this still brings tears to my eyes cause NBA on NBC was the reason why i loved basketball no matter what i'll always love NBA on NBC those years defined my childhood
I have to admit this montage brought a tear to my eye. I fell in love with basketball through NBC, the moment when M.J. made that incredible switch in mid-air against the L.A. I remember as a kid after the NFL season was over rushing to the car from church, to get home and watch the double and triple headers on NBC. I used to love hearing the narrators voice during the arena birds eye view. It's silly sometimes when i play hoops i hear the intro and voice in my head. NBA where have you gone?
Remember durign the playoffs, NBC would have 3 games a day? And they used to show all the conference finals games as well. NBC was much, much better than ABC today as far as NBA coverage.
you are right....this is the best video on youtube. I had my vcr ready for the final NBA on NBC broadcast and I knew there would be a great montage at the end. I have watched this so much that I have worn out that video tape lol. I knew it had to be on youtube lol. When I first recorded this I was left with tears in my eyes from all the great memories NBA on NBC provided us. To this day I still get a little choked up when the ball bounces at the end. THANKS for posting!!!
Nj, good call...nba lockout seemingly lifted..however the owners do need to vote...we'll see what happens on Monday...in the time being it never gets old seeing this nbc montage...no one will ever do better than what nbc did covering the nba...
I do miss the NBA on NBC. THey had great production value, great theme, and good game commentators like Marv Albert. NBC seemed to be more focused on the game itself. They were also fortunate they had the 90s Jordan era and the fact the Knicks were good also helped their NY affliate. It just seems ESPN is all about their people and making it way too cartoony. How many in games interviews do you need. I can see the coaches don't want to be bothered during the game let them coach...LOL
NBC did amazing job putting together farewell tribute to great moments with NBA in 90s. Today's NBA has become so soft makes you wonder is NBA best days gone????
Sad thing is, when i heard they were leaving NBC, i did not give two shits. Then watching the bland coverage of lakers vs pistons in 2004 finals, i was SHIT, our era of my childhood is over. I remember going to beach every year with my mom and watching MJ in the finals killing some team. THIS WILL NEVER COME BACK. ITS F ING SAD
@bpm1313 If that series goes 7 I think Phoenix wins. Those Bulls were on the ropes at that point. Phoenix was starting to play great defense, Charles was playing like a man possessed, Kevin Johnson was asserting himself and they would have been at home in game 7. Phoenix really was the better team for the last four games of that series. Paxson really saved Chicago's bacon that year.
@VancouverChokers a lost is a lost..there no such things as "what if victories" betta team last 4 games.. @VancouverChokers : true Phoenix prob would have a good shot if it went to 7 games. Now looking back Phoenix was at it's peak with the Barkley-KJ-Marjele era. Since the '93 finals they lost to Houston in '94 in 7 games and again in '95 to Olajuwon again Barkley was slowing down, Marjele wasn't the same, they got exposed with no true center to deal with Hakeem, and that was the end of that trio. I was always fascinated with that Phx team, I always wondered what if...

Aww man. I only wish the NBA on NBC covered the 2011 championship finals. The way Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry, J.J Barea, and the Cast&Crew of the Dallas Mavericks won the gold was classic. They won like a team with the heart of champions.
this is a sick video. I remember just about everything from 1995 and up. I remember waking up on Sunday morning and looking forward to watching 3 key games that day. Beginning of playoffs meant 5-6 games you could watch on basic tv. Conference final games could also be seen on nbc. You know what's so funny about this clip? Got to 2:37. Notice how the crowd and the Rockets realized they were screwed when for some unknown reason John Stockton was wide open for three. The shit gits funnier when even Bill Walton (co announcer) says Uh-Oh because he seen the same shit about to happen at the same time. I know I am not the only one who finds this funny as hell. Damn near more funny than when Big Baby Davis started crying when Keven Garnett punked his ass....
And NBA leaving NBC not only hurt the NBA, it killed NBC. NBC use to have popular shows like seinfeild, friends, fresh prince, mad about you, losing the NBA made the station lose regular programming. Unlike the NFL which is only once every week, the NBA brought constant promos for their shows through out the year. I would not of known what Mad about you was unless i kept seeing their adds during bulls playoff games. WHY PAY FOR THE NFL AND OLYMPICS when it is not regular programming? logic?
Dick Ebersol quit today. The idiot that let the NBA leave NBC. The station went from having the NBA, and the most popular tv shows like fresh prince, seinfield, friends, into being the lowest rated network, no NBA, and a pre game football show with a billion people on it. He is a dope.
@TRJ22487 NBC is retarded. When they did not up their offer to retain the NBA their whole network died. The NBA brought a lot of programming and got attention to their shows. Now no one even watches NBC. Its last among the 4 big networks. The NBA is still making money despite ESPN on ABC's bad coverage.
@redskins2k NBC lost money on every single NBA broadcast for the 2001 and 2002 seasons. That's right, broadcasting each game for those last two seasons was actually losing them money. NBC was being driven into the ground before they gave up the NBA contract, which they had to do.
@TRJ22487 No NBC is stupid, they lost money on the broadcast because the east was a bunch of crap those 2 years, everyone who watches sports knows everything changes. Their programming stinks now, they are playing hockey , norte dame football spring games, and awful tv shows
@redskins2k...I don't think you understand how television contracts work. The networks don't make more or less money based directly on how teams are performing, what players are in the league, or anything like that. They already knew they were going to be losing money on their broadcasts those seasons a couple of years prior, around the lockout. It's the reason David Stern reformatted everything, and it's actually benefited them, so they're obviously going to keep it the way it is.
@TRJ22487 of course they do. The more relevent the east coast is, the better the ratings, and the more interest there is in the league. There is a reason they started losing a of money. From 91 -98 they had Chicago 6times ,NY once and Orlando once with Shaq. In 99 they had NY again. Then everything fell off. The east was awful, teams like indiana , new jersey and philly, bucks, raptors were the best teams. The NBA makes money when the east has its big markets good
As an addition to my comment, ESPN's CFB coverage is good, but they can surely improve on a lot of other things. Also, has their NBA coverage even gotten worse this year. The analysts on SportsCenter seem okay, but the music on the show is actually worse (and its the same music, it was just like off in terms of the beat or something). Perhaps it is because I have not watched the NBA in a long time. I finally watched some today.
ive watched basketball on tv for over 20 years, and the nba on nbc was the best produced ,most well broadcasted production of any sport on any station ever.
ESPNs coverage of the NBA is a joke. Seriously the NBA finals are taken like a joke. The commentators are just idiots. Well not all of them but Jeff Van Gundy is one I point at.
I miss you NBA on NBC. The game broadcasts were always first class.
Hey ESPN, you brought back Hannah Storm (a former broadcaster from NBA on NBC), but ESPN's broadcast still can't touch NBA on NBC.
Now hire Bob Costas (the lead broadcaster in this video) to replace Mike Breen. Costas did a great job replacing Marv Albert from 1998-2001 on NBA on NBC during his "biting" absence...
David Stern, ESPN is one of the main reasons the league is losing money.
Back when the NBA was on NBC I used to look forward to the Sunday tripleheaders almost as much as I did NFL Sundays. The games felt like big deals; the production was among the best of any network's coverage of any sport. And when they took over weeknight coverage during the conference finals and NBA finals they all felt like big-time events no matter who was playing. Just my opinion but I truly believe that the NBA would not have suffered as much of a loss in popularity had it stayed on NBC.

@BT47 the nba died after the nba on nbc left. ej charles and kenny suck at commentating. i dont know why ppl say they are good. charles is a douche, he critisizes players, especially kobe.
I was born in 1991 in Chicago IL so you know waht fan I was. There was something different about the NBA in the 90's-early 00's that made me as a fan love this game more than any. NBC gave us all the greatest moments and players you will ever see on TV week in and week out. The passion isn't there now and the players don't seem to care as much. The NBA back then was my favorite sport but I love the NFL more because of how it's changed. I love the NBA still but it's just not the same. FUCK ESPN!
96:The Chicago Bulls have won the '95-'96 NBA Championship! 97: Stockton! Open! 3! YES! John Stockton sends the Utah Jazz to the NBA Finals! 98: Jordan! Open! CHICAGO WITH THE LEAD! 99: Sprewell! He's underneath! Tries to free himself! And he can't! The San Antonio Spurs have won their first NBA championship
90: And we welcome year to the premiere telecast of the NBA on NBC 91: What a spectacular move by Michael Jordan! 92: The Chicago Bulls have won the NBA championship for the second straigh season! 93: Here's Paxson for 3! YES! 94: The New York Knicks headed to the NBA Finals to face the Houston Rockets! 95: Miller for 3! And he got it! Reggie Miller with a clutch trey and it's 105-102. And a steal! Miller retreats to the 3 point line and hits again!
That was my childhood. Old school Shaq, Jordan/Bulls dynasty, Miller, Ewing (when the Knicks were the Knicks with the LINEUP!), Hakeem, David Robinson/90s Duncan, Mourning, LJ, Drexler, Barkley/Kevin Johnson.
That was when basketball was BASKETBALL! A TEAM sport. Not the circus nonsense of Lebron, lineups had a style (Chicago Bulls intro theme) and not the bullshit dancing/powder act that Lebron comes out to. Remember when scoring 40-50 pts was special? Now its whatever. NBA sucks!!!!
That's my childhood, just turning on channel 4 to see the Lakers in the playoffs, or Jordan do some spectacular stuff. Man, I wish it could have stayed longer...
back then, there was real rivarys. Now you got beotch made plays like Lebron James who just want to play with superstars and dance, while winning rings. YOU WOULD NEVER SEE A REGGIE MILLER JOIN MJ Back then. When the KOBE'S AND DUNCAN'S RETIRE. ITS GOING TO BE HARD FOR ME TO WATCH THIS CRAP. LIKE MJ SAID. Kobe and Duncan are the last of the mochicans ( along with shaq)
I was too young for Magic and Bird, so for me... this was without a doubt the greatest era in basketball. Nothing like waking up early on the weekends to watch a triple header, starting off in MSG and ending in LA. Thanks for the upload and the memories
Watched this some time ago, forgotten it, accidentally watched this again, it still brought me tears and goosebumps, not just because the NBA on NBC isn't coming back soon, but because the league, with so much more work ethic, intensity, passion and pride, may never be back again, I have to say that I was lucky to have witnessed the 90s NBA.
152 likes and 0 dislikes in other clips you'll see atleast one dislike(with over 100 vote). It really shows alot how ppl really agree that nba should've stayed on nbc.
Maybe it's just me, but NBA fans seemed much more alive back then. There's a chill going down the my spine when Stockton hit that three on Barkley or Sean Elliot nailing the three from the corner. Amazing. Then when the announcer yells, "TO SHAQ!!" and a thunderous cheer followed. Truly amazing times.
@generalnsj hahahahaha. I remember seeing it live. My friend was a NYN fan... i didn't have the heart to tell him that was bullshit, but damn well knew it was.
after seeing this makes me sad how nbc is no longer covering the nba, but im also so pissed that the nba is with abc, its all for the money, goddamn i hate abc's coverage period it lacks the quality of nbc, the only thing I can say is that ATLEAST marv albert is still commentating. Now i have to wait another 6 fucking years until abc's contract expires and we can hope nbc gets it back.
Oh the memories. ABC/ESPN should be fired for there lack of games on ABC. NBA on NBC had a game of at least a doubleheader and sometimes triple headers on Sundays. NBC had almost full coverage of the NBA Playoffs. NBA on ABC barely. It would take like the entire contract to equal the amount of games NBC had in one season.
@retrosam84 Correct small market teams got exposure on NBC. ABC has like nothing every week. I remember ABC use to show a lot of ACC mens basketball, full coverage of NASCAR Chase to the Sprint Cup, Golf every now and then. Now ABC shows only the SEC semi and SEC Finals, One sprint cup race, and no golf. ESPN why have ABC when you are hardly going to use it.
@Darkdragonic Agreed, I never got to see the NBC era. However, I have watched the old clips. I am talking about random regular season pre-games on youtube, and I am stunned at the level of quality. I just wish that NBC buys back the NBA.
dick ebersol is a fool for not making sure the nba stayed on nbc. NBC is dead last in the ratings now. They are playing the freaking winter olympic qualifiers and water polo on the weekends. What kind of stupid network does that?
Just my two cents on Van Gundy and Jackson. I think the duo are okay, but they pale in comparison to people like Fratello. Especially Jackson who comes off as very stale for some reason. I can handle Van Gundy, he makes terrible jokes, but occasionally he comes up with good ones. Mike Breen is a great PBP man for ESPN/ABC, honestly when he and Hubie Brown called games it wasn't great but okay. However with Gundy and Jackson now I can't watch the NBA, even if Breen is calling the game.
I totally agree. You know once Walton got onto ESPN and ABC (Sister networks) he became very bad at being an analyst to the point that I almost hated him. But recently I was watching some old games and then remembered how much I used to love listening to him. Well I guess that shows you how bad ABC is, they can take anybody and make them look bad. (Well almost anyone, somehow Mike Breen has avoided this.)
No question bluework this and another Kobe Video Greatness Personified are two of the most amazingly edited videos ever. But this is awesome because it shows the NBA at its peak. Someone send this to ABC and ESPN. Maybe they will like it enough to give us the curticay of giving the NBA back to NBC.
It wouldn't make a difference becuz we've already lost all of the old greats such as michael jordan, patrick ewing, pippen, hakeem da dream, all of those players plus the great commentators such as marv albert and mike fratello with out them the NBC Coverage would b just like ESPN's horrible coverage 2day
They could get Albert and Fratello back. And they could build up Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, T-Mac, Kevin Durant, Brandon Roy, and other amazing players the way they built Jordan, Ewing, Pippen, Hakeem, and Barkley.
@RSB, yes Marv and Fratello are great on TNT, but TNT doesn't always air the biggest games, ESPN and ABC usually get the biggest games, in the Playoffs its a split but ABC get the Finals, I don't want Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson doing the finals, I want Marv and Fratello doing them.
Oh yes of course. But I want them on National TV. It just doesn't feel the same watching TNT. Especially once the Conference Finals start, because I love listening to those guys, and then BAM, its over and I am stuck with Van Gundy and Fratello.
TNT is the best right now. There is a reason that NBA TV has enlisted the help of Turner.
redskins2k is right, there are many things that gone down the tube, music, tv shows, even our NBA coverage sucks, NBC back in the 90's and early 2000's really captured the intensity of the game, for example, before a game that you know is going to be a very close one, NBC really captured your attention with the little intro in the beginning of the game, now they cant do it at all, NBA games now are sometimes boring mostly cause of the coverage and the stupid ass commentators like van gundy.
Abc don't have a lot of great moments, the only ones that I remember are Derek Fisher 0.4 buzzer beater against SA, Robert Horry three pointer in Detroit and Kobe buzzer beater against PHX .
@nintendofan79 I agree... like they just got skipped over. Even though they beat my all-time favorite team (95 Magic), the Rockets totally got screwed when I look back. Everyone just kind of forgets they won back to back.
nba on nbc is the greatest tv coverage of the nba the second is the nba on cbs the third in the nba on tbs and the last and the least the nba on abc/espn
Its sad that the nba did not have the spurs vs rockets on abc. thats how you advertise the league with big games coming into the playoffs. They are covering college rather their own sport they cover.
So the #2 and #3 teams in the Western Conference (Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs) played at 2:30 yesterday, with first in the division on the line, and ABC didn't televise the game?
Memo to the Morons at ESPN and ABC: NBC would have had this game back in the day. Your coverage of the NBA is beyond horrible.
humm i wonder what else they missed in 2002?

Perhaps it is because I have not watched the NBA in a long time. I finally watched some today.

FUCK ESPN!

Darkdragonic 1 year ago 5
@Darkdragonic Also, unlike ABC, the NBA on NBC at least had regional coverage so other teams can get exposure as well!
retrosam84 1 year ago
@retrosam84 Correct small market teams got exposure on NBC. ABC has like nothing every week. I remember ABC use to show a lot of ACC mens basketball, full coverage of NASCAR Chase to the Sprint Cup, Golf every now and then. Now ABC shows only the SEC semi and SEC Finals, One sprint cup race, and no golf. ESPN why have ABC when you are hardly going to use it.
Darkdragonic 1 year ago 2
@Darkdragonic Agreed, I never got to see the NBC era. However, I have watched the old clips. I am talking about random regular season pre-games on youtube, and I am stunned at the level of quality. I just wish that NBC buys back the NBA.

TonyMaster007 2 years ago
Van Gundy and Jackson are more like a poor man's version of Bill Walton and Steve "Snapper" Jones on NBC in the nineties.
joekiddlouischama 2 years ago 4
Joe Kidd
I totally agree. You know once Walton got onto ESPN and ABC (Sister networks) he became very bad at being an analyst to the point that I almost hated him. But recently I was watching some old games and then remembered how much I used to love listening to him. Well I guess that shows you how bad ABC is, they can take anybody and make them look bad. (Well almost anyone, somehow Mike Breen has avoided this.)

It wouldn't make a difference becuz we've already lost all of the old greats such as michael jordan, patrick ewing, pippen, hakeem da dream, all of those players plus the great commentators such as marv albert and mike fratello with out them the NBC Coverage would b just like ESPN's horrible coverage 2day
daGOATmj23 2 years ago
They could get Albert and Fratello back. And they could build up Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, T-Mac, Kevin Durant, Brandon Roy, and other amazing players the way they built Jordan, Ewing, Pippen, Hakeem, and Barkley.

I Hope they can
daGOATmj23 2 years ago
@TonyMaster007
marv albert and fratello do tnt and nbc and tnt would have the same analyst on there shows
RSB0171717 2 years ago
@RSB, yes Marv and Fratello are great on TNT, but TNT doesn't always air the biggest games, ESPN and ABC usually get the biggest games, in the Playoffs its a split but ABC get the Finals, I don't want Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson doing the finals, I want Marv and Fratello doing them.
TonyMaster007 2 years ago 2
@TonyMaster007
i agree van gundy and jackson suck and shouldnt do the finals
what i meant was back when the nba was on nbc fratello and albert did both nbc and tnt games
RSB0171717 2 years ago 2
Oh yes of course. But I want them on National TV. It just doesn't feel the same watching TNT. Especially once the Conference Finals start, because I love listening to those guys, and then BAM, its over and I am stuck with Van Gundy and Fratello.
TNT is the best right now. There is a reason that NBA TV has enlisted the help of Turner.

redskins2k is right, there are many things that gone down the tube, music, tv shows, even our NBA coverage sucks, NBC back in the 90's and early 2000's really captured the intensity of the game, for example, before a game that you know is going to be a very close one, NBC really captured your attention with the little intro in the beginning of the game, now they cant do it at all, NBA games now are sometimes boring mostly cause of the coverage and the stupid ass commentators like van gundy.
emkb24 2 years ago 11
I have realized we are just in the TMZ age now.
Just listen to this music of the 90s. We don't have good music anymore. We don't have good teliviion coverage.
