This song inspired me to take up singing lessons, it was my second week today after so many years singing away to the radio and CD's I final pluck up the courage and it has been the most liberating thing I have ever done if you think you can hold a note or if someone has told you that you have a good voice go and do it, you will have fun! 'I bet you sing with Donovan!' :-)
Love the way Donovan keeps the bass run goin and the melody, sounds like to two guitars,a feature in all his songs, even Dylan looks on in awe! so proud of this Brit!
Donovan was the UK's response after Bob Dylan was connecting with people and the times, and as you can tell they're both legends in their own right and with each other! Enjoy the music and the messages that they both gave!
Thanks for posting my favorite Donovan song. My old vinyl recording of it on the "Catch the Wind' album is now white due to repeated playing - that analog version is much more emotional than digital. This video is the best substitute.
The thing that people miss about Don is that when he arrived on the UK folk scene he wasn't a Dylan imitator - both Don AND Dylan were so taken by Woody Guthrie that they both began trying to BE Woody. Then they both moved off onto separate paths. To claim that Donovan is less important than Dylan is meaningless without providing a list of the names of those who were MORE important than Dylan, and that's going to be a blank page innit?
Well...Donovan DID teach Bob how to finger-pick, but beyond that they're equals on separate planes to me. Donovan more mystical & Bob more cryptic. Something like that..well..you had to be there! :) Love love love them both!
As Dylan is supposedly listening to Donovan, he's jittery and fidgeting his arms and legs out of rhythm; a narcissistic meltdown. Finally, the level of applause following each performance tells it all. Afterward, Dylan sounds like a clumsily amateur guitarist and falsely arrogant singer.
This wasn't a competition so why all the hostility thrown Donavan's way? He was respectfully deferential to a more accomplished artist, and that artist even offered that it was a good song. I don't think anyone commenting here has the creds to say otherwise.
Dylan was head and shoulders above the English moron hangers -on. Especially Donovan and to a greater extent Alan Price. Watch Price try to open a can of beer by smashing it on his piano and trying to look 'cool'. Very funny.
Prototype music for Dylans later work like "Nashville Skyline". Both of them are icons. Neither better than the other. I love them both. Minstrels, Bards of the 20th century.
LOL I love all the pathetic arguing on here. It's not enough to sit back and enjoy the music, most of you have to get your oh so important opinions out there just to piss other people off. "Donovan is better" "No Dylan is better!" WTF does it matter? Both created messages of love and peace and yet half of you feel the need to whine about the most trivial crap....look around you and be thankful you're alive and able to enjoy this music.
Sorry, I just never liked Dylan, however much other people bang on about how great he is... never liked his look, his irritating nasal whine... Donovan is far far more my cup of tea !! ;)
@MegaBrotherJames Donovon wrote better melodies. Dylan, for all his iconic status, was actually very academic in his approach when he first started. He went so far as to use a false speaking voice and lie about his background to seem more "authentically Southern". From today's perspective, his earlier radio interviews sound downright bizarre. IMO, he was just too self conscious. Also, anyone who can fall for born again Christianity can't be too brilliant
arguing over who is better, Dylan or Donovan, is idiotic. It shows that you don't get it. They are totally different. They are both great. And they both heavily influenced the direction of music.
Donovan and Dylan both started out as folk singers. Do some searches or *read* Dylan as he discusses Donovan. They have a lot in common.
To say that they can't be compared just shows that you do not understand music and how it evolves. Dylan influenced Donovan, and vice versa. Donovan also influened the Beatles and vice versa.
dude shut up... ive read dylan biographies, i know what im saying, its an opinion... what im against is the ones better than the other mentality, just because you can play a few chords doesnt mean you can preach, keep your self righteousness to yourself, i bet you cant even read music
What does reading music have to do with one's knowledge of music. Music is much more than just reading it. It is feeling it too. Look at blues artists like Son House. He couldn't read music, but he could tell you more about music than you could ever fathom.
@bassist448 Right on.Paul McCartney at one time said he didn't wanna learn too much music theory and how to read music because he was afraid it would make him too narrowminded about it. I have friends who know a lot of music theory and they think all songs should be a certain way...totally boring.
i think donovan was well better than dylan, his voice is better, his songs were better..granted he did cover some dylan songs and his guitar playing was far better...hes no hendrix...but you get the idea
well, supose it is my opinion however point me in the direction of dylan song thats a fairly decent degree of guitar technique that proves otherwise and if your right ill hapily admit your right....dont get me wrong though ido like dylans music im not trying to diss him in any way.
I think Good as I been to You and World Gobe Wrong are evidence of Dylans superior acoustic guitar playin skills. In the context of a rock band Dylans skills are admittedly not great. I also feel Dylans overall songwriting has more depth. I still love this song though
they both were great, why should we compare both artists that are great? Bob had a personality that was strong and is something all artists should have, a sense of their own opinion and attitude and belief and isn't afraid to tell it how it really is. I saw Bob in the Time Interview video and was amazed, more celebrities need to be like that, and not worry about the money but others around and how they're being influenced because of themselves (the celebrities).
well dont get me wrong i do quite lilke dylans music..some of it, but i find his voice to be a bit whiney and anoying.
to say that its simply ignorant is wrong, i do like dylan and have said so in previous posts, im actually quite fond of dylan and do a pretty accurate impression of him, so im familiar with his music and have made an informed opinion of them both thats all.
man people will bitch about anything. I wish i was suprised but im not... just jaded..... dylan said it he ment it...... this is a GOOD SONG MAN........
No that is not sarcasm. Dylan takes that same defensive laughing posture throughout much of the film. Was he being sarcastic during his talk with the fan whom he almost asked to leave? No, and he wasn't being sarcastic to Donovan. Donovan's song, while nothing compared to "Baby Blue," is a pretty good song. And it wasn't a competition. Watch closely: Donovan *asks* Dylan to play "Baby Blue." Check out "Sunny Goodge Street" and "Celeste" from Donovan's next two albums. He is no slouch.
No Dylan did thing it was good. He was a fan, despite what the movie seems to suggest. There's a scene that didn't make it in the film of Dylan listening to "Catch The Wind" on LP and being blown away.
heeey, you're just repeating the urban legend repeated by know-nothing music critics from the sixties.... they wrote off Donovan as a Dylan clone... but they'd probably have written off Woody Guthrie as a Dylan clone too...
I'm 16 years old and haven't really read any 60s music articles, and from watching this documentary, that's just what I see. I mean he's laughing at his ballad.
And Woody Guthrie sounds very different then Dylan so that doesn't really make since. Only the phrasing is kind of similar.
I just think Donovan's music is really corny, I don't consider him a clone of Dylan. Before the whole Dylan goes electric thing New York was full of folk singers like Dylan, besides the lyrics.
