What I find interesting about Luther is that he admitted Peter was the rock of Matthew 16:18, but could not or would not admit that Peter had sucessors in the Popes. If he had, then he would have had some explaining to do;)
What most people don't know about him is that because of his sola scriptura stance, he didn't condemn polygamy and thought it was okay since the bible never condemns polygamy. He advised Philip of Hesse to hide his second wife. The Lutheran church in Liberia even allows polygamy.
I dislike so much what Martin Luther did. I like that he stood against indulgences but almost all his teachings were off. He actually IS portrayed as some hero and prophet (without actually calling him one) in many Lutheran churches (primarily the conservative ones). I'm glad I am going to be leaving. James leads us to think it was his works, but we know EVERYONE who has true faith will show good works. I dislike so much what Martin Luther did. I like that he stood against indulgences but almost all his teachings were off. He actually IS portrayed as some hero and prophet (without actually calling him one) in many Lutheran churches (primarily the conservative ones). I'm glad I am going to be leaving. The thing about Luther quotes, they are literally over the place. He says one thing one day, & on some other day he utterly contradicts the previously statement. When numbers of PEOPLE are used, it has NEVER been symbolic before in the Bible. There needs to be an example elsewhere in the Bible that numbers of PEOPLE are symbolic before concluding that 144000 is. Furthermore, God knows where and who belongs to these tribes and he will reveal it in HIS OWN DUE TIME. I dont take Paul out of context either! I QUOTED!

If he meant apostles, it would have been identified as either 1. apostles, or 2. the twelve, or 3. by name. I asked him how he was Catholic, and he told me because his mother is Catholic and his grandmother is Catholic. So, you have a public relations problem with people BORN INTO Catholicism. People think that Catholicism is a RACE of people, rather than a CHOICE.

@TheSacredHeart2 Your body is the Temple of God. Do you think that God leaves you everytime you commit a sin? God states that he will never leave you nor forsake you. So if he never leaves, how is it that your sin can be counted against you? Scripture states that before the law, sin was in the world, but where there is no law, there is no transgression. Are Christians under the law? NO. Was Abraham? NO. There is no transgression for us. NO SIN can be counted against us. (Romans 4 and 5)

Apparently you aren't Catholic, because all Catholics I have talked to (and seen on EWTN) agree with me that FAITH is the only part that saves you, but that no you can't have salvation (or faith) without works! In other words, if you have faith your house is on fire, you will do works such as screaming and vacating the house ASAP. Faith is the same way, those who believe in God will fear and obey him!!!

It is utterly pointless to show errors in Luther and impute them on every Protestant there is in the world. So the fact that Luther opposed the Epistle of James does not nullify or refute my faith, as I am following the Bible and the Early Church in my beliefs and traditions. Furthermore, Luther, Calvin, Melancthon, or any other of these individuals, is not the model of my faith. So I'm afraid you're appealing to fallacious reasoning.

And if you want to deny Sola Scriptura that's fine, but who's to say any denomination can't just go around making up dogma as they well please? Is it ok for Orthodoxy to regard their traditions as Holy and infallible? What about Coptics or Anglicans? The answers Catholics give as to why they are the "real church" and correct are the same reasons Orthodox give. Its a cat and mouse game.

@RockyRegulu5 yeah I understand it to mean "Peter, you will help build the foundation of my church (Christianity in general - not a specific denomination). Untill the council of Nicaea, people couldn't decide how Christ's deity related to God's. They went back and forth between Homoiousian and Homoousian (in similar nature to God v.s. the same nature of God.) So either the Catholic church has erred or the Catholic church wasn't founded yet. You decide. My guess is both (see also: "borgias")

3:25 you said "follow" when the actual word in the quote is "allow", big difference. Luther is not rebuking the ten commandments, Luther is simply pushing the point that focusing on faith in Christ is more important than focusing on doing good works with no faith. The jews don't believe in Christ, but follow the ten commandments, would you condone this?

@mbaren58 yeah BUT, in the Rom verse, Paul says it was his faith credited to him as righteousness. James leads us to think it was his works, but we know EVERYONE who has true faith will show good works. The works aren't part of the salvation, but anyone who believes in an all powerful God, heaven, and hell will surely keep his commandments and do his works!

A copy of a prayer to Mary is dated 250 A.D., originally in Greek, and other prayers by early Christians could have been kept by heart since there were no printing presses yet at their time. In the prayer, the Christians were calling her Mother of God - "Theotokos".

Luther never want to remove the ten commandments but to have people study them better( including those who cant read because the bible wasnt translated into their language. And good works are sin if you DO THOSE WORKS as means of salvation and not simply out of conviction to follow Christ. Paul said not to be circumcised or you would be bound to the law, but Christ freed us from the law, meaning it is necessary to follow the Holy Spirit, which will in essence fulfill the law, and also allow us to do good works, but not for the purpose of deserving salvation! And yes some popes said some questionable stuff. Google "Banquet of Chestnuts"

Works should be given to Jesus and all works and rewards you obtain from works should be given to Jesus. Faith and Works are both intertwined and lead to salvation. Works done which represent and glorify the teachings of Jesus are needed, along with the faith within Jesus Christ as a God. Popes are men and can sin..
