@davis771 I was here a month ago (loved your video) and read your connection to Katrina. Now, every time I hear it, I can see, in "my" minds eye, each line described in the song. I see 2 dear friends sitting in the aftermath of Katrina, wondering if they will have the ordinary but special moments back... "How the birds sang in the wind.... how the dog barked in the yard.....I guess that's nothing much, but everything to us.. and that's what seems so hard". I tear up every time I hear it.
This woman has been my favorite woman in music for the past 4 years now. But I hate to admit it but not only do i feel quite stupid but I feel shame for never hearing nor seeing this wonderful song and vid you made for us all. I bow to you and thank you for it..
@SaveCetaceansNOW .. thank you so much. Would love to share more Patty Griffin rarities with you, you may not have/know! If you'd like to have song files emailed to you, give me your email address & I'd be happy to share. Patty Griffin is my favorite, favorite, favorite.
@davis771 Patty is coming to the Jazz Festival in Ottawa with Robert Plant's Band of Joy - I am head over heels for Patty - June 23 will be my first chance to see her live - thanks so much for posting this - my epiphany was when I first heard Rain - what is your e-mail addy? I would appreciate being a recipient of your generous offer. Thanks again.
YES! Patty is the real deal. No flashy, staged, choreographed, smoke and mirrors with her shows. Just a real woman with real talent singing real songs....with unmatched greatness.
this actually is my sisters quartet song! My mom never knew that it was about hurricane Katrina! My sister and the 3 of her friends, me, my friends, my dance directer, and lots of other people were crying because the 3 of her friends are going off to collage and she isn't! That's what my mom thought it was about! Losing a friend! SAD HUHH?
This song was not written ABOUT Katrina...it was written before the tragedy happened. To me, however, the lyrics just lent themselves, and eerily so, to the event. Thus, my vision for this song, and from that vision, the subsequent making, of this video.
But that's the beauty of great music and a great song- it means whatever it means to the listener. And that is as it should be.
@davis771 I am a new fan to Patty's music. She is a true talent. She has this amazing gift to draw you right into the song with her. I wanted to tell you what incredible insight you had to put this beautiful song with the tragic events of Katrina. The lryics could not be more perfect. And the pictures in the video were just as perfect. And I agree with your last statement. The meanings we get out of a song are unique to each of us. Thats the way it has been and always will be.
Excellent video and, from one Patty fan to another, an exceptionally beautiful song. Your friend Shirley did a remarkable job. I agree that the song works well with the theme of the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. The song originally appeared on the compilation album "13 Ways to Live" which was released in 2004. All of the songs on the album are by Austin artists and were composed by those artists as an avenue to express their feelings, thoughts and ideas about the war in Iraq.
*song, not sing

Two girls in my dance class did this sing as a duet but had a different meaning, it was so beautiful! Now I'm addicted to this song!
