  • This method reminds me a lot of the Vietnamese "phin" style. Great stuff.

  • to be honest, i was totally surprised to see this video being done correctly (in bombay/delhi/etc no one knows how to make filter kaapi like the ones that are there in chennai) awesome sauce!!!: :-D hats off...

  • Bru eh... I get my coffee from a village in tamilnadu... :-D And we roast it at home, grind and add chicory. (trying to make you jealous :-P )

  • @KofykatKashyap : ...it's working.... ;)

  • I see. By 'concentrated' you mean thick and not in caffeine, right because the water won't stay hot for longer period and also there is no atmostpheric pressure involved here.

  • please do post a normal tea and masal tea recipe... its a combined request from all roomies cheers :) :)

  • @sonia102d : will put that on our list :) Thanks for your feedback!

  • we loved this filter coffee.. i tried it.. it came out same as moms coffee :) thankyou :)

could you put up the tea recipe coz these few things r very basic.. but very much needed to be made well :)

  • good pair

  • Those teapot-style filters are awesome. where can I find one? I always singe my hands with the more traditional style filter.

  • Thank you so much !!! I learnt so many good stuff from your videos till now:)

  • I am looking for a good coffee maker in the US to make south indian coffee.. Which is the best to buy? Pls advice...

  • i love drinking filtered coffee in early morning 6 am, with the cool breeze ,..it really makes the day..

  • Thank You so much for this video.... i have been looking for it for a lonnnnnnnnnng time!!!!

  • Ahh i was lookin everywhere fr dis ;-) thx

  • You're soo much fun to watch, great video!

  • But how do you wake up and have some if it takes 2 hours to drip? Do you make it the night before?

  • @pyronc

The drip time really depends on the size of your pot and the size of the filter. Small ones will go faster.

  • @ShowMeTheCurry The Indian decoction/espresso maker is a highly inefficient apparatus because it takes hours to make the espresso. The same volume of decoction/espresso can be made with ground/roasted coffee powder WITH IN MINUTES with this western decoction/espresso maker, which is supposed to be used over the stove and its not an expensive electrical contraption. Its called STOVETOP ESPRESSO MAKER. You can google it or use to same term here in youtube to find out.

  • @DrAlchemist0

5 tablespoons of grounds to 1/2 cup of water for coffee for two people.... hmmm.... that is a good point... Will we get a better % extraction or more cups out of the Bru packet by using an espresso maker (either stovetop or machine style)? .... or only time difference?

  • @rupendhar : The time is the only advantage if using an espresso machine :) and price of that machine is the biggest disadvantage :(

You can add additional water but the coffee will be diluted but it is what it is. Coffee is had in small amounts in South India, it is served in small tumblers and a bowl, transfer some coffee from the tumbler to the bowl, allow it to cool down so you don't burn your mouth and then drink it. :)

  • @ShowMeTheCurry Thanks for the reply and clarification. Looking forward to new tea / masala tea episode. Cheers.

  • @pyronc you set it to drip the night before. When you wake up just add the coffee syrup to the desired amount of milk and sugar, and heat it :)

  • @pyronc at my place we usually leave it on overnight so the coffee gets really strong.

  • By the way I TOTALLY love the new introductory music! What is the name of the piece? And, not so incidentally, I absolutely LOVE your videos - very entertaining and even more informative!

  • @WhtRabbit76

Thank you so much! The music is self composed :).

  • You should totally make a video on how to make an indian traditional milk and tea!!!

  • @SeaHearts1

Already did :)...Look for Ginger Cardamom Tea

  • @ShowMeTheCurry

Is it the traditional Karak Tea? :)

  • @SeaHearts1

It all depends on how long you steep the tea leaves...the longer you steep, the more "karak" it is.

  • Anuja and Hetal thank you so much, in particular for this recipe! You have no idea how desperately I was hunting to learn the correct process of making south Indian filter coffee!!!!!!! I love your recipes and the way you host!!!!

Would you please tell where can I buy the tea pot you have used in the

demostration - I would sincerely appreciate your help!!! Thank you!

  • @test07071310

We purchased ours from India but they are available in some of the larger Indian grocery stores that sell pots/pans etc and also online.

  • where I'm from (midwest USA) we call this trucker coffee... o.O not trying to be insulting but any coffee liquid that thick is just strange. I make my coffee in a french press, quick, easy, and tasty. I also don't drink that much coffee anymore either.

  • @faylinameir Why would you want to compare this to trucker coffee?

This is a decoction. Infact the coffee they made, if you chill it just the way it is, it will taste great that way too.

  • i live in australia, can i just ask u what coffee grounds is

  • @neil2090

It is just coffee beans that are ground finely.

  • A few hours later?! I don't know if I can wait that long for coffee, but it is intriguing. Very nice demonstration ladies! Thank you!!

  • We make coffee the same way in Peru. Thanks for the video!

  • I am SO glad you did this video. I have said to my husband in the Indian restaurant we go to "Why does i take so long to make a cup of coffee?" but it's soooooooooo good. I can never get it just right at home.....now I know why! Thanks very much.

  • aww..u made my day ....i love u gurls, infact my mom whoz 60 loves both too she says ' these gurls are fast n quick with cooking just the need for lazy bones like you'

  • what if you dont have the coffee pots

  • I'm not into south indian either Anuja! I like my tea :-)

  • Girls, you have no idea how helpful this video is. I have literally searched this so many times never to get a proper step by step explanation. While there are a couple good videos i did find, none used the filter. Yes its basic but thats whats easy to screw up too. Also aeration is an important step and very easy to learn. It does not have to be as dramatic as the chaiwalas but very crucial in flavor enhancement.

On a separate note, Anuja, you are looking exceptionally hot today.

    Thank You.

  • I think it would be really fun to see you guys try to aerate the coffee the traditional way .... even if you guys mess up. :D

  • Community sells coffee with Chicory. Coffee with Chicory is very common in Louisiana.

  • :) I'll try it

  • Looks yummy :)

  • Love ur videos!!
