Wow! Just stumbled across this, I was in the LSSO playing this in 1999. I didn't know anyone had recorded it, let alone put it on YouTube. I can just make myself out, front desk violas, but no the principal!
@wlegge This was recorded by a friend of mine called Jim Monk who's daughter was in the orchestra. I've also uploaded parts of Tchaik 6 from the same concert and also the complete Tchaik 6 from the Classic Fm De Mont concert in the same year.
Thinkin' about Smiths gigs when we were waitin' for them chills still Moz you' re the best you choose the BEST version ever!! which I can't find here; oh my God, I'm listen to this near the end, it was a ral mess
It has the same part as Tuba and Double Bass (the latter one being only for the bassline, i.e. excluding the low F to A flat middle part). Actually, in most videos, they focus on the Double Bass rather than the Low Brass for the bassline.
Could somebody please tell me why somebody in my year got really angry at me todday for suggesting that this piece is called march of the montagues, with him insisting it was called dance of the knights. Having lookied them both up, i'm sure that they're both exactly the same.
This is from Prokofiev's ballet music Romeo and Juliet. It's called Montagues and Capulets but it also has the alternative name of Dance of the Knights. It certainly isn't March of the Montagues.
This is an orchestra that draws its players from a number of towns in Leicestershire. It is part of the state education system. I've written an article on Wikipedia if you would like to get more info. There is also a LSSO website with sound clips. Thanks for your interest.
Sorry about the short extract. The orchestra actually played the usual concert suite in full - It's just that I only have a few minutes of video taken during the performance. As a matter of interest, why do you call it a song. It's not a song. It's a piece of orchestral music. A lot of Americans call pieces of music "songs" for some peculiar reason.
It's not a song. That's my point. It's ballet music written for full symphony orchestra. It must be an American thing. Maybe you call Beethoven's 5th a song.
Well it's not the whole ballet. You only put The Montagues and the Capulets, not Lover's Parting or any other "pieces". I don't see why you have to be so technical.
I have to agree with Bannan, I'm sorry...this just is not a song. It is a piece of classical music. If I'd called that a song I'd have gotten a swift rapping of knuckles or knees by my ballet teacher. -_-;;
hahaha i'm in the LSSO now from 2006/2007 and we played this as well, along with the ballet, the Paz has certainly got whiter in his old age but the level of talent certainly is still there
Geez, I love this piece so much. I'm learning it on piano as of now. Prokofief was brilliant. Russia cranks out great pianists with their tedious musical training.
That's fantastic!Love it)

I've heard it called March of the Capulets and March of the Montagues but why bother arguing about a name when we can enjoy such a fine piece

Maybe your think of the Imperial March from Star Wars? They do sound alike and yes I'm aware that this composition is much older than the other.

Bass Trombonist has the right idea but maybe a little more of a focused sound on the low F to the Bb, not so much of a "splat". Good attempt though.

I love the fact that there is a Contrabassoon with a Low A extension resting on stage there...is that OWNED by your school system???
bssnboo 3 years ago
Yes, all the instruments are owned by the LSSO.
bannan61 3 years ago
Is this a public school? If so, this music program is obviously well-funded... :)

yes he is being a bit overly technical, but its not a song, by definition a song has to have words, its a piece of music
