I did it! I got a sound! Thanks for this video- very helpful. And now I don't have to regret buying my nice shakuhachi on ebay, before even knowing how to play it!
I couldn't get a sound out mine before I watched this video- turns out I had my lips too far back; watching his side view was very helpful. I've at least got a sound now, albeit a hit and miss wavering screech but that's better than the sound of me hyperventilating.
I have no woodwind experience up til now, but I've loved the sound of this flute since I was a boy. I picked up a PVC shaku (because 1. I don't have the money for a genuine one, and 2. I am not worthy of it yet :-)) After spending endless time without getting a tone, I viewed this video and got it in about five minutes. Turns out it was the positioning of my mouth that was in error. Thank you sir.
Where might someone who has never played before go to obtain a shakuhachi and also perhaps a means to learn it? I assume there must be some sort of book or program.
@bloodymissb I bought mine from bambooflutestore. It was a beginner one for 40 bucks. Cheapest one I found and I just got it today. It seems very nice and I just figured out recently how to make a note lol. The store took 2 weeks to get it to me though so that is definitely slow but I got it!
i bought a whalesong beginner shakuhachi from amazon...anyone know if it's any good? (i am an absolute beginner i just want it to sound good enough and be easy on me
It's about blowing the air in the wooden flute, braces, with my experience, don't stop the wind from blowing from your mouth. So yeah, I believe it's possible.
@viethugzzz: It's not about trying hard. Just let the breath go across the utagachi as you exhale. What kind of shak do you play? I'm working on a 1.8 Yuu. Just learning to read the notation and all the ranges that are available to play.
Thanks a lot. I never tried to blow the backside of the mouthpiece, but instead tried to blow direct at the cutting edge. Never had a constant good tone, but now I know better.
thanks for this great video. I tried to get out some tunes from my Shakuhachi for a while now and even read a book. But your video gave me enlightenment. After playing the easiest note, I could make all the others too.
However, I am going through the other videos - thanks for the good work. And I really enjoy your playing.
It may be the easiest but it is really hard to do it

I just bought my first Shakuhachi, and I'm having a lot of trouble learning how to play it. Do you cover up the hole on the bottom when you play?
Jay7201995 1 year ago
nope you blow it somewhat like blowing a bottle.

I own a couple of Shakuhachi from sizzorfite_studio.
They sound and look just as nice as the more expensive models.
Check them out on ebay.

The shakuhachi plays just like the quena or quenacho, from the Andes. Interesting
