The fraction between her vocal folds is the cause. However, her airy tone is not bad and indeed sounds rather pleasant to ears.

karaoke fans can't distinguish real notes from fake notes. Kelly's got it, she won first place in a live singing competition. Everybody knows she's really good live.
While Mariah is a terrible live, the quality of the voice sucks. She's good though at lip synching, she has mastered it that karaoke fans can't really tell that she is faking the belting.
