  • BRAVA. In my opinion, this is the ultimate recording of this aria. Bar none.

  • This was the very first time i ever heard Let the bright seraphim and it has remained one of my all time favourite, Inger's version is stil one of my faves.

  • She was 29 when she won this and sang this showing a maturity beyond her years.

She is a wonderful Handelian and has had a great career and has years ahead of her.

  • one of the best renditions i've heard! fabulous!

  • Ï just love her way of singing one of my favourite pieces.

  • She is Amazing. So under rated in the US! if she hasn't already, she needs to come to the US and share her amazing gift!

  • Fiesty!

  • I love the change in vibrato speed at the 4:50 mark. It might have been a trill of sorts.

  • @lisolisao I understand where you are coming from, but I love the color of this voice so much more. What I do not understand is how people are so stubborn and always place a high importance/precedence on the previous generation of singers. They are both just as capable and gifted.

  • Super!Brava!

    Mi piace molto Cleopatra!

  • This is great. My favorite second only to Kathleen Battle's version. Don't know about that vocal run at 2:49, but overall I'll definitely have to check out more of this singer.

  • what was wrong with it?

  • What great energy and intensity this beautiful, talented young lady sings with! K.Battle was my favorite performer for this piece, now, I"m wondering... Should I listen more? lOL... Both are great!

  • That trumpet is TINY!

We did this in church with organ.. :)

  • yes, it's tiny, but it sounds very well. It Could be the music is written for a trunpet like that?

  • yeah, probably. It's just it's unusual to see instruments that small. Actually it might be a cornet or something, I'm not quite sure.

But yeah, it does sound good.

  • yes its a piccolo trumpet- it used so the obbligato doesnt overpower the singer

  • Oh, thanks :) I thought something along those lines.

  • Quelle voix magnifique, qu'on retrouve aussi dans le César de Haendel (l'air de Tempesta). Merci pour la vidéo.

  • See my comment with the video, please. There you have all information.

  • who is this soprano??

  • Inger Dam-jensen- its says right in the description...

  • Continue:I agree that Renee's added high coloratura notes were too sharp and not round enough to pleasing the ears but Kiri didn't even dare to ended a bit on higher notes at the end though she started as an mezzo soprano. Baroque or non Barogue music, it has to be performed with brilliancy and intensity and beauty not softness, no matter how sweet, which cannot cut through an orchestra.

  • I like her voice, brillant and beautiful and even in Handel's time there was dramatic voices like that but mostly sang mezzos. Joan Sutherland was a dramatic colortural soprano voice and added a high 'D' at the end which was not written and not in the performing range of most sopranos at Handel's time. I believe that Inger has this intensity and exiting in this performance.

  • I disagree with Hako2004. I think Dam Jensen does the style a bit more justice. The baroque voices were a bit lighter. As to the tempo that's a bit of a topic to discuss. This is a huge competition, and who knows she may have performed it a bit faster due to nerves, or this may have been her choice for this piece. Also, Dam Jensen=more text.

I think we are all discussing which voice we prefer. Personally, I like this one better for this style. I prefer Sutherland for the more dramatic pieces.

  • What a beautiful voice.

I am not a fan of Fleming's voice , and do agree with cabbalistic's comment , her voice is not suited for this aria.

Thank you for posting this beautiful clip! This particular aria has special signifigance and meaning for me, as it was played (Sutherland's version ) at my late Mother's funeral last year.

  • this is fabulous!

  • i love this aria too much

  • Meaning . . . ?

  • there is nothing wrong with that...i used to think that about handel...i love his music to much...nothing wrong with being a little obsessed. lol

  • I think the voice is spectacular. Much better version than Renee Fleming. My only beef with sopranos and Handel is that you most of the time can't understand a word of it... of course.... you can understand most Handel. So, not her fault.

  • Yes I think Renee Fleming's voice is too 'heavy' for this aria.

  • BRAVO TO YOU!! Doesn't matter who is in the audience..YOU SING WHAT YOU SING!!!!

  • Because she is fully occupied at the Royal Danis Opera, with recordings of much different kind (she is t.ex member of an advanced group called "Mad Cow Sing", she sings at church concerts etc. and she seldom travels far, because she lets her family come first.

  • Splendid. Not a spectacular voice, but a very firm technique and top notch delivery, which I am sure Dame Joan recognized. Why haven't we heard more of her?

  • Very nicely done! Beautiful voice, and excellent coloratura. As a matter of personal taste, I still prefer Dame Joan, but I can say very little against this soprano, except that perhaps she could have let her voice ring out a bit more. Brava.

  • GREAT

  • I saw this competition in 1993. Inger was just too good to beat. She has a very lovely voice and secured technique. To win the Cardiff Singers of the World, you hold a very prestigious title. Her competitors were very tough, and she even won against the projected favorite (from fist day) Chilean tenor who represented Sweden. (Man, that guy should have won!) Thaks for posting this video. Those who criticized Inger, go win the title for yourself first, then do the talking!

  • Why isn't Te Kanawa listed on YouTube? Especially in her "Hey-Day" 1980's Royal Wedding. Someone's gotta have the download to that spectacale? lol

  • She actually IS listed. After I saw your question, I went back and double checked the listings. So try typing exactly this; "Kanawa - Handel - Let the Bright Seraphim". Good luck. (it should work!)

  • Edita Gruberova's and Joan Sutherland's renditions are much better than hers.

  • Lovely version of this beautiful piece!

This song has special meaning to me as it was played at my late Mother's funeral in february.

I had only ever liked the one done by Dame Joan Sutherland.

Thank you so much for posting !

  • Manu-CHILE: Demasiado vibrato... horrible!!!! Me molesta mucho...

  • i think that this was a good version. ella tiene buen control de respiracion, de hecho fue excelente (!!), y creo que no tiene el vibrato en demasia.

  • Perfect voice for Mozart & Handel!

    Christian

  • Its different, but i really like it.

  • That middle section should be at least a little slower to show some contrast, although I think both Te Kanawa and Battle sing it faster than Sutherland. Of course, as Hako2004 states, Sutherland's voice is larger (more "trumpet-like") and the finale is more dramatic due to the high D. Still, Dam-Jensen

has an attractive voice and style, and she is definitely courageous singing this piece in front of Sutherland.

  • You are very humble Olfux, one sign of a perpetual student of life...congratulations.

  • Well, there are a few significant differences, to me anyway. Sutherland sings the center section of the aria in a more languid pace, allowing the lovely lines to develop fully. Sutherland voice is larger and more heroic, which add to the

feeling of the piece. The huge, climatic high D in Dame Joan's version was a show-stopper. Dam-Jensen sings very accurately and with firmness, and enunciates well....to her credit.

  • I realize, that I - an amateur - have fallen in the hands of a pro! He who sticks his nose too much forward, must face the consequenses himself. I admit beeing prejudiced in favour of Inger Dam Jensen and is'nt able to hear or notice those differences you point out.

    Thank you for the lesson!

  • I guess it should have been "sticks his nose too way out" - sorry (could'nt find this phrase in any dictionary).

  • Well sung, if somewhat rushed in places. She uses her breath

economically, but doesn't seem to quite conjure the fire and spirit of the piece.

  • Thank you for your comment, although I do not quite agree with you. I think, that if compared to Joan Sutherland - which is easily done with one klick of the mouse - it is hard to hear much difference in favour of Sutherland, and Inger Dam-Jensens charisma is just wonderful and matches the piece well.
