  • the OS uses the sugar desktop environment its kinda different...

  • has olpc considered changing the XO keyboard to plastic keys, since kids tend to tear the rubber membrane keys by picking at them?

  • wow i feel selfish

  • one laptop per child .... Education is very important for humanity....

es increible pensar k si cada ciudadano del mundo fuese propietario de una Laptop Xo no seria necesario utilixar internet para chatear

  • Wikipedia is the only thing they need access to on this thing :D

  • isnt netbook?

  • i need to know exactly how to go purchase it

  • Can you buy them to?

  • I'm afraid you can't at this time. There was a "give one get one program" but it ended in December.

  • @hockeyslapper you buy them they give one to kids somewhere else and you I havent seen its solar powered part yet

  • Excellent video!

  • Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing an initiative to introduce digital textbooks into schools. It will move Californias education system into the 21st century. But there is no mention in the CDTI about providing devices for reading the texts. Does it mean that students will need to have their own computers? Not every student has. Is the XO laptop cheap enough to give all students? What about a cooperation between OLPC and CDTI. Internet is a great treasure chest for learning!

  • Play is one of the most important way that children learn, so what if they play on their laptops? God forbid 3rd world children enjoy any of the pleasures available to wealthy children...

  • good stuff

  • How about one laptop Per HACKER. LOL

This seem like a good idea, but i bet they rather play games on it instead of learn.

  • It was a joke. and not all hackers are bad. Hacking applies to more than just hacking a bank account or some crap like that. So loosen up and take a joke. I think its great to help the kids, I just think eating is more important than learning, so i think if they want to give a hundred buck, it should be to the poor kids who are starving.

  • they are two kind of people in africa,

    the starve and the medium

the medium have food to eat but lack education,

i say laptop is more important as it feed the brain

  • children use the computer for play... Have you ever thought about, that children learn when they play? To use the computer is as important as learning how to read and write.

It is our task to show children, how they can use the internet for learning. Therefore is the OLPC educational the best vision to give children a chance to change their lifes.

  • Discover the first Online Schoolbook GOLD DUST. A combination of global learning, grand adventure and multimedia effects.

  • Shocked! I was shocked by the comments that spoke disparagingly of children using computers.

Information and education are two of the greatest social equalizers known.

By offering children and adults unlimited information and world class education, both of which are available via the Internet, we can save peoples' lives.

A laptop with an Internet connection given to the poor will be a life changing contribution for recipients.

  • books are better. they last longer and they can be more effectively shared. How old is your cell phone or laptop?

It has to be remembered that the web has information for all sorts of things that are not appropriate for children or could be detrimental to communities. Porn, scams, and information like how to destroy things with bombs or guns are also out there.

laptops for the community to share, would be better.

  • There is something called Parental Control. It's not a new concept.

  • @shanna9650 It's interesting you should say that. Take a look at some of the other videos on YouTube. They will explain to you that the whole idea of the XO is connectivity and communication with others. XO's together create a 'mesh' network, where you can see what applications others are using and can join in. The amount of multi-user applications is huge.

  • @Mentocthemindtaker Books exist as objects, rather than pieces of technology data relayers that become "outdated" nor do they rely on things generated by societies that do rely on electricity etc... Books with philosophy, geography, science reference books, that stuff is never outdated. It stays the same. There are books on building structures, planting crops, sewing, forging metal, food safety, lagoons (for water treatment), animal husbandry, etc.. Books are amazing.

  • @shanna9650 Are you serious? When I was going to school our history books contained nothing about the Vietnam War (conflict), the fight for civil rights, or the assassinations of Kennedy or Martn Luther King, Jr. Almost every reference book is outdated before it even hits the printing press. Take planting crops... The climates have changed, our soil has changed, the pests that threaten crops have changed... There are limitless changes that will take place in our lifetimes.

  • @jaylgarrison -- Did your teachers teach you about the library? computers change nothing with regard to content. Software is outdated before it reaches a user, and the internet is full of lies, and rather incomplete. Does a child in Ethopia need the specifics of late 20th century american history? Does this project teach use of computers or how to learn? Books, discussion, writing, analysis, has worked for thousands of years. It's low tech, and for many that's appropriate technology.

  • First feed them, and then give them a laptot (that certainly is not the only way of educating a child ..). This is a great lie disguised as charity, help, humanity, etc.

  • ¿Do you think that the problem 4 that children is access to food? The problem for them is the lack of education to prevent illnes and capacity of communication to the rest of the world.. the problem to represent their own reality inside. Give them education and when they grow up, they´ll find the SOLUTIONS THEY NEED... unless your "christian" soul prefers beggars... (sorry 4 my rudimentary english)

  • yep books are better.. dammit how about a libary? for the kids?

  • The laptops comes with education software and text books.

  • How many books would equal the amount of information on the internet I wonder? Even just the information relevant to these kids lives? Also kids are going to WANT to learn using a laptop over a book any day.

  • I will give a thousand books over a laptop! Books give children learning, and there are no dangers in them. This foundation needs more education themselves.

  • how much does it "cost" for a laptop And no colour comn :P

meh it still induces the kids into learning

  • around $200, the cost of production.

  • Books are cheaper! Not only in getting them to kids, but kids using them. Lets see, two hundred bucks times ten... enough to build a school for the kids. Enough to build a library.

  • i'm pretty sure all the books i've bought during my time as a student have cost more than a laptop. and i'm pretty sure i have access to much more information with a laptop than i had with those books.

  • Bingo.

  • You wouldn't know. Someone who has been on both sides of the track would. My generation and those before me, look at us! Look at those who have won Noble Peace awards, they did quite well with no internet. From being on both sides of the tracks, books have done much better then the internet. However that's only coming from me and I'm one of many who are from very low income family's.

  • that's true but keep in mind that the world has changed and demand new abilities, knowledges, etc.. maybe sounds like an utopia but its totally posible.i think this is a great idea.

  • I agree! that's what i have been saying.

  • OLPC, they need an education. For thousands of years, billions of humans lived comfortably with no education. The money from these laptops can build fields for the kids to grow their own food. Then they have food for the rest of their life. It can also build them a library, and we can all donate books (no money needed there!), and the kids can get an education from those. OLPC, please just shut down and learn how to really love and care.

  • For thousands of years people have built fields and grown their own food. Our world is changing rapidly and people everywhere need to work together to address our growing problems. That requires shared knowledge, communication, and yes, devoting time in each life to education.

And donating + shipping print books isn't free...

  • Neither is a laptop!

  • @srobulack You said it yourself, because the kids need education OLPC was founded! There is a significant amount of NGOs helping to feed the poor, but since education since to the be last thing in the list of priorities there are Nonprofits such as OLPC to help people educate themselves... what would it matter to have food and the rest of important stuff if you are not educated? Might as well die!

  • @srobulack

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." So take it from there, children are the future they need to educate themselves to create a sustainable way of living!

  • @srobulack Wow, just wow. Harsh criticism for an organisation that is truly doing something that they believe will bring about a big, lasting change to the world and in particular children from impoverished backgrounds.

So, to level such criticism, you must be in a position to do so. Please tell everyone on YouTube what it is that YOU do to help people in other parts of the world to learn, develop and grow?

Or do you in fact simply post ignorant opinions in the comments section on YouTube?

  • well, i hope the children wont get addicted too much with the internet stuff..

  • Charity starts at home and this is another attempt by goverments to take your eye of what is going on in the Educated Dmocaracy..what a joke..

  • What good is a laptop going to do without electricity? Has to be charged sometime.

  • umm..doesnt the video tells us that the laptop can be charged by using solar power?

  • i wish i had one i have been interested in programing sing i was 8 or 9 so that would be about four year

  • that's awesome, chosenone. you should write to one of the olpc mailing lists, there may be a user group near you. the user group in Houston is mainly 8-13 yr old children.

  • no i live in dominica

these things are never available in dominica

plus i already have a pc but that because my father got everyone else a laptop bacause a great offer

its also to expensive for m father

i babble about my life to much on the internet comment finished

    (also i meant since)

  • Look back on time. I'm 34 and I have one hell of a great education, I never had an internet to learn on! They are called books, and they are a hell of a lot cheaper and safer then a computer.

  • the real question is why do we help people around the world before we help anyone at home, i know plenty of kids in our country that have very little, but im betting they will never get one of these, its funny how we send so much help over seas but do very little to help our own people, not one person should receive one of these until there is not one hungry child left in our own country.

  • Actually, there are 17,000 in Birmingham Alabama, and several thousand in inner-city schools in NY

  • you forgot to include the figures on how many are in use overseas 17,000 sounds like a lot until you compare that with the amount not given to kids here....

  • *shrug* who bought the machines? OLPC gives machines to really poor countries. Other countries by them to give them out, like Peru. 3-4 groups in the USA have bought XO's. Are you suggesting that the USA shouldn't buy them?

  • yes very wierd! my country is the same... becaus the stupid things the goverment decide the poor become even more poor and the rich more rich. i think its every where the same, but that people need to go to a foodbank is sick,we give 2milljard or something and the gone and always on tv the make shows to get money year in year out ! and i never see results ! so the doomed just give up and think on your own people !

  • I help out at the YMCA as a volunteer and swim instructor. Likewise, with the Humane Society, though I don't teach the dogs to doggy-paddle. I bought 4 of these - 2 for "overseas" and 2 for here... then gave my 2nd unit to some kids in Brazil.

We HELP people because we can HELP people - no more explanation is needed.

  • how can i get one i dont have a laptop either!
