Heavens to Murgatroid! What an absolutely adorable tribute, JeriLynn! I only recently became aware of Blossom, thanks to youtube. What a unique voice & talent! How sad that she passed away last year. KUDOS on a job well done, young lady! THANKS for sharing it with us! You've MADE my day & my weekend! :)
Thanks for that lovely tribute. My wife and I both fell in love with Blossom's singing in the 1960s when we saw her on UK TV - long before we had met. Imagine our joy when we were on holiday in New York in 2005 - wandered along West 46th Street - Restaurant Row - paused outside Danny's Starlight Room and saw that Blossom was performing that very evening! We rushed in and booked a table for what was the most magical evening of our lives - just us and 30 or 40 others and Blossom - FANTASTIC!
I saw Blossom the year before she died with my wife, she was great - a bit frail, we bought one of her cd's and she signed it - I told her that we love her music and singing and we'd listen to her on road trips, she looked a little perplexed...
I didn't realize at the time that she sang "figure 8" the great song from School House Rock - also featured in Noah baumbach's The Squid and the Whale....
I've been a Blossom Dearie ever since I was a kid (SHR). Didnt know that she had passed away until today. Funny enough, I've had both the CDs you flashed, in heavy rotation for the last 2 month. She was HIP! and so are you! ... p.s. GREAT VOICE! Let me know if you have an album, I'd be glad to buy it!
I'd love to have it, even if it were only a tape. She's so much better when she's singing with only her own accompaniment. Her phrases breathe and expand in a way they just can't otherwise--nuance, nuance, nuance--she's the master of it and there songs are the epitome of the sublime. The discography lists it as 1977 and doesn't rate it so high--I BEG to differ. I prefer it to all other Blossom recordings--it's a SHAME it has been neglected! A shame!
Don't know about that CD, but would love to get my hands on a double LP she made in the 70's that featured Dave Frishberg's gret protest song "Wheelers and Dealers"
wheelers and Dealers is on that particular CD/LP. She does it solo, as she does everything else on that recording. I have heard lots of Blossom recordings and performances, but my favorites are ALL just her accompanying herself. Playing with others causes loss of artistic freedom and nuance that makes Blossom's work truly stand out.
The name of that album is "Winchester at Apple Blossom Time"...it's available online, but at a hefty price...another great tune on this," A Jazz Musician" sounds like it's dedicated to her son, but there's no mention of her ever having a son.
Okay, here is some of the songs: Sunday Afternoon, If I were a Bell (just her, no accompaniment) the Shape of things, Sammy, Lucky to be me, Summer is Gone, A wonderful Guy, You are There, Love is an Elusive, you're for loving, a Jazz Musician. Some of her most sublime and intimate performing. Does anyone know where this can be gotten? Is it in CD?
It's heartening to see so many Blossom fans. I first learned about her in the 80s: The cure of hypertension! A great, great artist--and Miles Davis' favorite singer!
A friend has a great 33 1/3 recording of her doing wonderful songs. She sang and played alone, and that is how I've always preferred her performing. These songs were among the best and most poignant I've ever heard--but I can't find them ANYWHERE in any form. I'm running out of letters, but in the next post I'll list them.
Of all the BD songs! Blossom's Blues is my FAVORITE, but far. And her first album is also my favorite. Thanks heaps! I listened to her a lot while in the Peace Corps several years ago...
JLK- watched your tribute again and it's very- very good. Just saw the 3 comments by marcs789 and weren't they interesting- that's thanks to you.
I mentioned Sylvia Syms on another thread with you, wish I could post the better music I have in my collection, like others posted some of her music. Mine is better. will look into that. She was Sinatra's favorite singer.
Check out "Surry With the Fringe on Top" !!! It's on the Tube, and it's one of those gems of hers... she had this way of making you feel like everything was going to be alright...a really easy-going vibe that is almost healing.
I heard her sing Manhattan and I was sold. I couldn't believe how she could get so much emotion from her style. Miles Davis was also knocked out by her interpretation of Manhattan. I just heard her version of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly", and she's got Ron Carter playing bass. I'm about to mention her in my jazz history class!!
Thanks so much for the wonderful tribute (and the link collection!) I remember when Blossom Dearie was a guest on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz some time ago and enjoyed the show very much. And, much as I loved all of her Schoolhouse Rock vocals, my favorite recording is also a duo with Bob Dorough--their treatment of Rupert Holmes's 'Answering Machine' (with an extra verse at the end)
Again, thanks so much for the video and the links!
Blossom's best Schoolhouse Rock is Figure Eight, from Multiplication Rock, about a little girl skating, of course, figure 8s, on the ice. Many of those songs are by Bob Dorough, also a very hip guy (recorded with Miles) who does a nifty duet with her on Baby It's Cold Outside on one of her albums.
Though I knew she was a singer in NYC we really never discussed her singing career. A friend called me & told me of her passing. Her and I would sit around my yard w/ a drink and talk about everything except her career and music. She was a very private person and a lovely woman and you would never know how well known or famous she was in life. ....May she rest in peace...Marc C

I have known Blossom for about 20 years...she spent her weekends in East Durham which is her place of birth. Though I am about 45 years her junior I took quite a few nice walks w/ her and she spent quite a lot of her time sitting around w/ me because she was my next door neighbor. I saw Blossom on two occasions in London town. She was marvellous & absolutely unforgettable. I noticed she didn't like too much noise going on -
the cutlery & glasses were clinking quite loudly on one occasion & she just stopped dead & almost burst into tears & didn't resume until everyone there realised why she had stopped - but hey it was a jazz club! Will never forget that but I really really loved her. R.I.P.
I am one of Blossom's biggest fan, but she's definitely not someone you'd want to spend the day with. She was known to banish women with babies from her audiences and ditch out on dinner plans with perfectly respectable people. She was crazy! This makes me love her all the more though.
I just heard today that Blossom Dearie passed on February 7th. As I watched your tribute to her on YouTube, the tears rolled down my face. I love her music, and I am very sorry that she is gone. R.I.P., Blossom. Well done.
My wife and I saw Blossom Dearie in New York a few years ago. We were celebrating our 25th anniversary--and it was just days after 9/11. Her concert was one of the highlights of that trip. We still have the CD she autographed for us. (BTW, I first learned to like her music when I was an 8th grader, a lot of years ago.) I'm sad she's gone.
I was lucky enough to have Blossom all to myself when taking a break between sets at her last performance a few years ago. We shared a drink at the bar, and it is among the most thrilling moments of my life.
I just heard she passed :( I remember hearing her on the radio a few times in the early 70's. I thought what a neat voice she had! ..... I havent heard her in years but always remembered that voice.... and YOU sound just like her... Thank you...//*u*\\
Wonderful tribute - I hope more people start appreciating her individuality and innate musicality; it's sad that people are not as well known during their lifetime as afterwards. :( R.I.P. Ms. Blossom Dearie.
I'm the lucky owner of a wonderful album, Blossoming, recorded in 2006 by Marieve Herington in tribute to the legendary Blossom Dearie, her favorite singer. Marieve is a jazz singer with a great talent in many areas: she has a unique voice, so graceful and sophisticated! I suggest everyone who likes good music, in particular Blossom Dearie, to discover this young and lovely Canadian artist.
I discovered Blossom Dearie this past year and I adore her. I would love to see her play. I've been searching for dates with no success. I swear I would beg borrow and steal just to have the privilege of seeing her perform.
I agree with the previous posts. You certainly do a good job of channeling her. I'm thinking- Tribute Show. The question is can you play as well as she does?
I just found out who she was through a friend..what a voice I will be checking her out more and more..thank you for the quick education on her background...it is so hard to keep up with everyone
Well said!! I love, love, Love! Blossom Dearie. I am so with you on sitting next to her on the piano. But damn, if Blossom wasn't with us any more I would believe that you were the reincarnation of Blossom!! You sing beautifully.
Hi,Just to let everyone know please pray for Blossom Dearie,I saw her in Greenwich Village she looks like she will be leaving us soon on earth to be with God...
Excellent. I used to see her at the seafood restaurant in mid-town, when she would play in the back room. Amazing. You think she's one thing, but she keeps mutating before your ears.
