i am so sorry...living in california took me out of the michigan outdoors loop....fred was awesome!! he was better than mort and had a better personality than bob garner. i shook his hand 3 times and misshim on my tv....tinks sucks!!!
Hi Zach - my dad loved watching your dad - he supports the philosophy that Mort and your dad shared about the outdoors. There are those in the state that sanitize it and I'm glad your dad kept it real. My father and I had practically nothing we were so poor - watching your dad on PBS was something we looked forward to every week during tough times.
I agree with Biggkev8 about the intro. I loved that song.....every thursday night I would hear that from the other room and I knew it was Michigan out of doors time. I lost my dad a few years ago at 51 years old and the song reminds me of the old days I miss. I hope someone can post it on youtube!
hi zachary, we lost our dad a couple of years ago and my heart goes out to you and yours. if it hadn't been for my dad and mom, none of the walsh kids would have ever known about fred trost. i just watched this video for the first time and thought it was really cool. your dad was a true pioneer. i miss him and the shows he was involved with. i can picture our dad's in heaven, spilling a pot of chili or missing a rooster with the side by side. anyways, thanks, tom
Worked on the show as studio camera operator, associate director and a few as studio director and just wanted to say it was the most fun I had working on any show at wkar-tv . and YOU KNOW FRED WAS ONE OF A KIND.. You be lucky to run into a Talent like his in a lifetime. I really the guy. The world was just more intereting when he was around.
Does anyone have the Michigan Outdoors theme? The one "From the rugged shores and woodlands of the north's history to the copper mines and iron ores..." I always loved that song! I think it was by the kickers (from lansing). If anyone has this, can they post it?
I was at the memorial for Fred. My dad and I attended as Fred had a major influence on me growing up. We had "fried chicken and Fred Trost" night every thursday. He has been missed since the day he passed. At 26 years of age, I wish I knew him earlier but he still had a major influence in me and made me the sportsman I am now. Thanks Fred for all you have taught me.
And Zach, I thought you were going to release some episodes on DVD?
Fred was a Great American. I still have over 12 hours of Opening Day and Big Buck Night footage that I taped with my VCR when I was a kid. Every year the night before the Opener, my brothers and I gather to watch the old footage. That collection is priceless to me. I wish I could get my hands on more. Fred you will always be missed. May you Rest In Peace and God Bless.
I'll always miss Fred Trost's Michigan Outdoors on PBS channel 23 8:00 pm on Thursday nights. I always gotta kick when Fred would pick on Bob Garner during the recipes section of the show. And, who can forget about Big Buck Night. Fantastic memories. Your Father touched so many lives in a positive way.
I am not sure if he worked with Dick or not. I know they knew each other. Dick worked for Mort Neff on the Original Michigan Outdoors as did my father.
your dad really spoke up for the everyday guy in Michigan.I miss his insight very much and wish he were here,we need guys like him. Thanks for posting this, bummer about the audio though
I see that it's been a while since this was posted, but thank you very much just the same for posting these videos. They are an interesting look into Fred's history that I never had the chance to see in the roughly 8 years I watched the show. I miss Fred's insight and humor an awful lot.
Aside from my dad, no one inspired me to hunt and fish more than Fred Trost. I didn't find out that he died for a few months after he passed, and I'ma bit pissed the local mid Michigan news channels (5, 12 and 25) didn't seem to mention it at all. Not that I noticed anyway, and I watch the nes every night. RIP, Fred. Zach, put as much up as you can. I'd really like to hear/see the opening credits of Michigan Outdoors from the 80's.
"It's 8 o'clock Thursday night. Time for Michigan Outdoors."
How I lived for Thursday nights. Mort and Fred were the best and Fred carried on the tradition just wonderfully. My, how I miss those shows. RIP Fred, you are still loved.
Thanks for posting these man! It's funny just this morning I got on the site to see if there were any old episodes to watch. I grew up on Fred's show.
You dishonor your Father and all he tried to do in this world for the outdoors.
Another worthless child trying to live off his Father's coattails, get out and do your own work and let people enjoy what your Dad left behind.

Your Dad was a great inspiration to me, it's hard to think of Michigan and hunting without thinking of your Dad.
