The accent really isn't funny. It just shows his immaturity at the time. If I, as a black woman, read this with a deep voice like his, people would crucify me. im black and i think that hilarious. dont take it so seriously. black slaves did speak that way because they were from the south. of course you don't talk that way today but im sure some black peoples grandparents do talk that way because i know mine do. good job do. im actually reading this book right now

Frederick Douglass did not sound like that. His oratory was world known and his speeches in the UK and Europe changed the minds of the various denominations in this country through his campaign across the Atlantic and helped end slavery. You make a mockery of the history that freed you too white boy.

Why lighten up? Are we willing to accept just part of the story and the stereotypes that have been passed down because we are too stuck in our ways to learn the truth. You say lighten up, I say get heavy man. Perhaps it's my level of education and extensive reading and consequent admiration of a man who changed the world and happened to be black that makes me refuse to "lighten up".
