Yes, in the one portrait I've seen of her with her hair loose as a child, she was almost auburn, and quite pretty. Perhaps the producers find that a dark haired Catherine contrasts better with strawberry blonde Henry.
I hate when people pick who was the best wife or who Henry loved the most. I feel for all of them they all had their issues and talents which were mostly Henry's fault. Catherine of Argon: devotion/virtue, Anne Boleyn: Courage/wit, Jane Seymour: quite/discrete, Anne of Cl eves: kindness and support Catherine, Howard: youth, and Catherine Parr: wit and patience
I am amazed at the comments about the actresses here. Please shut up and learn some history. These women are made in the image and likeness of God. I wonder what the people who are commenting look like!
@calihartley2010 What do you look like? It's just Youtube, people are going to comment how they like, if one likes it or not. Don't like it, best not to read the comments. I do think the actress are pretty in there own way.
@TheVideoCat Henry was called the most handsome prince in Christendom. He was tall, athletic, red hair--gorgeous. It was only later in life after a severe fall that he stopped exercising and got fat.
If you want to see the most realistic portrayal of these historical figures, look for the 6 wives of Henry VIII with Keith Michel. The actors doing the men, even lesser characters like Cranmer or the Duke of Norfolk, are dead ringers for their portraits. Catherine of Aragon is blond, and the costuming is gorgeous.
In the begining of the clip as Catherine walks it looks as though she had a stick up her butt. The actress didnt look like she would be of spanish descent.
Thanks for uploading this documentary! I can't decide who is my favorite of the six: Katherine of Aragon or Anne Boleyn. They were both amazing! Kate Parr was pretty fabulous too.
I so love the dresses they are wearing. I have to say that this period, the Elizabethan and the 18th Century are my favorite considering fashion. I'm not so much keen on the Edwaderian or the Victorian era in regard to fashion unless Early Victorian.
I just dant get enough of this part of history. Reading all the books and articles, watching "The Tudors" over and over, watching all i could get about it on YT and still I never get tired!
@choperchic24 She asks what the letter says, then Catherine says I am too be remarried to Henry. She then says, when will you be married and she says soon, then she says, are you happy and she says yes and my mother also.
@choperchic24 In their first conversation Catherine is wondering about the possibility of Arthur visiting her that night. During the second one she is telling to her lady in waiting that the English king has proposed a second marriage and she is so happy because her parents will be thrilled :-)
I read some of the comments before I started watching this and I was juuuuust about to type that the ladies in this show aren't as bad looking as the ones in Elizabeth I: A Virgin Queen. (THOSE were some barkers!!!)
Then the very first princess, the Spanish one, smiled (0:55). I overlooked the holy-shit eyebrows but the gap big enough to drive a double-decker bus thru when she smiled... What is wrong with the casting directors on that side of the pond!!??
So I am suprise at David Starkey, Being a Tudor Historian he should have gotten Katherine of Aragon's Physical Potrayl right. Then again maybe that wasn't up to him
Why is it in almost all documentaries and film, Catherine of Aragon was portrayed as a dark-haired and unattractive, wasn't she supposed to be a redhead and beautiful, at least in her youth?
@MysteryChocolate I know! Katherine, in her portraits, could almost be mistaken for British with her blue eyes, peaches and cream complexion, and red hair, was certainly fair (in her coloring and physical attraction)
@diddims Yes, and in one portrait of her portraying Mary Magdalene, she looks lovely! Catherine's actress needs to man-scape those eyebrows and get some braces!
@MysteryChocolate I know! Katherine, in her portraits, could almost be mistaken for British with her blue eyes, peaches and cream complexion, and red hair; she was certainly fair (in her coloring and physical attraction)
@MysteryChocolate I always wonder the same thing! She was described as being "the most beautiful creature in the world" in her younger years. I believe Thomas More was quoted as saying, and I'm paraphrasing, "no one could compete with Queen Catherine in her prime." It's like these casting directors have never seen her portrait, and assume all Hispanics are dark, when that is far from the truth. This is a good series so far, though.
@MysteryChocolate I didn't know about the red hair - but I always pictured her as beautiful, she is always described as beautiful in books and historical accounts. She somehow always appears dowdy in movies and tv shows though, its strange. I guess they want to make Anne Boelyn look prettier by contrast
@ChristineScholz on the other hand, 16 was not an unusual age for a girl/woman to get married in those days, sometimes even younger (as far as i know girls were considered marriageable at the age of 13). for example, even empress elisabeth of austria (sisi) 350 years later was only 16 when she got married. if your life expectancy is at about 45 years you don't have much of a choice i guess...
because they were so young, it isn't unlikely that katharine and arthur faked having sex and planned to wait for a few years, which is how her marriage wasn't consummated, and she therefore denied henry viii his annulment
@pollutedmizuno Somne people are just to dumb to understand it.. Because they have watched The Tuors(No offence i LOVE that show) they'll think they know everything, and actually think that, the people looked like that. "Why is she so pretty? On the tudors she is ugly? i don't understand it"
I was Queen Catherine of Aragon for a history project nine or so years ago. I learned so much about her. She struck me as a very strong woman. The way she stood up to Henry VIII regarding her marriage with him was very admirable in my opinion. This was a time when woman had almost no voice of their own.
Arthur wasn't sick with TB on their wedding night. Why he didn't consummate the marriage is just weird considering how they seemed to be attracted to one another.
Catherine of Aragon was blonde! Why do producers insist on representing her as a dark haired, dark eyed woman!

For a man that had no use for girls, isn't it rather ironic that his wives and daughters are rather MORE well known than he is?
Hell, his first two wives,QUeen Katherine and Queen Anne are arguably more well known and discussed than he is!
Not to mention his daughters,Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth.
