brutal stuff. Looks like you got thrown around a bit. How was your neck afterwards?

  • @blockheadface It was sore for a while but eventually got better, my back is what's killing me.

  • Thats a bummer man, it would have been best to just go with the spin. When something happens that fast i dont blame you for trying to correct. Glad it didnt kill ya.

  • Rolled my mazda MSP there back in june, same turn and everything, except i'm told i rolled 6 times. Luckily me and my passenger walked away mostly unharmed, though i think i fucked my back and hip up a bit. How fast were you going when this happened? I was at like 90 ish.

  • @shredninja That's tough. I was doing 115mph when this happened.

  • So crappy/bumpy apex cause the lost of control?

    What caused the flip?

I see you got urself another miata lol. kudos to u

I got a 97 as well, i went to thunderhill a few times, mostly autox now.

Also what seat were you running? look like the sprint or speed

ps: i found your link on miata.net

  • @hkboyinca Pretty much it was the dip ya. The flip was caused by the rim snapping in the mud that was immediately off track. The seats are Sparco Sprint V's.

  • yikes! seeing you head kinda flop like that scars me. glad you are ok tho!

  • Would you mind putting a link to the pictures from this wreck in the description? I reference this video whenever someone asks why they need a roll bar to go on track.

    Thanks! Glad you walked off.

  • @UncleHumjaba Done. Thanks for the good idea, the pictures should be extra incentive for those asking why they need a roll bar.

  • Glad you're okay dude. Seriously it's scary as shit being in an accident, but you had the right gear.

I just bought a 2004 MSM. On one of the mods I was going to do is a rollbar. But I lucked out, it already had a hard dog installed.

    Anyways.. glad you walked away.

  • good job keeping your hands on the wheel man bravo, most people would of let go with that violent roll over.

  • @esjscarface408 Thanks!

  • ooooohhh snaaaaap... O_O thats freakin awesome XDD

  • By the looks of the tire marks, looks like someone took the same path you did??

  • @fcukhollywood Yup I think it was an Evo but they went off relatively straight and the car left unscathed after it got digged out of the mud.

  • I have years of exp at BW in all configs. Sounds like "weapon" guy nailed it. Watch the steering wheel just before car oversteers. That bump looks like he hit the apex curb too hard, which means poor set up out of Riverside. Only inexperienced idiots commit to, "in a spin, both feet in." It's a stupid idea that makes you only a passenger when you lose it. A real driver will KEEP DRIVING THE CAR UNTIL THE CAR STOPS. If your brakes are locked, you can't steer! Use your mirrors and drive out of it.

  • was the cage welded or bolted in this crash?

  • @newbuddy321 Bolted in.

  • @bedheadben That's what I would have guessed seeing how it ripped off. I hope you didn't get hurt too badly; that looked like it really tossed you around. It doesn't look like you had a hans device or 6-point harness either. I bet you will next time haha. My buddy totaled his miata a few months ago, so I can sympathize.

  • @newbuddy321 The roll bar didn't rip off, that was the hard top... I would be dead right now if my roll bar ripped out. It was a Hard Dog and it didn't even have a single dent or bend. I had a 5 point harness but no neck restraint. That roll was from 115 mph.

  • Wow, I was JUST at Buttonwillow and I'm glad I didn't see this before I went. Do you at least have any theories as to what happened? Something on the track? Tire blowout?

  • @jeremydgreat I'd say something on the track/change of surface as ive seen other cars go off at this exact same place before.

  • That bump is tricky!!!

  • Damn man, glad to see you got out it safe. Props

  • damn that hardtop was instantly gone... glad i have a roll bar to go with mine lol glad ur ok man.

  • Looks like you found a couple bumps in the road around the apex. certainly no mistake of your own. Nothing you could've done to save it I don't think. Even if you corrected it I think it would have spun out to the right.

Real shame to see it happen, nothing you could have done to save it though unfortunately.

  • wow, your calm as hell after the flip, its seem like nothing happen.. well glad your ok

  • How the heck did u just sit there for like 20 seconds after the flip with out speaking a word. hahah i would of been cursing up a storm.

  • how was ur neck after that? looks like you would be pretty damn sore for a while..

  • i have been in one of theses, and its true what they say, you see everything in slo-mo and then BOOM!

  • :( damn

  • that was fucking insane!!! how come when a car rolls the engine always turns off? i noticed that in a lot of videos. acutally all videos.

  • @marty1091 Probably because the engine recognizes the oil pressure raising significantly, and has an auto-shut off feature, OR the force alone from the roll over damages some electrical parts inside the engine bay, thus causing it to shut off OR the force of the impact alone causes the timing to instantly be thrown off.

My friend rolled his truck at low speeds, and the engine was still running when it was upside down. He cut it off immediately, though. I'm assuming it depends on the vehicle

  • @marty1091 as well as other forces involved.

  • Damn, were you ok?

  • Skip to 1:10 to see the flip.

That sucks about the about your car but wow that footage is amazing. Very intense. I've got a miata at home it's great car.

  • you have bigger balls than me racing a convertible lol. glad you made it out ok, kick ass vid

  • Ouch, man. Glad to see you're okay, that was a nasty roll.

  • What caused the car to lose it? It seemed like you had good control of the car.

  • @kdmr22 Good question.

  • @kdmr22 got on the power too quick?

  • @dgross217 i think he went over grass as he turned in. slippery stuff.

  • @ilovedelicousflavor You are commenting on my lack of control and reaction time? Do you have a vid of YOU at the track? Please hold your negative comments unless you do.

  • Don't you just love all the comments from people who think they know everything, and most likely they've never touched a tire on the track?

I want a spec Miata so bad! But for now i'll stick with racing motorcycles.

    Glad you're okay!!

  • @budcola678 Yup, people sure seem to act like they know everything. Thanks!

  • Ouch.

  • aaa su puuuut!!!!!

  • It seems like the main contributor to this accident was the poor maintenance of the track. Like many other low budget tracks, they don't take good care of run-off area or the transition off the sides of the track.

Not only is the track usually higher than the dirt on the sides, the bumps and ruts really are to blame for accidents that would otherwise be nothing more than a spin.

  • @TopElement

Holy shit does somebody on youtube ACTUALLY know what they're talking about?!?!?!

DID HE JUST DIVIDE BY ZERO?! SOMEBODY HELP ME THE FUCK OUT

  • what mods you got in that beast? ^^

  • @bboy4050 Mostly just intake, custom exhaust, Koni Yellows, 10k springs front, 6k springs rear, Spec Miata Koyo Radiator, R Spec Lip, Spec Miata Team Dynamics and 205/50/15 Kuhmo XS. Along with a bunch of other less major mods.

  • Wow that was brutal. This is why I will never track a car without a roof/rollbar. Shame about the car, it looked nice from this angle, lovin the interior. But at least ya made it huh!

  • I got a triumph Spitfire with a roll bar and after seeing this I know my MX-5 needs one. Glad your OK.

  • glad you made it out okay . what was the initial cause of the spin? did you hit that burm on the left side?

when you say both feet in. do you mean clutch and brake?

  • I see what the problem is now. You're too low through riverside, causing you to track out too far to the left, forcing you to late apex the kink. That's a bad spot for a late apex. The increased steering input angle from the smaller arc, plus the bump unsettling the suspension, caused the car to spin. Normally, if the car is loaded on the right side with less steering angle and a smoother arc, the car is much less likely to get upset from the dip at the apex.

  • Things happen so fast you don't get a chance to do much. He was at the mercy of the track and the car. Roll cages are the best way to prevent injuries...he is damn lucky, a inch here or there and he could have been in a wheelchair for life. Glad to see he was OK. Think about how much protection you have when you do a "Track Day" and drive accordingly.

  • AWESOME camera mount!

  • @LogicRising Thanks! I can't believe it stayed on in the crash!

  • @rezalini

ASS HAT!!! You're a Fucking idiot!!

Ben glad to see you made it out ok. A friend of mine told me if you're going to lose it just push in on the clutch and brake at the same time and more times than not you'll do a 180.

  • @bajacore Thank you! That is a good tip I was told the same by a few of my trusted friends that if I had gone both feet in I could have saved it and I believe it.

  • I bet a full rollcage seemed like a good idea after you smacked your head on the ground a couple times. Good thing youre ok and that you werent rolling on the tarmac..

  • Good show keeping your hands on the wheel. I saw a guy @ Summit Point lose an arm in a similar accident. He flailed his arms and it was crushed under the car. Nasty!

  • @bmberkheimer Thanks!

  • i know its hard to think fast enough sometimes but he shoulda turned the wheel the other way. the dirt grabbed the tire right as he turned the wheel left, bad timing, and driver input to blame

  • Did you see which way the steering wheel even spun? I was counter-steering. I was at full right lock when the first wheel hit the dirt, but you keep thinking that.

  • look, you froze up. simple. glad you are ok.

  • you have fully convinced me to get sum form of bar/cage, that was rather quick how it happend, that slight jolt on the last left hander just lost your traction and then that dip on the strait was your demise, really glad your ok dude....cages are a must

  • @rong9tagger I'm glad I can inspire you to buy more safety gear!

  • You sir have lived through the biggest fear most of us who are crazy enough to enjoy this sport have. So glad you made it out of there alive. Looks like you neck took a pretty good beating though. You planning on a H&N restraint?

  • @68ray Unfortunately I gotta stay out of it for a little while but when I come back I will be looking to get a HANS.

  • smaller steering wheel and a faster rack = car saved!

i also am a SCCA road racer who drives a miata. his car instantly flips as soon as he leaves the pavement. nothing really he could have done after he left the concrete.

ive went off sideways into the soft sand at roebling road, but quickly got it straightened out. roebling has seen many miatas roll out there

  • @dakar318 Thank you! I do believe a faster rack would have saved me but the wheel is a 350 and i dont think a 330 would make much of a difference.

  • i just watched it again, it looks like he hit a bump going into or out of a corner,

  • @Skullzaflare I hit a small dip mid corner in that left kink.

  • In A Spin: Both Feet In. About the best you're going to do given how quick this stuff happens.

Cage is a good idea unless you also drive it on the street, then a bar is appropriate and it looks like it did it's job (you were able to post the video)

  • @thefirebuilds Thank you!

  • what HD camera was this?

  • @rev2redcom GoPro HD

  • Comment removed

  • no roof to hit your head on....good idea, lol

  • to hell with a roll bar, where is the damn roll cage? i would NEVER race without a full cage, am i am a licensed scca driver!

  • scary stuff,, whats seats are those?

  • damn drop top silver supersport SL lol... almost looks as if he hit his head on the first roll, maybe it's just me......

  • fuck dude...that shit was crazy!

  • Roll bars, roll bars, roll bars!!! glad to see the driver made it without serious injuries like having an arm ripped off or something bad.

    Good video!

  • now thats what you call a Drop top!! lol i bet that was a adrenaline rush..

  • Dude, Ben, I don't know you but I'm totally glad you're okay. That was seriously hairy. Thank god for proper roll bars. Looked suspiciously like a broken rim sent you over...

I've been driving MX5s for ages (track too). It's important for guys like me to be reminded by stuff like this. I'm just sorry you had to go through that for our little lesson, y'know? Peace.

  • sick!

  • seems like someone spinned there before you. I can see the tire marks. Hell, this looks bad. It looks SO bad I think I need a rollbar. What camera did you use? It did a great job. I hope you don't lose your love for miatas.

  • Oh, man, look at all that mud in your car!

  • Holy crap, ben! Thank god you're ok dood. I'm confused now... Did your rollbar snap or is it good2go?

Sorry to see this happen, I'm using this video to advocate safety measures for miata drivers if you don't mind =D.

Hope to get back in the saddle soon man.

  • The roll bar is perfect! Feel free to use it to advocate safety!

  • + you can see it in the rear view mirror. Glad you are ok man, this is scary and should be a remainder for all the noobs (like me) out there to take it easy on the track.

  • Where is the roll cage? It's a soft top car, shoulda been one of the first mods on that thing before hitting up a track...

  • The camera's mounted to it...

  • No... You can't even see it on the lining of the roof which means it's probably just a harness bar thing. Plus how in the world would it crush that much.

  • Ouch,

  • Holy shit dude... That was a bit scary! At first I thought you lost your head!!! Hope you're up and running in no time!!

  • Out of Riverside I saw a correction in the wheel at transition. Major oversteer at 5. Did you heat up your tires or was this your fist green lap? You pinched down the apex at a time when less throttle and little unwind would have gotten you up to the MM braking zone cleanly. IMO. Warm up in February at BW takes a few laps to get heat in the brakes and tires.....Hope to see you back in action soon. Please invest in yourself and hire a coach or spend more time with instructors

  • Comment removed

  • correction out of riverside? You mean right before he clipped the curb that unsettled the car? Can you give me the time?

  • Wow.

  • Looks like the car could have really used some aero upgrades. It came loose really easy.

Glad the driver is ok and can go build another one for cheap.

  • It looks like the rollbar, helmet and harness all seemed to do their job. On another day where the ground wasn't soft perhaps you would have just spun into the grass. It is unfortunate that the car dug in as your drifted off track, but glad you're alright.

  • I like the fact that at 1.27 you check that your head is still attached. Always worth doing.

  • so THAT'S what roll cages are for.

  • O_O

    i need a rollbar now.

  • holy crap hope your ok,some crash that

  • he`s so calm....

hey, watch 'captain planet' on my channel..thanks

  • Glad your OK, you must have felt that one the next morning.

  • Bravo for this one.
