I live in a city with a little over 1 million people and there are 2 doctors that will provide an abortion in my city. One of the providers says he does 60-70 D&C abortions a week. So a provider performing 60k a year is reasonable.

I think a distinction must be made between something that has the potential to be a human and an actual human. When a fetus becomes a human is debatable and cannot be solved using logic. The fetus is what it is and we cannot let definitions distract us. Many of the "products of conception" which are aborted late-term are viable and I think most would agree this is killing a human. Just FYI: The vast majority of late term abortion cases have to do with a late diagnosis of truly horrific deformities or illness in the fetus. This includes fetal death (and yet they still call it an "abortion" with an already dead fetus), fetuses with huge missing pieces of brain, often babies destined to be born and live only hours or days in terrible pain and anguish.
I don't consider these procedures "abortions", so much as "mercy killings". Controversial, but often understandable.

Let's say a human falls unconscious, or goes into a coma.Certainly our society has a debate about continuing support for persons not expected to recover from a coma,but what if the prognosis said that they would have a 100% chance of recovery within 9 months if support were maintained (or even 85%, certainly pregnancy isn't a 100% chance of success)? Would it be ethical to say the person just because they are for the time being not "sentient" or otherwise capable of caring for themselves?

Why should a 'right to choose to kill' at any stage of human development be given? Because I read all the stories of women thanking him. Several women have said that he saved their lives, that because of him they are alive today, that he treated them with the utmost respect. The fact women flew from all over the country to see him.
He became an abortionist because he heard of a woman dying in an illegal abortion and didn't want that to ever happen.

No, its heroic. Dr. Tiller provided a needed service to women who had to choose between their life vs their unborn fetus life, or had to decide between continuing to carry a "living:" fetus with no head or other deformity that meant it would die immediately upon birth.

Considering he did it for 36 years, and the video didn't reference "in a given year", so that's about half a fetus a day (showing that some days he had some, and some he didn't), incredibly far off from " one abortion per 22 minutes, 31 seconds"... And with the 60,000 figure, it was less than a quarter a day.

um...no...decoding it means showing which genes make which protiens, and which genes activate other genes. Every animal and plant and bacteria shares an ancestor with every other. We have more than enough evidence to show that without dna. But yes....comparing homologous dna has shown exactly how close of an ancestor weve had with other primates. Thats why I can factually say that we share over 99% of our dna with great apes. And we share less and less dna with animals that are less like us.

I think a distinction must be made between something that has the potential to be a human and an actual human. When a fetus becomes a human is debatable and cannot be solved using logic. The fetus is what it is and we cannot let definitions distract us. Many of the "products of conception" which are aborted late-term are viable and I think most would agree this is killing a human. I find it interesting the baby must be killed BEFORE it is delivered (by law). Seriously? It makes a difference?

a person has the right to decide what they will about their own body, and yes in this case to kill their own child. what right do YOU have to say to someone that they can't do it to themselves? If you truly believe in a higher power, as I do, then you can try do dissuade them from that choice but ultimately you can't stop them. ultimately whatever consequences are going to come of their choice are on them, not you. I wouldn't get an abortion, but I'm not stopping anyone else from getting one.

No, actually Dr. Tiller specialized in late-term abortion, being only one of a handful of doctors nationwide willing to perform such procedures.
He had his hands full, since there were very few doctors willing to perform the procedure for the relative abundance of women who suffered late fetal death or late diagnosis of terrible illnesses, so I tend to doubt he did very many early-pregnancy abortions, since those are relatively easy to find.

I don't know guys, I think the mother should have the final word right up until birth. My reasoning is that the fetus is still technically a parasite until then, it would be like a doctor refusing to cut out a potentially dangerous growth, like, the mother could still argue that she fears birth may endanger her life.

Just FYI: The vast majority of late term abortion cases have to do with a late diagnosis of truly horrific deformities or illness in the fetus. This includes fetal death (and yet they still call it an "abortion" with an already dead fetus), fetuses with huge missing pieces of brain, often babies destined to be born and live only hours or days in terrible pain and anguish.
I don't consider these procedures "abortions", so much as "mercy killings". Controversial, but often understandable.

I think if geerup doesnt want an abortion, he shouldnt get one.
If my partner was facing a possible fatal birth problem or at least complications that will seriously damage her, and she wants an abortion but cant get one. Then whatever the medical complications she theorectically suffered i would visit on geerup or those like him...

If you ask me, abortion is bad, and so is depriving the pregnant mother of her will in the matter. Ambiguous situations like these are almost always settled with compromise.
Abortion is an ancient practice, and anyone who explores its history will immediately recognize that a woman committed to having an abortion WILL find a way. The least we could do is provide a safe, sterile environment for the procedure.

All that said, I do not believe the will of the mother to be absolute, the final say, all the way up until birth. For myself, suffering is the most important consideration. Leaving out some peripheral details, research converges on 20-25 weeks into pregnancy, when the brain of the child has developed far enough to register pain stimuli. I'll play it safe and say it's 20 weeks. That's roughly five months.

If a mother considering abortion hasn't made a decision five months into the pregnancy, and if the mother isn't in mortal danger, society ought to make that decision for her (because it's not JUST about the mother anymore; it's also about the being inside her who has at least some capacity to suffer in some important sense): at that point, she ought to go through with it.

Is it then okie dokie to kill it so long as it feels no pain?What about lepers who have no sense of feel,or paralyzed who have no sense of feel.Any of those characteristics you use to label that unborn child unworthy of protection put you down a very dangerous path. If you really want to go down that road, ok--thinking, feeling, aware; what about a person in a coma.Because you can't feel pain makes you less of a person then me? Thus making you expendable?

If you read accounts of women who went to Dr.Tiller, you will see that he was an extremely busy guy. The reason they could not get in any sooner than 24-25 weeks is that Dr.Tiller was booked up, he had hired another guy to assist but even then,women were put off weeks even months.The nurses did most all the work.Ultrasounds,saline injections,fetal monitoring and even delivered the dead babies.Tiller only delivered the afterbirth and cleaned up the mess.

Let's say a human falls unconscious, or goes into a coma.Certainly our society has a debate about continuing support for persons not expected to recover from a coma,but what if the prognosis said that they would have a 100% chance of recovery within 9 months if support were maintained (or even 85%, certainly pregnancy isn't a 100% chance of success)? Would it be ethical to say the person just because they are for the time being not "sentient" or otherwise capable of caring for themselves?

I had the pleasure of Tim Staples (convert from Protestant to Catholic) give a talk here in Texas. He stated that there was a study done on embryos at 31 days and scientist found that the? embryo can feel pain based on the electrical pulses that are present. These electrical pulses were identical to human outside of the womb who felt pain. I thought that was interesting

do believe women have more sense than to risk their own injury or even death like this. There will always be those who disobey the law of the land, but this is no excuse for making a bad practice legal. To bring this to its logical conclusion, should we make child molesting, drunk driving and drug taking legal too, just because a small minority persist in doing it? The 'butchers' are still around, buddy, only nowadays they're in the HIGH streets (PP).

When the UK's 1967 Abortion Act was passed, its instigator (David Steel) said that it 'would not open the floodgates to abortion'. What a load of crap that turned out to be! Others argued that making contraception freely available would 'reduce the number of abortions' - another load of bull. Let no-one be deluded about this, there are more abortions now than ever before, thanks to our know-all politicians for making 'contraception' and abortion so freely available.
