Forgiveness releases us from resentment and allows us to see those who have hurt us with clarity. We are then far better placed to critique our politicians and see the core issue with clarity. If we hold grudges we will often just sound hollow and just sounding off our grievance.
As for the atheist - well Dawkins has said it all and still fails to convince me. I wonder if he calls upon God at the moment of huge crisis - I know most of us do.

As God does not exist, and therefore no otherworldly realm for us to concern us with, there is no practical, 'radical' message in the real world that can be found within the Christian atonement myth.
