Bernard Hermann was definately great, what a talent!
But, hey, does anybody know if he composed sweet, soft music either? I mean something like "Scene D'Amour" from Vertigo. It is sweet, although a bit dark.
I'm looking for sweet music composed by him and would really appreciate if someone helped me on this...
no word of a freaking lie there's this crazy girl in my school (she is really crazy not just saying that) in music today this was playing as the like stabbing music she walked into the class Oo
unforgettable. legendary soundtrack. i didn't shower for a week after watching this the first time! Herrmann's soundtrack is the perfect compliment to Hitchcock's indelible visuals. Sound design (especially score) are a major part of what makes movies effective.
Can hear Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" influence in places. Check out my original song tribute "Here's To Alfred Hitchcock," here on YouTube. Just click on my name below or search "CraigASilver."
@CraigASilver It also sounds influenced by Prokofiev's Scythian, Invocation to Veles and Ala. Rite of Spring was also a very heavy influence on one of the tracks from the Omen soundtrack.
@Reikanuchan What's younger generations got to do with it? I hate people like you who just think all young people are a bunch of uncultured swine. Die!
@snoopatomicdog They miss great movies like this. Instead, they grow up with fucking iIcarly, Victorious, Miley Cyrus, Rebecca Black, Bieber, and other bullshit.
1. I think a lot of horror scenes have this squeaky violin theme, and this is probably where it started.
2. This makes me think of Blink from Doctor Who.
3. After seeing so many "Killed in the shower" concepts, I admit to being a little afraid when taking a shower. Anyone else who's seen those parts can probably agree.
I'm trying to persuade my local football team's match announcer to play this (or the theme from A Fistful of Dollars or Duelling Banjos) as our 'run-out' music! Really mess with the heads of our opponents each game!!
@nikos567 it is also a lie that avatar was the only movie with good special effects. District 9 had amazing special effects, and a good plot and actions scenes(avatar had a predictable plot and too much talking for an action movie). District 9, Psycho, And Saving Private Ryan, andSilence of the Lambs are my top 4 movie ever, with Lord of the Rings and anything by Stven Spelberg and George Lukas behind
@nikos567 the toll bags like this one kid I know who says avatar was the only good movie ever in the history of cinema cuz avatar was the only good move to have good special effects. You know, the idiots who say special effects are the only thing that make movies good and all movies without avatar grader special fx are crap
@LePatay Easy. Those are just very high notes with rises up to them. They're quarter notes, so in fact, this is very easy to play. But you might want to have a good reaching "fret" hand to get to the high note.
Interesting. What makes you say that? Hitchcock wasn't one to give his collaborators much credit for their imput, at least not publicly. I think he believed his own PR, or let himself believe it. Good as Psycho is--and it is--I think the score is even better.
@4Topwood He may not have given his collaborators much credit, but I think that was because he didn't want to share the spotlight. He was a diva, but he wasn't stupid. I do think he was more than aware of his collaborators' importance, which was why he allowed them a greater degree of creative freedom than many believe. He once publicly admitted that "33% of the effect of Psycho was due to the music" (I'd say 50%, but he the point is he wasn't blind, er, deaf, to what Herrman did for him).
Oh, yes, I've read enough about Hitchcock to know he was a diva. But I didn't know he publicly admitted how much of Psycho's effect was due to the music.
I just wondered if maybe he didn't know how much the music contributed to Psycho's success because on some level he couldn't let himself know, if you see what I mean.
@4Topwood Hitchcock was a film-creating genius who, of course, knew the impact music can have on the viewer. Supposedly he himself said: "33% of the effect of Psycho was due to the music."
Yes, Hitchcock acknowledged Herrmann's brilliant score had an impact but frankly, I think he underestimated it. Only 33%? I don't think so. As I said here earlier, I can watch Psycho with the sound off without getting scared. But hearing the score without seeing the movie still scares the hell out of me.
@4Topwood Actually Hitchcock said the music was very important. He said it's the 33% of a movie. He knew exactly that the soundtrack in every movie contributes to make it a success or a fail. So, he did realize. And I think every good filmmaker realizes that.
Yes, I know he said that. But frankly, I think 33% is a bit too low, in this case. That why I said what I said. Look at all the tens of thousands of hits the music from Psycho has right here. Just glancing at it, it seems to me more are listening to the music than watching clips of the movie.
of course you wouldnt feel much if the sound was turned off, this was not supposed to be a mute movie in the first place. you mean if you turned the music off? Psycho is more of a thriller not a scary movie, it doesnt have blood gushing and corpses walking around. Not only the music is brilliant, but parts of the dialogue, the montage, the plot, the acting especially tony perkins so yeah if you turn the sound off you aint left with much except for the exceptional camera angles.
Ok, funny story. I was in French class waiting for the teacher. My teacher from last semester, whom no one liked, walks in and says she'll be our teacher for the next few weeks. The first thing that popped into my mind, 4:31
i would start screaming in fear if i was lost in the woods and this song was playing......there is just something creepy about being all alone in the dark woods!

None of those hold a candle to true greats like Herrmann, Morricone, Bernstein, Goldsmith and Schifrin.
John Williams borrows heavily from classic composers, and some sections are almost uncanny. As for Horner. He copies himself and is lately one of those new breed of generic composers, alongside Hans Zimmer and the likes.
@McLarenMercedes I agree with you about Hans Zimmer and James Horner, though I think they have very occasional good moments. As for Williams, I have to respectfully disagree. It's true, there are several moments in Star Wars where he directly steals from other composers, (and that's very disappointing) but, as far as I've seen, only in Star Wars. His other scores seem to me totally original and sublime. Have another listen to Superman, Close Encounters, and Jaws. Try my Youtube favorites.
@TheInspirationExpert More specifically - from Superman - try the "Can You Read My Mind" love theme, the "Leaving Home" theme (from 1:30 to the end), and the "Prelude/Main Titles". From Jaws - try "Preparing the Cage". And actually, from Star Wars, the "Luke and Leia" theme - no one ever mentions it, and I think it's the best from any of the Star Wars movies. I can't detect any borrowing here either. And from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, there's only one video, near the end of the list.
@TheInspirationExpert And I am sorry to take up so much space here - I wish Youtube had a "read more" option on their comments, and no limit on their length, but there you have it. I'm not saying all this to be argumentative - I just think you sound like a rather intelligent person, and I think you might take pleasure from this music upon closer inspection. If not, then to each his own, and there's nothing wrong with that. Tell me what you think of this stuff. I'd be interested in your reaction.
He WAS. Ok, you probably are well aware he died 35 years ago. His final work was Taxi Driver, which he literally finished the night he died, one year before the movie itself was released.
I sometimes use the Psycho theme when I am in a hurry driving somewhere or on desolate country roads. Needless to say I don't play the theme when I have passengers, wouldn't wanna scare them or make them nervous.
Bernard Hermann was definately great, what a talent!

This is weird, some of the parts, are lovely and tender, and others, make your temperature rush, you feel breathless... Hermann was a genius.
