In spanish we do called them estado unidenses but is rarely used. Mexico in the other hand is called Estados Unidos Mexicanos and we used the term Mexicano. Hope you get my point...

For example, if someone was from Bolivia it would be wrong to say they were American. So although Cantinflas is from North America he is NOT American. :o)

This statement is utterly bizarre. There was absolutely nothing wrong in describing him as a famous Mexican comedian. He was famous. He was Mexican. He was a comedian. The notion that because Mexico is part of North America, it smacks of prejudice to describe someone as Mexican is utter nonsense. Perhaps he should have been described as a "famous Mexican comedian and actor" (the description sans "famous" at Wikipedia), but that's the only complaint that could be made here.
Yeah, I think we usually use American to mean from the US rather than North, South or Central America. And there's nothing offensive about calling someone a Mexican.

Americans. Brazil = Brazilian, Argentina = Argentinian, Mexico = Mexican, United states = United Statian :P

@joeriginal I will say is probably because it's easier to call them Americans; since the country is called US of America. No other country in america is called xx of America. In spanish we do called them estado unidenses but is rarely used. Mexico in the other hand is called Estados Unidos Mexicanos and we used the term Mexicano. Hope you get my point...

@schusterlehrling Depends upon your frame of reference. There is a North America, Central America and South America. But to ask if someone is "American" usually means are they from the United States. For example, if someone was from Bolivia it would be wrong to say they were American. So although Cantinflas is from North America he is NOT American. :o)

The mistake here is to call "American" and adjudge the "membership" to only one country, that indeed is popular, but not because of this the only one in the whole continent.
i think the problem with all this is that U.S. never worked on a correct gentilic due the way they've settled as a Country.

@SirLinkoln Well, the person from Bolivia in my example and the person from Ukraine in your example would not want to be called nor even self-identify as an American or European, but rather a Bolivian and a Ukrainian. The United States is the only country that has ever been linked to the title American. At no time in history was a Mexican or a Bolivian or a Costa Rican known as an American. Why so? It's an accident of history coming from early map-makers who called the New World "America."

@kev619 Les dio envidia a E.U. y sacaron el $ de Mexico que usaban para hacer pelis. Si te fijas hay muchas peliculas de antes que se ven mucho mejor que las de los 80's y 90's, como que si en estos tiempos usaron camaras baratas, y para colmo peliculas tontas. Y las de hoy solo se tratan de drogas, sexo y malas palabras, si ya sabemos que se escucha fregon hablar asi y muy cool con las drogas bla bla, como si no pudiera haber mejores historias que eso. Una que otra buena pero nos falta mucho

I was born and raised in Miami (Colombian descent) and would watch ALL of Cantinflas' work as well as Tin Tan.

This statement is utterly bizarre. There was absolutely nothing wrong in describing him as a famous Mexican comedian. He was famous. He was Mexican. He was a comedian. The notion that because Mexico is part of North America, it smacks of prejudice to describe someone as Mexican is utter nonsense. Perhaps he should have been described as a "famous Mexican comedian and actor" (the description sans "famous" at Wikipedia), but that's the only complaint that could be made here.

Yeah, I think we usually use American to mean from the US rather than North, South or Central America. And there's nothing offensive about calling someone a Mexican.
