Nolons Joker was based off Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello. A phychopathic, schizophrenic man with zero empathy for anyone or himself. @shumey7 Yes, Ledgers/Nolans Joker is psychotic and dark, but i think you missed the whole point - Nicholsons Joker was aimed to be truer to the comic book Joker, and he does BRILLIANT work in this part, so yes, the old batman movies joker looked silly when compared to the new movies joker, but not because of bad directing or acting, just because they had different goals with the role.

If you compare the new movies to the comic books, Nolans joker is doing a terrible job - its all relative :)

You have to look at different comic books at well. Some of the ones which are much darker would compare more to Ledger's Joker than Nicholson's. For example, I'd much easier see Ledger's Joker reenacting The Killing Joke than Nicholson's. Not knocking Nicholson, he did a wonderful job in Batman, but in terms of overall acting, disregarding source material, I feel Ledger did a better job...

@BattleButlerJeeves While i see your point, i still think that Nicholson did a spot-on job for the character he was meant to portray, so its still not a fair comparison - you have to remember that trends and technology also dictate the acting and movie styles, Ledgers Joker would have probably been very poorly accepted 20 years ago, and in the same manner you can see how most old movies seem a bit silly to us today.

But you have to also understand, that it's mainly because of Heath Ledger that Joker is so excellent in this movie.

Just because Joker is like a God in this movie, it doesn't mean that Bane and Catwoman will be as good as well. And I honestly don't think they even will be. It was ledger's acting, that made Joker so memorable.

We just have to wait and see how they will be. :)
