Superb - my hat is doffed! I used to get a bo}{ocking for holding my bow like that - when it felt so natural and balanced. Wish I could've shown my violin teacher this vid, and said, "there you are, what's wrong with THAT"!!! Shared and faved. :o)
Savage stuff! I remember seeing Mark Oates playing with Colin O' Donnell in the Cock n' Bull, I still have the CD! I think their version of Nancy Spain is better than Christie's, especially cos of Mark's gorgeous fiddle playing on the "with the birds" line.
Incredible. Quite enjoyable io the listener; but can you imagine folks trying to dance some set to that tempo? You'd beter have the defibrillator ready. Wow! Thanks for posting this.
the 1st rule is that your hand pisition of the bow wasn't right. The 2nd rule is the you finger whas straight at the start but your fingers had to be bended.
Why did you played the violin with that hand pos. on the bow?
Maybe he's more comfortable playing like that? I honestly know nothing of fiddles yet but it sounds perfect to me, can the way you hold the bow fuck up the sound at all?
@ooronkennedy i would have to disagree with that. you an coax more out of the violin if your hand is placed properllyon the bow. not sayin this guy isnt good of course, but he may be even better...although that could be my classical training talking
@Evongelo - I'm also a classically trained violinist. I've spoken with many irish fiddlers and they believe that this is a superior bow hold for the extensive use of double stops that is standard in irish music. I've also met numerous skilled classical players who will switch to this bow hold as soon as they begin irish fiddling.
I'm not saying I entirely agree (I'm also classically biased), but the bow hold can't be considered "wrong" or "improper", just different.
I can see your point, it's just you can't possibly get the full reach out of your bow with a hold like that. but perhaps it achieves other things which work best for Gaelic music. eh, what ever, to each his own
@DietTimboSlice i can totally see two druken guys getting into and then the whole bar while these four guys are on stage still playing lol. good comment

Pinch of snuff is a good song, too bad about the way he plays it. The music isn't about destroying the tune by speeding through it. You have to slow it down enough to savor it. or at least develop the tune.
Oh he can play slow and tuneful incredible as well. Check out on his part on Handasyd Williams' single "A Patented Trapping". All his own lines and absolutely brilliant!
Absolutely! Am I right in saying that Dave and Side Show Bob are the regular Band members, whilst they have 4 others who play at different times together? Dave is a fine guitar player and Steve is quite handly too. I remember one night they played such a fantastic tune it brought the whole of Sydney in! Good luck with the music and keep it rocking!
sometimes holding the bow more towards the middle allows for faster play because its less weight at the tip. so the player can alternate between strings even quicker
Quite a few old time and celtic fiddlers use a bow grip away from the frog. It does make some bowing techniques easier, but makes others more difficult. As with anything, it's a trade off.
Anyhow, that was some smokin' fiddle! Nicely done Mark!
Love Finn macCool. They're so cool and got it all goin' on! We need more like 'em in Aussie pubs everywhere. Love Love Love them. They are hot too!!! Gotta love the humour- you have to read their CDs. xxxxx
If I were a bettin' man, I would say Mark Oats 'neurons' have NOT been chemically altered. In other words they are most definetly firein' on all cylinders. Good on Ya Mate!
That is an AMPLIFIER!!! Geez, this is real, not fake. And who are you to say. I am a musician and I can tell it was real. Where the HELL are you to insult these players?
I guess I now have to put this into context. I recorded this gig. I am a personal friend - and colleague - of all in the band. I'm stunned anybody took "t4kne's" comment seriously. I thought he was comedic, actually. And don't worry mate, these boys give as good as they get.. !!
Nice, I've seen some viciously fast session versions of the "Pinch Of Snuff" but never this quick. Anyone know the name of the reel he plays at the start before going into the Pinch? I think I caught a whiff of "Reconciliation" around 3 minutes in as well...
google pinch of snuff and o to "the session" website... they have tons of tunes. I also really reccommend the portland fiddle collection, lots of good tunes in there.
I seen this guy fiddling in Santa ponsa in the shamrock bar!

where your hand is on the bow doesn't affect the sound at all, it's just for comfort.
