from what iv played, the map making in the first game was frustrating and time consuming and not enjoyable. I still want to get into one of these games, i wish they had an auto-mapping option (or at least mostly auto).
@love4remind No no no no no... Don't you see? That's the point! Exploration is far more rewarding if you are mapping it out yourself. I've heard plenty of stories of people who had absolute blasts with the original Metroid, and Dungeons and Dragons is built off of the same principle. The map-making draws me to this series more than anything else.
@love4remind agreed, the manual mapping is just a waste of time, i dont find it rewarding to do something that only hardcore games like metroid and golgo 13 from the NES era force you to do in order to finish the game
most jrpgs are a rip-off of some other jrpg... Anyway this game is quite a bit different from the DQ series in the fact that the focus is more on dungeon-crawling and grinding gear/levels/etc. DQ is heavier on the story aspect and streamlines the leveling process (read: not as customizable). Anyone picking this up and expecting a DQ clone would be in for a surprise (a pleasant one, IMO).
Etrian Odyssey is actually adversed to grinding. Assigning tech point and using skills in battles is more key than simply selecting attack. Most people can get through without much worry about their levels provided they play smartly (like the video says, people in the front lines are usually attacked first, so setting your high defence bufferers there will spare yourself from receiving much unneeded damage).
@sfried actually is all about grinding, the skills are only to fool the players, thea advantages you get are pretty mediocre and is you will find yourself grinding instead of "thinking" about a powerful set of skills
@Anemite Actually no. There are playthroughs which involved fewer party members and carefull use of items and buffs, not to mention said party members had pretty low levels. You can get by this game without grinding if you play smartly. In fact, EO games reward you for not grinding since the Inn starts charging you higher prices once your party levels up.
@sfried sure, if you dont mind dying a lot of times with a low level, this game is pure hardcore for those who like to grind, nothing more, strategy is barely used in this game
Do you have to play the first two to play this one? I'm finding the first two harder and harder to find. So, if I can possibly start on this one, please let me know! Thanks.
@zabimaru793 I think it's safe to say that you can jump right in with this one. Just don't forget to buy EO3 before it gets hard to find, too (which, as all Atlus games, it definitely will)...
@zabimaru793 Yeah, I've learned to buy Atlus games as soon as they come out if I have any interest in them, even if I can't play them until later. They don't make that many in a print run, since they're a small company that makes and publishes niche games.
If not, be prepared to pay about double their original price. O_O
I'm still trying to find a copy of Knights in the Nightmare for DS for a reasonable price.
@zabimaru793 I find Etrian Odyssey I and II often on Amazon.com Warehouse Deals section. Just go to their home page and click on the warehouse deals, then lower left for video games. Also just searching and looking at "other sellers"; usually you'll see them. One way to gaurantee a complete package.
@chronocream Yeah. I plan to look for them on Amazon once I get some extra cash. They are a tad expensive(probably cause they are rarer than most games)
@moneraa Yup, I got gang rape on the first floor and when to the second floor to early got kill 90% percentage of the time >.<. Finally got the hang of it during the second one. Old-school dugeon RPG
@shadowdemonlord yup thats how the old school dungeon rpgs work.... lol you gotta grind alot for 1 floor to be able to actually go through the game with some easiness.
Fuck yes FM bass!

Wish this would have a proper auto-map function. It's been around since Might and Magic II!

@Anemite You only die at low levels if you don't know what you're doing.

@Anemite
1.The exp rate is higher compared to previous EOs.
2.Subclasses become available.
3.Limits are settable.
4.Sea quests require TOTAL strategy. Not if you're on a high level, but the last one...
And you STILL think it's tough?

You mean you could'nt customise your limits in the previous game?
I'm new to this.

The battle scenes look like they were made in RPG Maker XP, but that's ok because I like these dungeon crawler style games. Already preordered.
