fighting your own zanpakuto would essentally be like fighting themselves at this point and they would get no where, especially after having depended on their zanpakuto and shikai for so long. So fighting each other's would be the smartest thing to do at this point. And since they are fighting each other's would it suffice to say that the captains and vice captains are essentially fighting each other (so we can use as reference for strength )?

-It would be a lot simpler if they dont fight their own zanpaktou. That way they can attack the zanpaktou as if it were a new enemy and use a different fighting style. They usually are a lot like their zanpaktou and would have the same fighting style. for example look how long it took: soi fon, yumichika, byakuya, rukia,etc.
