Sensei Mottram has just been awarded his 5th Dan by Sensei Ticky Donovan England Uk, one of the strictest most influential karateka of the 21st century and you say he doesn't know what he's doing, v foolish thing to say
Kata is a series of techniques performed in elegant form, disguising its true meaning. This karateka does very sharp kata, it is rushed, but very good. However, you can see that he does not know what it means, or what the kata stands to accomplish. Kata has become simple aesthetic to most, and for the others, you now have a very powerful weapon.
I agree. And no one is diong the jump crescent kick correctly. Every one I see the kick is underneath them in the air. You can't kick someone like that. You should kick your hand in the jump then rotate 360 degrees. Not even Milon does it right. The applause is not even deserved period.
Giving a non sequitor is proof of not being able to answer truthfully. This isn't real life. There are more important things that you should be concerned with. Not some nit picking about a kata.
Frankvanqueens Yr a idiot m8! you dont give a toss about the 'TRUE' meaning, n yada yada. trying to big your self up by going against the grain. JHON YR CLASS M8, well done at the worlds
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
My children, let me fill your cup, as you drink of my wisdom and learning! This form originated in China, and the Japanese changed it, making it worthless, as the TRUE techniques are lost to those who don't know. The nukite is worthless, only those who know it's true secret can use it, but not as performed in this farce of a "kata"! The Japanese brought back Chinese forms from their brutal occupation of Manchuria, and changed is so as not to give credit to their Chinese victims.
response to microbot23, Shotokan karate IS useful in the streets, it teaches you to defend yourself and removes the immediate threat in single moves. My Sensi has twice used a simple throat lock to defend an attack in the streets!
i remember this from my childhood.. when we got our black belt we finally trained this kata.. awesome i still like it but well i think all things in this shotokan karate is useless for the streets..
Great to watch. I do GKR in Australia but i often watch different styles Kata's. This is one of my favourites and this bloke is good to watch also. The Micheal Milon and Luca Valdez Unsu's show you how good it can get evne though as i said this is very good also
Hello all! My name is Amy and I am grading for my shodan May 9th. I'm very excited. This is my 7th year in karate. I love going online on YouTube and watching the videos of katas. This kata, unsu, is a cool one. I've done it once at karate camp. (our karate club is in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada) Best karate to you all! Have a wonderful day, and always have fun in the dojo!
oh wow... shodan is great. for me it s still some years to go for that ... so i wish you all the best then. yeah, the katas here on youtube are great. and i love especially the ones from kanazawa sensei... just great. so good training for you too. greets from switzerland
Its very sad to see tHese off hAnd comments. if Jon were as baD As you SEem to thinX he Would not have achIeved so much aT sucH a young age. i have known JON personally FOR 9 YEARS and have always found him down to earth and generous. He really is one of the nicest guys i know. As has been stated before if you think you are better. Lets see you.
it doesn't matter what belt you are at all, the actor of 'he-man', i forget his name lol, he won the world championship when he was a green belt, so no where near black belt lol.
this is just a random fact :) keep up the karate everyone!!
hiya i im 15 and i am a 1st dan and he came and did a demo for my karate club he was brill and every time i watch his vid it makes m want to do that kata better than what he does it NO CAT IN HELL CHANCE
no one should ever rush karate training, especally when getting a black belt. people have different paces. in my instance, i started karate training at 11. it took me 7 years to get a shodan rank, and im 19 years old right now. i have a friend who started the same age and time with me, and he got hhis shodan rank at 16 years old. but when it comes down to it, just take your time. hope everyone will contimue their training. OSU! good kata, by the way.
Bravo! I dont know what else to say, I was very impressed. Everyone works on kata differently, so stop trying to prop yourself up by bringing down a fantastic competitor, sheesh...
My anger continues - I just saw Milon's again, and although he would almost certainly beat John on sheer stregth and power, he is technically no where near the quality of Johnathans. As for Luca Valdesi's Unsu, if John went up against him with his Unsu; I'm afraid it would be five flags to England. Forget the insults John, keep up the good work, everyone at Ishinryu loves you, you are an asset and a talisman to the future of British martial arts.
Also, about Sensei Johnathan's jump, even Milon's isnt perfect if you watch it. Along with this, and believe me when I say this because I have seen both so the jump in action, NO ONE gets more height than John in the WORLD. That my friends, is a fact.
This subject has made me so angry. Id just like to say that John is a 4th Dan, so unless you are 5th Dan or above, your critisms can go discarded. He was 4th in the world last year, which is the highest EVER achievment by a English athlete in Kata. Do get a good example of how good john really is you need to see it in the flesh, also look around on youtube, if you find an Unsu (apart from Milon') that is better than Johnathns then I will eat my hat
Well said. Unsu is not a 5th Dan kata for no reason, it is incredibly difficult. John has been an inspiration to me, and I have known him for a number of years and he has taught me. His speed and power are exceptional and just trust me when i SAY THAT YOUTUBE DOES NO JUSTICE to show this. Johnathan is a great guy, dsnt care about the money and teaches because he loves doing it.
Great energy and speed. Techniques are a bit sloppy though, e.g. snap back in front kicks, kiba dachi near the end, also jumps way too much to the side, good height though. Performance shows real promise, keep at it :-D
Twchniques are a bit sloppy? YOu prick. This is one of the most highly decorated British martial artists ever and he is still only 26. He is number 4 in the world, 3rd in Europe and has been the English champion for the last 10years. Nothing in the kata is sloppy, it is near perfection. The only Unsu I have seen better is Michael Milon. Youre right about the jump though, it wasnt spot on, that was about it.
Well, there you go... I don't particularly care that the guy is one of the most highly decorated martial artist ever in Britain. I am not blinded by the glitter of his medals. He's good. He's far from perfect. So are a lot of people. I am just saying it like it is. Milon was better. Fine. Doesn't mean I go calling people "prick" cause they think he could improve (were he still alive that is). PS maybe "sloppy" was a too strong word, I am not a native English speaker.
ticky donovan is LEGEND! i would love to have the oppertunity to train with him. I've been doing this for 11 years, now a 3rd dan and i still can't get this kata that good! must keep trying!

His fours punches were all over the place, he had no hip movement stepping into the nikosashi dachi's and barely any hip any where else.
It's not near perfection as I can't pick out a million points where he should improve.
But then again it's WKF(?) competition so i'll leave him to his flowery Karate.
