you've just gotta love this song!...i've covered it as part of this Christmas series i'm doing called "12 Days Before Christmas", you should check it out, the videos are on my channel :-)
JUST SO YOU'LL KNOW ... Aretha's Gospel music piano expertise was nurtured by the late Rev. James Cleveland, the "King of Gospel" music himself!! Sho nuff!!
Aretha Franklin appeared as a woman with class and with a unique style for the piano. She sung so magnificently!!! have to give her Thumbs up! Thanks for posting.
"...played the hell out of that piano." ... Uuummmmm Noooooooooo... You could tell by the first few keys of the intro that it wasn't a "Well Seasoned Piano Player". Don't get me wrong... She did her thing... but "played the hell out of it"... Naw... She probably played better when she played for her father's church...
Even the vocals... She was her attention was divided between playing and singing to where she couldn't even put her all into the vocals.
Actually ... the fact is ... "accepted to the Juilliard School's music program to study classical piano" .... nowhere will you find that she actually finished the program or received any degree.
My initial comment was in no way meant to belittle her, rather ... it was to just state that piano is no her stronger point. She plays better than I do ... and I've been playing for a lil bit.
Vh1, i think it was, did a top 25 greatest pianist in the music industry and Aretha made the list. Aretha is a fantastic pianist. She learned classical piano from a friend who went to Juliard School and she learned to play piano growing up in the church, and she can definately play the piano great.
You must be out of your mind or extremely jealous!! Not a seasoned pianist...you must not know her history at all. If you check out the rest of the posts on youtube you will find that Aretha has no problem dividing her attention between and exceptional piano and vocals. She unlike average pianist that just do chords while singing.
I saw her last year and she was soaring hard, much better than in a 1/2 dozen horrid shows from the 80s and early 90s. I'm thrilled with Aretha's recent shows too. For awhile there it was the Vegas Hit Medleys (like what Gladys and Chaka do now)show and then gone--with the band drowning her out the whole time.
I've always thought this is a boring carol though she does a fine job.
Aretha always sounds great, but let's face it she doesn't always look so hot. This is one of her best moments in the looks department! She is fabulous in red!
please she looks alot better than most people. out of the top 5 divas she looks the best. (in the face department) and the top five is tina, gladys, patti, diana and aretha.
Aretha is just more pleasing to the ear without all that damn screaming. She drips soul. Patti can bring you chills, but she has to scream to do it. Aretha can just sit there play the piano sing softly and bring you chills.
Lets face it Aretha's best vocal dayz are long gone. Patti on her worst day would give Aretha more than a run for her money. Never the less Reeree sound is heavenly whenever she brings her A-game. Her gospel drench runs would get her over.
Phenomenonal? Aretha mother was the greatest Painist around "Mrs. Barbara" played the paino and sung. Aretha father was the best singer command audience in the millions. Aretha comes from champion blood. Patti and Chaka can sing but Aretha is supreme to all.Aretha learned from the best Clara Ward, Mahalia, Inez Andrews etc chitlin curcuit.Especially newcomers: Whitney, Sade,Fantasia*kindergarten unwilling to learn from The Queen and her princess Chaka and Patti
People are always comparing Aretha Franklin to Patti Labelle; but at the end of the day they are both outstandingly gifted artists. Patti is at the top of excellence in live performance. She employs a slightly operatic (in terms of range and timbre) tone that suits her. Aretha has much more gospel influence in her music (and she always has). She sings a sultry 1st Alto (with extensions) that has sustained her for decades. GIVE UP ON THE COMPARISON GAME!
Not only did she make an entrance like a star, she looked like the grand star/legend she is. I first heard this by the fabulous Patti LaBelle, but THIS is THE version: Aretha is a genius!
THIS RENDITION OF THIS CHRISTMAS SONG - SOUNDS real real churchy. I think it is the piano that reminds me of sunday morning church - Aretha is still singing the fool out of it ! ! !
